Indo American Yellow Pages Profiles-2016

S. Gurdev Singh Purewal was born on Janu-ary 7, 1942 Village Shankar of Doaba in Jalandhar City.His father Thaman Singh and mother Persin Kaur were de-lighted to have him as their older son. Mr. Gurdev’s prima-ry education was from village Shankar. When Gurdev was 11 year old his father Thaman Singh passed and left the family in dark days for life. Af-ter his father’s death Gurdev Singh was stunned with life’s hardships with his siblings Parmjit and Santokh. In those days life was very hard for their mother as it was a man dominating time in the villag-es of Punjab. Mother Persin kaur decided to move village Badduwal Jila Moga with her parents along with her three children for their safety and to get shelter. Family sold all the land in Village Shankar and moved with Mother Persin’s brothers in Vil-lage Badduwal, Moga.

Gurdev Singh Purwal was the oldest son in family. After moved in his maternal village Gur-dev Singh got admission in the A.D. School Dharamkot in Moga. The life was not easy for the family without Father in those days. Maternal Un-cles used much of the money came from father’s property due to their needful situations, soon the family started living in poverty and it was very hard for the mother to take care of children. Gurdev’s mother was working all day in family home so her children can get love and protection by uncles, aunts and

other family members. Being the oldest son Gurdev Singh under-stood the hardships her mother was bearing because of them and it was very painful for him to see and take all this but he was too young to solve these problems. Gurdev Singh was also helping his mater-nal uncles for farming and other chores. He was very upset to see his mother and brothers not getting the same respect from his uncles, aunts and other family members

Gurdev Singh left the School in Grade 7 and started working in Government Dairy with the help of a Kind hearted man who had sympathy with his family. Gurdev wanted his mother and brothers to live with pride. He

moved away from his fam-ily to give them a good life in a very young age. When-ever he gets off from his Dairy work he often come village Badduwal to see his mother and brothers. He was also often going to see his Massi ( Maternal Aunt) village Sarinh.

While he was working in Dairy, he got work in Bhogpur Sugar Mills with a nice helpful man. He lived with his Mas-si in village Sarihn when he worked in Bhogpur Sugar Mills and often going to see his mother and broth-ers in Badduwal.

Whenever he go to Badduwal he was very upset to see his moth-er and brothers work-ing hard and never get

sympthy but ofter get humiliated by uncles and aunts. He wanted to give her mother the gift of happi-ness but he still could not do it and was feeling very helpless.

With his good work eth-ics he was transferred from Bhog-pur sugar mills to Jagadhari. He got responsibility of giving slips to the workers and sellers in the sug-arcane season. It was a very risky work as many farmers with power wanted to get the slip for selling their crops faster. Gurdev Singh was working with very honesty and hard work. He never did any dis-honest act with any farmer or work-er. Once a wicked farmer asked him to give him slip first with bribe as

he did not want to wait in line. Having an honest behavior Gur-dev Singh refused to do take any bribe and did not let him break the rules. Farmer got mad and he threatened him to life that night.

Gurdev Singh knew the power of bad farmer and scared of his life, he thought about his mother and brothers he left the job and took train to the village. After mother heard the story she got more worried about how to find another job for him. There is no use crying over something that has already finished/happened. It was not easy to get a job in those days; family was depending on Gurdev Singh’s Salary.

Gurdev Singh said to mother (If ) there’s life, then there’s the world. He went back to his uncle’s farm for work for family. Those days were very dif-ficult. While trying to avoid a bad situation one might end up in an even worse situation. It was not easy to live with humiliation while you work for your maternal uncles and aunts. His mother was always requesting village people for his son a better job.

In 1959 A kind hearts named person S. Kishan Singh from his maternal extended Family helped him and registered in Phi-rozpur Army Sector. Kishan Singh even gave him some money to spend of food and living while on army training. S. Gurdev Singh of-ten told his family about this kind help from Kishan Singh. All of his life he had the feeling that the as-sistance he received from Kishan singh can never be forgotten. Re-membering him he always helped other needed.

He loved his Maternal Grandpa. Gurdev Singh often told his family that Grandpa never took any money from his salary he al-ways advised him ‘“give the salary to your mother as she is always in need and looks help from you.” His grandpa loved him so much and af-ter some time he passed away and there was no one to share the prob-lems with.

1962 India-China war started and Gurdev Singh partici-pated in it. His Battalion fought with courage . Many Army men died in the war. Gurdev Singh and some other ounded fighters walked and came to Kashmir. Wounded sol-

diers received medical help and after getting well they were sent back to Battal-ion.

In 1964 Gur-dev singh’s Mother passed away. This was the worst news for Gurdev Singh. He started giving his salary to his uncles because his younger brother moved with uncles and helped them in farming. Indo-Pak war started in 1965 . Mr Gurdev Purewal on holiday vacation in their village. He received a telegram ording to join back right away due to war. Mr Purewal went back to duty and partici-pated in the war. Many of his battalion soldiers got martyred. Mr. Gurdev was one of the nine soldiers escaped from death in the war. some time passed and he started collecting money for a small home for him and brothers. He

sent money to his uncle for buying a land for him and

brother. but uncle bought land on his name instead of Gurdev Singh. After knowing the reality of his un-cle Gudev Singh felt a big ditch in the relation. After he had trouble he could not have a good relation with his uncles.

Gurdev singh decid-ed to make his own home and brought his brothers with him. He got married with Ranjit Kaur from village Bilga in Doaba. His uncles evicted him from the property af-ter his marraige. Gurdev Singh was still working in army. five fam-ilies including his maternal aunts ( Massi) helped him to get back his maternal property from wicked un-

cles. His uncle divided the Sa-rihn property in seven parts, 4 parts were for brother and sons and 3 parts to Purewal brothers. Now Gurdev Singh was old enough to ask ques-tion about what happened about his Father’s Property Money and the salary he sent to him. but uncle replied that he spent all of his father’s money for Gurdev and his brother’s education and he completely refused to re-ceive any salary money from him. All of this happened because there was no one to take care of the earning and property of his father after his father’s death and uncles took benefit of it.

Purewal brothers started their life again with hard work. Gurdev Singh loved his brothers so much and always stood with them in need. He helped his brothers in their marriage so they can start a good family life.

In 1972 he was in his village from army vacation and recieved another telegram for joining the duty due to 1972 In-dia_Pak war. Village friends were very surprised that whenever Gur-dev come to vacation he mostly gets a telegram for joining back to duty for war. Gurdev singh said “ we get paid because it is our duty to protect our contry”. He was a very brave soldier and he loved his country so much.

In 1972 Indo-Pak war Gurdev singh was very badly won-ded with Bomb explosion. and brought to Calcutta for treatment. He was in medical care for long

time many of the explosion piec-es could not be removed from his body because they were very close to his nerves. Doctors suggested to leave them in his body because removing them can be fetal for his life. This is the third time he nar-rowly escaped from death. After hospital realse he want back to join the duty.

In 1979 Gurdev singh helped his brother Paramjit in his marriage during the army vaca-tion. After marraige and vacation when Gurdev Singh went back to his duty he was delighted to know that he has been promoted as ‘Subedar’. Family was very happy to find about Gurdev singh’s new Promotion. In 1979 army vacation

his cousin suggested him to go to Canada with him. He came Canada for Vacation with cous-ins. He saw many opportunities in foreign country and decided to come here permanently. He lived about 2 years in Canada and moved to America.

He was very hard working and even worked three jobs at a time to make his fam-ily live better in Punjab. Being a soldier Gurdev singh always fought with hardships of life. He worked as a farmer, and found-ry worker in America. He always remembered and thanked wa-heguru for all he recieved in his life.

In 1985 he started his own Landscaping Business. After he moved to foreign in 1979, first time he went back ot india in 1986 to see his family and friends. Family was definitly in better financial situation due to his hardships by now. after 1986 he often went to see his

family and stayed there for two to three months. Finally he applied for permanent immigration for his family to America in 1987 but due to some legal issues it could not happened. In 1990 his wife and children came to America. Purew-al’s older son Pavitarpal helped in dad’s business. Purewal could not stop his sensitive feelings to un-derstand that his little son could to this much he is sure grown up and very hard working. He was very sure to understand that the his new generation is also ready to take care of their responsibilities and just like a new bird they are ready to fly in the sky.

ers were the reason of his heart still attached with India. In 1996 he heard a heartfull bad news about his brother Paramjit. Paramjit died due to heart attack in Punjab. Gurdev Singh did his full efforts to bring Paramjit’ wife and his chilren in American. Final-ly Gurdev’s other younger broth-er also arrived in America. This was the best time in Gurdev’s life

With family man-pow-er and Purewal’s guidance they all started growing financially and climbed to the top of their profes-sion soon. Their interest grew in rockery business along with land-scaping. after buying big machi-nary residential and commercial work was lined up . Purewal’s older son studied engineering and drafting which helped to do better in family business. Gurdev Singh always adviced his yonger ones to never leave hope and al-ways hard working in life.

After their first Renton city contract they had a big line up of city contracts. More work

means more bigger machinery needed. Being a big joint family they purchased a land for a bigger home for them to have a dream home for family in 2000. by the 2001 Gurdev’s both brothers families also moved in America. Brothers sons also start work and little kids went to school for ed-ucation. it was all happiness and fun for the whole family. They all worked hard and earned a special respect in the community. They even owned land for machinery parking, offices and work places. This was the very uplifting time for a joint hardworking family

The Dream home con-struction started and hopes get better for Gurdev Singh and his brother. All family moved in New home in 2003 with great happi-ness and new hopes. No woman and child worked in family. Wom-en always took care of children and enjoyed most of their time which is a blessing in America otherwise women has to work hard like men and take care of children and family as well. Gur-dev his older son and younger brother’s older sons were work-ing for all the business. All of them worked hard as a team and earned a higher respect in com-munity and society.

In 2007 Gurdev’s younger brother’s son sudden-ly left the home. Gurdev and his brother was very upset with his decision. Gurdev suggested his brother to go with him and help him in his life. But brother re-fused to leave Gurdev Singh. Lat-er his brother brought the upset son back home. In 2008 young-er brother’s daughter got mar-

ried. After marriage his younger brother and his son left home and started living on their own. But younger son of brother was still with Gurdev Singh. Younger son also moved out of home af-ter marriage. Gurdev Singh loved his brothers and his family. He broke after their departure. Later younger brother went to India and took possession of the Gur-dev Singh’s made home in Pun-jab. Gurdev Singh Purewal did not want to fight with his brother and he started making his home in Punjab. Purewal liked to live in 6 months in India and 6 months in America. He has shown so much generosity in the Punjab, helping poor. Helped poor brides to get married, sports tournaments, and medical treatment for poor, free eye camps are some he has given to the village and around areas. He has suffered poverty in his life so he always tried to help the per-son needed in village and even helped the village advancements whenever needed.

October 2013 he got sick with Cancer. Family tried best for his medical treatment. all sons, daughters, brothers and their families did the best they could do. Gurdev Singh was a fighter from birth and he fought the decease with courage, even the last days he never left hope. But in the end after three escapes of war death he lost his life with deadly cancer. In the morning of May 23, 2014 he said a last good-bye to his family and friends. S. Gurdev Singh Purewal will always be remembered in the hearts of his family for generations.

ROSHNI, the publication of south Asia, rightly described Princy as, “ A dentist, mentor and social activ-ist, this young explorer is on his way to charter new direc-tions and leave inspirational legacy for future generations to emulate “. Since the publication, Princy Rekhi has been the youngest person and the first Indian ever to be elected as President of the Seattle King County Dental society. He served in that position during the year 2013-14. Prior to that Princy served on the council and has been a dele-

gate from the State of Washington to the American Dental Association. Princy is also on the the Board of Directors for the Seattle King County Dental foundation. Recently Dr Rekhi got selected as a professor in the School of Dentistry in the University of Washington serving only one day a week to take care of his three dental practices located in Kirkland, Renton and Edmonds. Dr Princy Rekhi is one of the only four doctors selected by American Dental Association to visit various dental Schools in America to provide guidance to the students about their careers after gradua-tion. The partial list of achievements should allay the fears of young Sikhs that the Sikhi Sarup may be a risk to their success. As everyone is aware, Dr Rekhi is a turbaned Gursikh and strong believer in the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib Jee.

Princy Rekhi had all his education in America. He graduated from Inglemoore High School as a valedictori-an. He successfully competed for one of the 25 positions to get admission in School of Dentistry right after high school. Though being a turbaned Sikh, Princy has been a respected member of the student community and won election in the Student councils. He has been President of the student union as well in Kansas City. He graduated in the year 2003 at the age of 23 when some kids can not even decide about their career. He has been the young-est dentist licensed to practice Dentistry in the State of Washington. Princy bought his own practice in the same year in Highland Area of Renton. Being dedicated to his profession, intelligent and caring, even his patients have been referring their relatives, friends to his practice, with much success, Princy bought his second practice just after two years in Edmonds, Washington, Currently, and Dr Rekhi owns three dental practices known as Highland Dental Centers.

Dr Rekhi has always been humble and readily avail-able to the needy. He has been passionate about helping our young professionals to reach new heights. Dr Rekhi took time to attend a few of the youth sikh symposiums and has been an inspiration speaker on atleat three occasions.On the cultural side, Princy has been Gener-al Secretary of the India Arts and Culture Association (IACA) for eight years. He organized at least two cultural shows in a year namely: Vaisakhi and Diwali. This was to encourage our youth to be in touch with our heritage. Being a devout Sikh, Princy will start each show with a Shabad from Gurbani. We profeesed not only the culture of Punjab, but almost every part of it. We had Punja-bi Gidha, Bhangra, Rajasthani Dances, Gujrati Dandia, Telgu dances to state a few.

On inspiration of Princy Rekhi, IACA entered into a venture of selecting Miss India ( WA ) IACA to represent our community in SEAFAIR Parades and compete for the CROWN which carried a scholarship of several thousand dollars. Dr Rekhi donates majority of the funds for trophies, prizes, arrange-ments etc. Mr Rekhi supports other orga-nizations like VIRSA, and a few others as well. Dr Rekhi is a caring professional and is always available to serve the needy.

DR Rekhi got married to Dr Gulbadan Kaur in 2013. The Almighty Waheguru jee blessed them with a son Gagan Singh Rekhi in March 2015. Dr Rekhi belongs to a highly educated and respectable fami-ly of Seattle. His father, Surinder S Rekhi has been a senior class one officer in the federal Ministry of Industries at New Del-hi. His mother Parminder Rekhi has been an officer in State Bank of India in Con-naught place before migrating to USA. Both of his parents have been working for the City of Seattle government for the last 30 years. Princy’s sister Dr Tisha Rekhi got married to Dr Maninder Singh who is a di-rector of anesthesiology department in a hospital in Ohio State. One of Dr Rekhi’s cousins, Dr Tina Subherwal recently moved from North Carolina to Seattle. Her husband is a senior cardiologist at a local hospital here. All of his remaining cousins are

doctors except one who is a prominent attorney in Seattle.

IACA was founded by Surinder Singh Rekhi and Parminder Kaur Rekhi with main purpose of providing social, cultur-al, and leadership skills to our youth. We intended to instill the high moral values of the Indian community in the young gen-eration and to keep our culture alive for our future generations. In addition, IACA provides guidance to the youth in the educational field to enable them choose a suitable career and an appropriate insti-tution for higher education. In addition, IACA intends to improve mutual under-standing and appreciation between the Indian community and the main stream American community.

IACA holds two major cultural shows in the months of April and October of each year namely Vaisakhi and Diwali. In addition, IACA holds a completion to

select a MISS INDIA ( WA ) IACA each year providing a scholarship of a minimum of $ 1000. In addi-tion, IACA sponsors the winner of the competition to the SEAFAIR and national events for a variety of crowns. IACA has not held such completion for the last three years, since the selection of Nitasha Mago as MISS INDIA ( WA ) . We will be selecting Miss India ( WA ) in the month of April for the MISS INDIA

Hardeep Singh Rekhi is an owner and partner of Rekhi & Wolk, P.S. His practice focuses on immigra-tion, individual employee rights as well as class action wage and hour litigation. He has been an attorney for over 10 years. Prior to becoming an attorney, he at-tended Whitman College, in Walla Walla, Washington. Mr. Rekhi earned his law degree at Tulane Law School, Cum Laude. After law school he came back to Seattle to start his legal career.

Mr. Rekhi’s practice encompasses all aspects of federal and state civil rights litigation with respect to employment, including discrimination, wrongful termination, failure to accommodate, and sexual ha-rassment. His practice includes representing employ-ees to recover for unpaid wages, including overtime. Since his first days as a lawyer, he has practiced in the employment law sector. He began his career defending employment claims made against larger companies. Soon thereafter, he shifted his focus to representing employees. His diverse experience allows him to better represent his clients.

In addition to his employment practice, he has an immigration practice helping individuals gain status in this country. Mr. Rekhi is a product of immigrant parents that moved to the Seattle in 1969. While Mr. Rekhi was born and raised in Seattle, he has not lost touch with his immigrant roots. He is an advocate

for immigrants both in his professional capacity and through his work as a past board member of Oneamer-ica, an organization recognized nationally as leader in immigrants rights movement.

Mr. Rekhi has been recognized by his peers as ded-icated to providing excellent representation. He was presented the Carl Maxey Award in 2012. From 2013 to 2015 he was selected as a “super lawyer.” He was the editor of the first edition of Civil Rights Desk Book. He has also co-authored the Race Discrimination chapter in the Employment Law Desk Book.

Even outside the office, Mr. Rekhi is dedicated to advocating for a fair judicial systems for individuals. Currently he sits on the board for the Washington Employment Lawyers Association (WELA), an orga-nization of plaintiffs’ employment lawyers. He is also a board member for The South Asian Bar Association of Washington. He is an Eagle Member at Washington State Association for Justice.

Ajwant Goraya, DDSDr. Goraya was born and raised in India,

San Francisco Indian Consul General Visits Sikh Center of Seattle

SEATTLE, Ore. — Indian Consul General Venkatesan Ashok, accompanied by his team from the Consulate General of India office in San Francisco, recently visited the Sikh Center of Seattle.

Ashok, who joined the consulate’s office in Novem-ber 2014, was welcomed by the management of the Sikh Center of Seattle.

Because the Indian com-munities living in the states

of Washington and Oregon have to go to San Francisco for their passports, travel visas and other consulate services, the community is requesting that a consulate be set up in the Seattle area.

In addressing the Sikh congregation, Ashok gave his assurance that the consider-ation of a Seattle consulate office is his top priority. Ashok and his team also answered questions relating to various

visa problems that Indian Americans are currently facing.

It was also announced that the Indian Consulate office is planning for the first time to celebrate India In-dependence Day in Seattle, which falls on Aug. 15, 2015.

In conclusion, SikhTemple president Manmohan Singh Dhillion thanked the attend-ees for their time.

• Kirtan Curriculum for those chidren who have aptitude and interest in learning Kirtan so they can appreciate and nurture the Sikh musical traditions.

• Sikh way of life is demonstrated through Gurmat camps, and doing selfless ser-vice(sewa).

• Public speaking will continue to play an important role in the Khalsa Gurmat

School curriculum, as it is a basis for cre-ating confident young adults and foster-ing leadership skills.

We would like our students to grow up into young Sikh adults who are proud of their heri-tage; are comfortable with the Sikh identity; practice the Sikh way of life and raise Gursikh families.

Parent Volunteer Hours Nishkam Sewa is a long standing part of our belief system. All families are asked to plan on a minimum of 10 hours of service to the

school per year. This service is reported on an honor’s system and tracked in the office. We make every effort to connect parents talents and skills with school needs, but parents need to also be proactive to volunteer as school needs arise. We are more than ever depen-dent on your support. Service can be in the form of teaching and teaching assistance, driving to events, helping to set up the school venue, and so on. Oppor-

tunities for service will be listed throughout the year. Please make sure you take you sub-mit your volunteer hours to the school ad-ministration.We strongly encourage all parents whose children that are enrolled in the school to also continue to make attending the Gurdwara a regular part of their Sunday routine to rein-force the teaching from the school.
