The poem I Wonder is a poem about a rather intelligent and perceptive child who is curious about her surroundings.
In this poem, the child is curious about the elements of nature. Throughout the poem, the child's inquisitiveness is displayed through her questions about things around us.
Synopsis
Couplet 1 I wonder why the grass is green And why the wind is never seen The persona is wondering about her
surroundings and questions why the grass is green and not other colour.
The persona also wonders why she cannot see the wind although she can feel it.
Understanding the poem
Couplet 2Who taught the birds to build a nest, And told the trees to take a rest?She is curious and continues to wonder who
taught the birds to build a nest and how do the trees know when to stop growing.
Couplet 3 O, when the moon is not quite around, Where can the missing bit be foundShe continues to ask about the moon when it
is not fully seen, wondering where the other half is hiding.
Couplet 4Who lights the star, when they blow out, And makes the lightning flash about?She wonders who lights the stars at night and
blows them out in the day and who makes the lightning flash about.
Couplet 5Who paints the rainbow in the sky, And hangs the fluffy clouds so high?She keeps on asking who gave the rainbows
its colours and puts the clouds high in the sky.
Couplet 6Why is it now, do you suppose That dad won’t tell me, if he knows?She cannot seem to get her answers and
wonders why her father won’t tell her the answer if he knows.

As the day progress into night, the persona observes the moon and the stars.
