Communications

In Television/Movies we are always communicating in one way or other.

Page 14: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

CommunicationsCommunication is very active in the realm of TV/Movie Production. Because of its importance we are going to explore this week about Communication & how important it is to us in today's society.

Page 15: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Just what is Communication?

Page 16: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

What is Communications

Succeeding in getting a desired response. The word communication with its prefix "c-o-m" meaning "together" implies an interaction between speaker and listener. It is two people or a group of people speaking to each other.

Page 17: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Eye Contact

Part of having Communication is eye contact. Eye Contact is looking out over an audience or person with your eyes not looking down.

Page 18: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Communication

Students communicate in many forms and with many different situations. Such as you will communicate one way with your parents, another way with your teachers and another way with your peers

Page 19: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Why is it important to talk

or to speak?

Page 20: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Why is it important to talk or to speak?

Communicating with other people is important to fulfill a social need.

Page 21: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Can you imagine your life without speech?

You could not communicate your message very well to others and it would be a total frustration to you.

Page 22: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Would you have problems

communicating if you did not know

how to speak? (Why)

Page 23: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Yes, communication would be a challenge.

We are communicating everyday of our life in almost everything we do.

Page 24: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Why do we talk?

Page 25: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

We talk to communicate & fulfill a social need. Humans need to feel wanted or needed without talking it doesn't give a person the satisfaction they need

Page 26: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

How do people improve their talking?

Page 27: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Through repetition: Practice, Practice, and Practice. This is how people learn. That is one of the reasons you go to school is to help you learn how to improve your writing & speaking abilities

How do people improve their talking?

Page 28: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Again are they communicating?

Can babies communicate?

Page 29: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Yes, babies do communicate to others through crying, smiling, moving of arms & legs.

Page 30: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Can babies talk normally?

Page 31: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

No-Speech/talking has to be learned. Just like you as a student today your speaking abilities had to be learned. Yet we take it for granted.

When you lose your voice you can appreciate how important it is to communicate.

Page 32: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Again it is through repetition or practice speaking around people. As you practice, just like little children learn, you are able to communicate better.

Page 33: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

When you talk generally there are people present, for without talking who needs to speak.

What is the social function for speaking?

Page 34: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Eye Contact Partner Activity

Now find someone that you don't know very well and look at them right in the eyes and have them look at you in the eyes and tell them a favorite movie you liked and why.

Page 35: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

What is that called as you looked at the person right next to you?

Eye Contact

Page 37: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Was it hard for you to talk with them because you didn't know them that well?

Page 38: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Now find a partner in the class you might know and share a favorite TV show & why?

Page 39: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

What if it had been someone in your family or a close friend would it have even been easier for you to share your favorite TV/movie?

Page 40: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Let’s talk about

Peers.

Page 41: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

What is the definition of

Peers?

Page 42: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

What are Peers?Your friends & students with whom you come in contact on a regular basis. There is a lot of communication between Peers during the school year.

Page 43: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Question about your Peers?

The following are questions for you to think about as I say them.

You are not required to answer them but if you want to make a comment that would be great:

Page 44: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Questions about your Peers?Have you ever thought or asked your shelf how do I sound to my peers?

What do they think about me?

Does it really matter what my peers think about me?

Do I let my peers influence me?

Page 45: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Peer Influence

What influence of communication will my peers have on me now that could influence me for the rest of my life?

Page 47: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Peer Influence Story

U.S. Brigadier General Sherian Cadoria once told a story about a childhood incident that made a big impact on her life. She and her brother and sister went shopping, and the cashier gave them back a penny too much change.

Page 48: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Peer Influence StoryWhen they got home and told their mom what had happened, she made them walk three miles back to the store to return the money. She punished all three of them because she believed that one of them should have known it was wrong and spoken up.

Page 49: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Peer Influence StoryBrigadier General Cadoria learned a lesson she never forgot. Remember, it takes only one person in a group to say "This is wrong." It takes only one person to make a difference. The next time you are faced with peer pressure, do the right thing. Remember this story and be a leader!

Page 50: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

We learn to talk under social influence this happens in our families, at school, at work etc. The environment we live in can influence our communication.

Page 51: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

People gain co-operation and control of others through speaking. Such as our current presidential election in 2012 Obama vs Romney. Each of them are trying to communicate and get control of your vote so they can get elected.

Page 52: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Through the social purpose we want listeners to understand, to feel, to believe in our speech.

Page 53: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

What would happen if you said something to someone and they didn't respond but just walked away from you?

How would you feel?

Did communication still happen?

Page 54: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

What does ones talking reveal about a person?

Page 55: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

It reveals everything about you. Every time you open your mouth and say one sentence, no matter what the words, you reveal something about yourself.

Page 56: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

So finally can someone tell me what communication is all about?

Page 57: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Succeeding in getting a desired response. It is an interchange of ideas a "togetherness" a two way sharing process between individuals or groups of people.

Page 58: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Page 60: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Communicating with other students & people we should work on being positive.

William Blake, English poet, painter, and master engraver, has engraved these words into the character of many:

As a man is, so he sees.

Communication Statement

Page 61: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

He's talking about perception - how a person views the world. The word comes from the Latin percipere, which means to grab hold of. So the question of the day is: How do you grab hold of life? Do you hold the negative or the positive? Do you see the glass as half full or half empty?

Communication Review

Page 62: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, great American author and public speaker, tells us there is power in positive thinking. Today, watch those negative thoughts. Instead, be positive and be powerful!

Communication of being Positive

Page 63: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

So this school year I would like to challenge you to be like what Norman Vincent Peale stated and have a Positive Outlook on High School and particularly this class. Let’s be positive and communicate to others positively as we work together.

Communication of Being Positive

Page 64: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Now something to think about: Did the TV/Movies Bingo game that we played were the printed words on the sheet communicating to us?

How did it communicate if the sheets of paper did not talk to each of us?

Communicating without words

Page 65: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

The words gave us an impression in your mind and so silently in your mind it is communicating what the TV program or the Movies was about.

Communicating without words

Communicating without words

Page 76: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

When did the silent movies play? 1900’s-1930’s

My own father back in the 1920s & 1930s told me about going to silent movies they were great. Today if we watched a silent movie it would be boring to us. But up to that time they had never experienced movies. The plan is to have you experience a silent movie

Communicating without words

Page 77: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Communicating with others particularly in video sometimes can be easy and some- times hard.

Non-verbal communication is an important part of TV Production.

Since communication in TV/Movies is really important when did we learn to first communicate as humans?

How did communication begin and what role did it play in history & the printed word?

History of Communication & Movies

Page 80: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

Communication covers many areas and has a long history that we take for granted.

Many of us take for granted the use of paper & pen to write with.

History of Communication & Movies

Page 81: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

As you write a note, letter etc., have you ever thought what it would be like if these items were never invented?

History of Communication & Movies

Page 82: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

We take email, faxes, cell phones, computers, palm pilots/black berry/IPODS etc. for granted when it has been with in the last 20 to 25 years that these were brought to the knowledge of the public use. Some of these even in the last 10 to 15 years.

History of Communication & Movies

Page 83: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

When did television begin?

When did we have our first movies?

Again all of these have to do with communication. It is so important to us to have all these nice things such as email, faxes, cell phones, computers, palm pilots/,I-pods but how did it all start? When did it begin?

History of Communication & Movies

Page 84: IB Film I & II. TV Production Work Evaluation Work Skill Points Daily be on time & at work – 6 Pillars of CHS (weekly) 50 Daily start of class assignments

When did communication move to television & movies that leads us to our next activity finding out more about how communication & the printed word started and transitioning through today?
