Academic Honor PolicyAll students must sign the policy prior to starting the Pre-IB Program. They will resign this document again as sophomores.
Pre-CASThe Diploma Programme has CAS - Creativity, Action, Service: A three-part project which encourages student engagement with a purpose. Each year, you will pick two of these to focus on.
Creativity - exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance
Activity - physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyleService - collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need
What about Bright Futures?Pre-IB students will be encouraged to log 50 to 60 hours during their Freshman and Sophomore years (25-30 hours per year.) Your Pre-CAS hours will count towards your Bright Futures!
Pre-CAS Next StepsYou can find all Pre-CAS Documents on the WPHS Website on the Pre-IB page.
Freshmen will meet with Mrs. Cechman in the next few weeks to discuss Pre-CAS information.
What is a Normal Pre-IB Student
Every child is different, but in general this is what to expect:
★ 1-3 hours of homework
○ Provided students are not procrastinating
★ Students should get 8 hours of sleep
★ Students will fluctuate between, “I got this” and
overwhelmed.
Transitioning to High School➔ Students will have some level of transitioning to the world of High School➔ This is completely normal and OK - goal this year is to find strategies that work➔ Part of this transition is learning to be Proactive and advocates for themselves.➔ Some students take 2 weeks and some will take 2 months…..this is OK.➔ Things to keep in mind…….
◆ We have amazing students who like to overachieve and are used to academic success
◆ They want to be successful◆ They will over work - doing the work of a 100 pt. assignment for a 10 pt. one ◆ 9 times out of 10, they should not have over an hour of HW in one subject in
one night….stop after an hour and ask the teacher◆ Keep an eye out for procrastination◆ Are they maximizing their time during school◆ No assignment is ever worth getting into an argument over at home
Student Support➢ All teachers have additional office hours that are set aside for students
who might need extra help…...It varies for each teacher.
➢ Students need to be proactive and advocates for themselves.
➢ THEY should be asking teachers how they can get additional help.
➢ Typical times are before school, during lunch times and after school.
➢ Students can also talk with Ms. Cechman
➢ Chill Counselors
➢ Guidance Counselors
➢ Pre-IB Lunch Gatherings to assist with transition
How can I know what work there is?
❏ Students need to be Proactive and Advocate for themselves
❏ Students have planners and should be expected to copy the agenda into their planners each day…..or some other form of a planner. It should be the PRIMARY reference.
❏ Each teacher uses Canvas and ProgressBook❏ Lastly, you can always email the teacher
Parent - Teacher ContactThe IB team has the following procedure for communication and meetings. If you have a problem or concern, please follow the protocols outlined below:
❏ Pre-IB and IB Concerns: Email Mrs. Cechman❏ Subject specific concerns:
❏ Contact the teacher directly either via email or phone.❏ At that time the issue may resolve via email or the teacher may
schedule a time to speak with you on the phone. ❏ If the problem is too complex to solve on the phone, the teacher
will direct you to set up a parent conference❏ All conferences are set up with Ms. Cechman, via email.
When would you Expect a conference?
❏ We grant and schedule Student/Parent Conferences for students in danger of not meeting the requirements for continuing in IB.
❏ Please email Ms. Cechman anytime you think there might be a problem.
❏ You should expect Ms. Cechman to contact you if:❏ Your child has dropped below the 3.0 GPA line❏ If teachers are concerned for other reasons (student
seems upset or unhappy)
New to WPHS?Many of our IB students come from other districts and are just beginning to meet new friends. If you would like to get together with students and parents new to WPHS, Ellen Megginson has graciously offered to host get togethers. You can email her at:
