    Modules covered in Mainframe:

Z/OS: z/OS is a 64-bit operating system for mainframecomputers, produced by IBM

JCL: Job Control Language is a scripting language usedon IBM mainframe operating systems to instruct thesystem on how to run a batch job or start a subsystem.JCL uses a number of IBM utility programs to assist in

the processing of data. Utilities are most useful inbatch processing.

VSAM:Virtual storage access method (VSAM)an IBM disk file storage access method

TSO: Time Sharing Option (TSO) is an interactive time-

sharing environment for IBM mainframe operating systems ISPF: Interactive System Productivity Facility(ISPF) is

a software product for the z/OS operating system that runson IBM mainframes.

CICS: Customer Information Control System (CICS) isa transaction server that runs primarily on IBM mainframesystems under z/OS and z/VSE.

DB2: IBM DB2 is a relational model database

server developed by IBM. COBOL: COmmon Business-Oriented Language is the

name of the COBOL compiler developed for IBMenvironments.

Who is the system programmer? In a mainframe IT organization, the system programmer(or

systems programmer) plays a central role. The systemprogrammer installs, customizes, and maintains the operatingsystem, and also installs or upgrades products that run on thesystem.

Who is the system administrator? The distinction between system programmerand systemadministratorvaries widely among mainframe sites. In smaller ITorganizations, where one person might be called upon toperform several roles, the terms may be used interchangeably.

Who are the application designers and programmers? The application designerand application

programmer(or "application developer") design, build, test, anddeliver mainframe applications for the company's end users andcustomers. Based on requirements gathered from businessanalysts and end users, the designer creates a designspecification from which the programmer constructs anapplication. The process includes several iterations of code

changes and compilation, application builds, and unit testing.

    Who is the system operator?

The system operatormonitors and controls the operationof the mainframe hardware and software. The operatorstarts and stops system tasks, monitors the system consolesfor unusual conditions, and works with the systemprogramming and production control staff to ensure the

health and normal operation of the systems. Who is the production control analyst?

Theproduction control analyst is responsible for makingsure that batch workloads run to completion withouterror or delay.

What roles do vendors play?A number of vendor roles are commonplace in themainframe shop.

Who uses mainframes and why do

    they do it?

Everyone has used a mainframe computer at onepoint or another. Example: If you have ever used an

automated teller machine (ATM) to interact with yourbank account, you used a mainframe.

Perform large-scale transaction processing (thousandsof transactions per second)

Support thousands of users and application programsconcurrently accessing numerous resources

Manage terabytes of information in databases

    Handle large-bandwidth communication

CICS has its highest profile among financial

institutions such as banks and insurance companies, over 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies are reportedto run CICS along with many government entities.CICS is also widely used by many smaller

organizations. CICS is used in bank-tellerapplications, ATM systems, industrial productioncontrol systems, insurance applications, and manyother types of interactive applications.
