ILA Leadership Opportunities
ILA Board Member Thoughts on Leadership/TrainingJUSTIFICATIONS
• Many library employees in Idaho have little formal library training, especially in public libraries
• Learning on the job is good, but leaders need to emphasize formal training opportunities for staff
• Make clear the difference between ILA/ICfL• Fostering leadership training is vital to Idaho libraries as it
encourages the development of upcoming library leaders. Such sessions often serve as an opportunity to improve the skill set and confidence levels of participants. By supporting leadership training among new- to mid-career librarians in Idaho, we encourage visionary, positive thinking that will lead us into the future of librarianship.
ILA Board Member Thoughts on LeadershipCHARACTERISTICS
• Don’t hold tightly to the past• Encourage staff to navigate change but providing encouragement
and opportunities for training• Let employees make suggestions for new ways to do things• Has a vision of what could be, can articulate that vision, and
motivate others to reach it• Has a high level of emotional intelligence• Can use different communication styles in different settings
ILA Board Member Thoughts on LeadershipCHALLENGES
• Variety• Types of libraries• Funding Sources• Types of patrons served
• Limited formal schooling• ALA programs• School librarian certification
• Factions (Or Lack Thereof)• Institutional• Professional/“Paraprofessional” Divide• Teams of One
ILA Board Member Thoughts on LeadershipOPPORTUNITIES
• Conferences• Multi-day workshops• Online
• Cohorts• Courses• Discussion forums
• Networking/Discussion
ILA Board Member Thoughts on LeadershipNEEDS
• While some are born as natural leaders, others need training to realize this ideal
• Frontline staff need more training, perhaps “guerilla leadership” (work well and influence others, present ideas to the boss, setting a good example), dealing with change
• ILA, especially: taking ideas and moving to action, sustainability• Delegation/Prioritization • Fundraising• ILA needs more leaders that know how to interact with their local
and state officials. It is often the board members or leg committee that do this, but all ILA members, no matter the level or division, should be able to interact with officials on behalf of libraries and library issues.
• Training for leaders that helps them see connections among all library types and locations in the state
