Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2012

Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. — Psalm 85:12

GOD CHOSE US Who chose first, God or you? That is the question explored in today’s three readings. The second reading, from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, reads almost like a hymn. It praises God for choosing us, for calling us to serve, and for blessing us in our service. Paul makes it clear how honored we are and how special is the call to live as children of God. This is through no doing of our own. The first reading and the Gospel use prose rather than poetry to describe the same truth: God did the choosing, not us. When the prophet Amos was berated for being a prophet, he retorted that the whole thing wasn’t his idea in the first place. Neither did the twelve apostles in today’s Gospel ask for their calling. Jesus sent them forth, two by two, to do the work of his kingdom. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Is 1:10-17; Mt 10:34 — 11:1 Tuesday: Is 7:1-9; Mt 11:20-24 Wednesday: Is 10:5-7, 13b-16; Mt 11:25-27 Thursday: Is 26:7-9, 12, 16-19; Mt 11:28-30 Friday: Is 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8; Mt 12:1-8 Saturday: Mi 2:1-5; Mt 12:14-21 Sunday: Jer 23:1-6; Ps 23; Eph 2:13-18; Mk 6:30-34

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Does the scene of the disciples being sent out two by two bring to mind any other scripture? After the flood, Noah opens the door of the ark and sends his passengers out to renew the face of the earth. Certainly, Jesus has the same purpose. The purpose is fulfilled in your communion in the Body of Christ today, and in your being sent from the Eucharist into the world. The sending is so important that our word “Mass” derives from it. In Latin, the last words of worship are Ite, missa est, which means “Go, you are sent.” From that, people began to call Catholic worship the missa, or in English, the “Mass.” Our English words dismissal, missal, emissary, and mission are all related. We are not sent into the workaday world alone, but in relationship to one another. Some people have acquired the unhappy habit of leaving worship as soon as they receive Communion and therefore miss the prayer, the dismissal, and the solemn blessing that are essential parts of the Mass. The dismissal is a seal on our Communion and reveals its purpose. Thanks be to God! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. PRAYER OF THE WEEK July 15, 2012, Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time O God, who show the light of your truth to those who go astray, so that they may return to the right path, give all who for the faith they profess are accounted Christians the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all that does it honor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: How do I live up to being called Christian? Are there ways that I can do better? Collect text from the English translation of The Roman Missal, © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

—San Buenaventura
