Hammertons Funeral Directors have roots at Worsbrough Dale going back over two hundred years. In the early days the business was located on

Goose Holes Lane, adjacent to the former Dove and Dearne canal, near the Boatmans Rest Public House. As well as being the local undertakers, Hammerton’s were also

wheelwrights and joiners. Their location near the canal, enabled timber for the joinery business, to be delivered by barge to their workshop, which for many years housed

woodworking machinery which was steam driven.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, a generator was obtained to power the woodworking machinery by electricity. In 1907 when Francis Hammerton built a new

house for the family, known as The Mount on Station Road (now Autumn House Nursing Home) this became the first house in the area to have electric lighting.

By this time the firm was involved with much of the house building in the expanding Worsbrough area and in 1901 were commissioned by local colliery owner Samuel Joshua Cooper to build the Church of St. James on West Street. Around 1925 the joinery workshop was moved from Goose Holes to a new building on Station Road

(now occupied by Lowerdale Autos).

1984 saw the business move to larger premises on Wakefield Road, Barnsley where Hammerton’s are now firmly established as the areas leading funeral directors.

In 1977 Mr. Ian Hammerton took over the long established business at Thurnscoe of local funeral director George Bateman; the Dearne area office was relocated to new

purpose built premises at Barnsley Road, Goldthorpe in 2011.

A complete funeral service is offered including Private Chapels of Rest, modern fleet of Mercedes limousines and excellent catering facilities.

Floral tributes and memorials can be arranged.

FLORAL TRIBUTES OUR SPECIALITY

Page 8: Ian Hammerton Funeral Director

Death is nothing at all.

I have only slipped away into the next room...

I am I and You are You.

Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way

which you always used. Put no difference into your tone;

Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrows.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.

Let it be spoken without effect, without the ghost of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was;

there is absolutely unbroken continuity.

What is this death, but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind, because I am out of sight?

I am waiting for you, for an interval. Somewhere very near just around the corner... All is well.

Henry Scott Holland
