So….what do you want to learn?
MY FAVOURITE COOPERATIVE LEARNING STRATEGY
THINK-PAIR –SHARE
1.THINK- Read the questions on your sheet.
THINK-PAIR-SHARE con.
• Please choose AT LEAST 3 questions that interest you.
• Rank the questions from 1 to 3.
• 1 interests you the most
• 2 is the next most interesting question
• 3 is the next most interesting question
• Continue ranking the questions if they genuinely interest you !
• 2. Record your responses on the sheet. When you are finished- please turn your paper over.
THINK PAIR SHARE con.
• 3. PAIR- Turn to a partner. Discuss your responses. Try to generate 3 questions that interest both of you. Be persuasive.
• 4. SHARE-Work with everyone at your table. Try to generate 3 questions that interest everyone. Rank those questions from 1 (most interesting) to 3.
• 5. SHARE with the class. We will see what emerges!! C:\Users\owner\Documents\09-student questions-sept.docx
WHAT DOES NOT INTEREST YOU?
1. Create a legend on the top of your page indicating which colour of pencil records the questions that do interest you.
2. Use a different coloured pencil to indicate which questions DO NOT interest you. Record your responses on the page and the colour of pencil in the legend at the top of your page
• When you are finished-place your sheet in the middle of the table. Please have one person from each table hand in these sheets to the hand-in bin
WHY CHOICE?
1. In the past I planned my teaching based on what I needed to learn when I was at the Faculty of Education and what I thought you needed to know to be successful teachers.
Day 1- What is science?
Day 2- Questions and teaching strategies etc.
WHY CHOICE?
I WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT EACH INDIVIDUAL NEEDS TO LEARN RIGHT NOW
WHAT YOU NEED TO LEARN RIGHT NOW IS A RESULT OF YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCES AS A STUDENT AND TEACHER AND INFLUENCED BY HOW YOU PREFER TO LEARN
WHY CHOICE?
1. Research shows that humans make choices/decisions every second, minute hour. You choose what you want to learn and you choose what you want to tune out.
2. Providing choice allows us to connect with students’ interests and their intrinsic motivation.
WHY CHOICE?
• Alfie Kohn- Choices for Children
• 15 minute video clip
What questions do you have about Kohn’s conclusions?
Competition and Caring?Rewards or Recognition?
Working With vs Doing To?
Working With instead of Doing To
• Talk with the people at your table.
• Brainstorm different ways to answer our first question and record your responses on the paper provided.
POE: Predict-Observe-Explainto demonstrate he uncertain nature of
scientific knowledge
• Question? What is inside the black tube that could consistently explain what happens when we pull on the different ropes?
• What happens when I pull on A?
• What happens when I pull on B?
• What happens when I pull on C?
• What happens when I pull on D?
POE: Predict-Observe-Explain
• Question? What will happen when I pull on B?
• PREDICT EXPLAIN
• OBSERVE EXPLAIN
• SO WHAT?
POE: Predict-Observe-Explain
• Question? What will happen when I pull on B?
• OBSERVE EXPLAIN
• SO WHAT? How is this “black box” like our current scientific knowledge?
How do we generate new knowledge about the natural world?
• Scientists make predictions and observations to generate explanations. about the natural world. Some scientists collect data and run controlled experiments. They may think about what they have observed.
How do we generate new knowledge about the natural world?
• They may make more predictions based on the results of their predictions and observations and they might run more experiments to generate explanations. But they never really know for sure if their explanation is correct!!!
