Enrichment Project OverviewWhat are you going to do?

You are invited to help the new owners of a hotel improve their operations by completing tasks which should increase business.You will have two learning cycles to complete all of these tasks. Tasks will be set by your teacher and will be due in the order that they are assigned.

•At the end of the entire project, you and your team will present all of the information and pieces you have created along the way in a large group presentation day. You must keep careful records of each individual task, organize your time well, and contribute well to your team.

•You will be graded on individual tasks, completion of those tasks, being on-time, group participation, your design and ideas, and other goals set by your teacher.

• Think about some of your past hotel experiences. Where was the hotel? What did you do there? What kinds of things were offered at the hotel?

• What made your hotel experience positive? Give details and say why.

The Seaside Hotel Today

• The Seaside Hotel is located in a magnificent setting overlooking the Arabian Sea. It has a private, sandy beach and a large outdoor swimming pool.

• The hotel has 24 double rooms, 6 family rooms (sleeps 2 adults and 2-4 children), 10 single rooms, and one penthouse suite (sleeps 6-10 adults and includes kitchen and formal living room).

• The hotel has a superb first-floor dining room with a large glass wall overlooking the magnificent sea view. It also has a large lounge and breakfast area, a basement games room, and a large unused area which could be changed into a fitness area/spa facility in the future.

• There is a very good team of workers at the hotel including a concierge, reception staff, a night porter, an excellent chef and kitchen staff, restaurant waiters/waitresses, maids, and maintenance workers.

A Need for Change

• The hotel is making a small profit, but is rarely full and not making the most of its superb facilities, location, and staff.

• The hotel logo is very outdated and old-fashioned. The hotel needs a new logo and mission statement to attract guests.

• The hotel does not have a good method for advertising. It needs a new brochure and website to promote itself on the Internet.

• The past guest list needs to be updated into a spreadsheet for easy mailing and sending promotional information to.

• A new budget spreadsheet to work out staff salaries must be created and entered into the operating system.

• We are the new owners of the Seaside Hotel and we want to make some big changes. We are writing you because you have an excellent reputation for good marketing ideas and improvement strategies. We would like to invite you to submit an idea proposal for the changes we need at our hotel.

• Firstly, we are looking for assistance with the following things:

• 1. A vibrant new logo and mission statement that represents the beauty of our location.

Task 1A: Write an Improvement Proposal (7 points)Steps: 1. Carefully read the email and think about what the needs of the customer are. Make notes and write down ideas.

2.Write a professional business letter back to the Seaside Hotel Management Group and put into your own words what you think is being asked for (analyze the letter). Brainstorm ideas with your team. Use the new vocabulary from their email and your class discussions to write your formal business reply.

3.Once you have written your reply, attach it to an email and send it to your teacher at the email address given to you.

4.Wait for a reply from your teacher (you will receive an email back or discuss your letter in class time).

5.If you are asked to clarify any points, do this and record them (keep notes/assignments organized and with you to every projects class).

Task 1B: Create a flow chart of your proposal plan. (3 points)Steps:1. Collect your team’s notes and ideas for improvement and make a numbered list of what you need to do in which order (organize and synthesize).

2. Go to www.gliffy.com to create your flow chart.

3. Save your team’s flow chart and print it to add to your file. Hand it in for points when your teacher asks for it.

4. Use the flow chart in your planning during the project. Make sure you focus on all areas the customer wants as you plan.

Evaluating the Current Seaside Hotel Logo

Discuss the pros and cons of this design

• The customer’s opinion about their current logo: - “It’s a bit boring and the colors are awful. It doesn’t give the impression of a relaxing, modern, seaside getaway.”

• The customer’s desire: - something professional, not cartoony - something with a clean, bright feel to it - needs to give the feeling of “relaxation, fun, and holiday” in it

• With your group, make a rough draft of what you want your logo to look like.

• Remember, adjusting the color, font, and design can make a big difference.

Maintaining a Customer Database is Key to Sales

According to Royal Mail, an online database collection site, there are two marketing statistics you never want to forget:

“80% of your sales come from 20% of your customers” and “you’ll spend 7 to 10 times more to win a new customer than to increase sales from an existing customer”
