APPOINTMENT OF MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEER.

APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment to a position of Mechanical and Electrical Engineer on the staff of

the Council's Head Office, Melbourne. Duties.-General consultation and design work in connexion

with buildings, services, plant, fittings, &c., for the Council's laboratories situated in various parts of Australia, including giving specialist advice in connexion with pilot plant and other similar experimental projects.

Qualifications.- University degree in mechanical and elec- trical engineering. Should be conversant with engineering workshop and foundry practice.

Salary.- Dependent on qualifications and experience, salary to be within limits £800- £1,000 per annum.

Subject to a satisfactory medical éxaanivation, the success- ful applicant will be appointed initially on probation for a period of twelve months, but thereafter, if confirmed in his appointment is an officer of the Council, will be eligible to contribute to, and receive benefits from, either the Common- wealth Superannuation Fund or the Commonwealth Provident Fund.

PROMOI1ONS- SECTION 50 AND REGULATION 109. THE following promotions are provisional and subject to appeal by officers to the Public Service Board, and, where consequent upon

another provisional promotion, shall be dependent upon the latter being confirmed. Appeals should be lodged, either by letter or telegram, within twenty -one days of the date of this notification, as follows :-

(a) if the promotion is to be made in a State, with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector in the capital city of that State ; (b) if the promotion is to be made in the Australian Capital Territory, with the Public Service Inspector in Canberra, unless the

promotion is to be made to a vacancy in the Postmaster -General's Department. in which case the officer shall lodge his appeal with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Sydney:

(c) if the. promotion is to be made in the Northern Territory :- (i) with the Commonwealth Public Service Inspector, Brisbane, in the case of a promotion to a vacancy in the Department

Under Section 50 (7A) of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, the Board may regard an appeal as having been made against a provisional promotion notified hereunder by any officers who, at any time within the time prescribed for lodging an appeal, are absent on leave for war service.

Where an officer desires to appeal against two or more provisional promotions a separate appeal should be lodged in respect of each, except where the provisional promotions appealed against are to positions of similar classification in the same Branch of a Department, when one appeal covering such provisional promotions will be accepted. .

. The grounds of appeal must be as prescribed in Section 60 of the Commonwealth Public Service Act, viz.: - (a) Superior efficiency ; or (b) Equal efficiency combined with seniority.

VACANCIES. -It is estimated that twenty -five (25) appoint - ments will be made within the twelve months' period of eligibility.

ELIGIBILITY.---A successful candidate will be eligible for appointment in the Sydney metropolitan area until the expiration of twelve months commencing on the date of the publication in the Commonwealth Gazette of the results of the examination, provided that a successful candidate under the age fixed by the law of the State as the school leaving age will not be eligible for appointment until he attains that age. .

APPOINTMENT SUBJECT TO Co rnITIONs. -Upon appointment a successful candidate must produce evidence of the date of his birth and a medical certificate satisfying the Board in such particulars as it may determine of sound bodily health and freedom from physical defects. Successful candidates should not undergo medical examination until instructed to do so. Upon the confirmation of his appointment an officer will also be required to contribute to the Commonwealth Superannuation Fund.

Qualified candidates who on appointment are already tem- porarily employed, or who take up duty within fourteen days of the date of issue by the Chief Officer of notification of appointment and request to report for duty, will be regarded for seniority purposes as having entered the Commonwealth Service on the date of the Public Service Inspector's appoint- ment certificate. ` REFUSAL of APPOINTMENT.-If a successful candidate declines to accept an appointment offered to him, or fails to reply within seven days to a communication from the Board. a Public Service Inspector, or the Deputy Director, Pdsts and Telegraphs, respecting his nomination to the Public Service, his name may be removed from the " Register of Persons Qualified for Appointment ".
