He stated the first Working Group meeting in May was very productive and looked forward to today’s discussions regarding aligning curriculum between partner institutions. Angé Peterson gave an overview of the curriculum alignment work that’s been done by the other Working Groups – Math, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. She said everyone involved is committed to helping students succeed through improved curriculum alignment between partner institutions. Angé added K-12 partners are equally committed; however, they have virtually no flexibility in what they teach. Nearly everything is dictated by Florida Department of Education. Their continued involvement keeps them apprised of what students need to be prepared to take college level courses. Angé also said each of the Working Groups are working on surveys, which will eventually be emailed to relevant faculty and administrators at partner institutions. They are designed to determine if curriculum alignment is being implemented and in what areas work still needs to be done. In addition, the Working Groups are reviewing the spreadsheets that were developed several years ago for courses within each discipline and updating what should be covered to help ensure student success as they progress through their academic experience. She concluded her report by stating that advising will be incorporated into the Fall Curriculum Alignment Conference to ensure advisors become a part of the curriculum alignment work going forward.

The group agreed to identify each of the introductory Engineering courses at each of the institutions represented at the meeting and list what courses each partner college and UCF are teaching. Once that was outlined in a grid format, someone from each institution volunteered to send the syllabi for each course so that it can be posted on the Curriculum Alignment website on the Engineering Workspace page. Other discussion

• One of the advising challenges is that course changes do not always get passed on to the advisors and if they do, the changes are not forwarded to faculty/department heads so they can adjust their classes and/or tell students.

• UCF Engineering will invite partner college students and faculty to participate in the 2014 Engineering Week beginning on Monday, February 17.

• UCF Engineering will invite partner college students and faculty to attend Senior Design Day on Friday, April 18, 2014.

• Suggestions for getting more students interested in Engineering and helping them succeed:

o Ask Engineering graduates to speak to students taking EGN/EGS 1006 and 1007 – how to plan and what to expect.

o Testimonials from successful Engineering graduates and ask them to tell their story to high school and college/university students.

• Ask partner colleges and UCF to provide their policy regarding using calculators in class and post on Curriculum Alignment website.
