What is ICAP?Individual Career Academic Planning (ICAP)
qProcess that helps students engage in academic
and career development activities.
qProduct (tangible plan) that is created and
maintained for students’ academic, career, post-
secondary, workforce, and personal advancement.
ü ICAP is a multi-step process, not a checklist!

2. Grab a sheet of paper & hold it in front of you
3. Choose your position: reader or task performer
ü Task performer = close eyes & listen to directions
ü Reader = give directions
4. No peeking or questions!

q Fold your sheet of paper in half
q Now, tear off the upper right-hand corner
q Fold the paper in half again and tear off the upper left-hand corner
q Fold in half again in half
q Now tear off the lower right-hand corner

q Now open your eyes and unfold your paper. If your partner did a good job of communicating and you did a good job of listening, all of our sheets should look exactly the same!

q As a counselor, being an effective communicator is recognizing that your administrators, teachers, and students receive information in different ways in order to be successful.
q As a counselor, being an effective communicator is recognizing that you are alone in providing WBL activities to your students. It takes partnerships with your local community to make this happen!
