One–Thisbirdhasathickneckandaheavybill.Theysometimesformhugeflocksandcanbeaggressivewithotherbirdssuchashawksandowls,chasingandharassingthem.Theywilleatalmostanything.Thisisanallblack,slightlyglossylookingbird.YoufoundtheAmericanCrow.Two–Thelargebeakofthisbirdisusedtocrushseeds.Themaleisblackandwhiteandhasalarge,redbreastpatchbutthefemalelooksverydifferentandisstreakedwithbrownandwhite.Thisisknownassexualdimorphism,whenthemaleandfemaleofthespecieslookdifferent.Themaleinparticularisknownforit’sbeautifulsong.YoufoundtheRose-breastedGrosbeak.Three–Thiscommonbirdisoftenusedasareferencepointforcomparingthesizeandshapeofotherbirdsasitisfamiliartomostpeople.Thefemalelaysbeautifulblueeggs.Bothparentsfeedtheyoung.InMinnesota,asmallpercentagestaythroughthewinterfeedingonberries.YoufoundtheAmericanRobin.Four–Femaleslookalotlikemales,buthaveagrayercapontheirheads.Theycansometimesbeseenperchingupsidedownorsidewaysontreetrunksastheyforageforfood.Thisbirdisknownforwedgingaseedintoacrackintreebarkandthenpeckingtheseedopen.Theydonotmigrateinthewinter.YoufoundtheWhite-breastedNuthatch.Five–Afewoftheseintelligentbirdswillsometimeseateggsandyoungbirdsfromthenestsofotherbirds.Thefeathersofthisbirddonothavebluepigment.Thecolorisfromrefracted(tochangethedirectionof)sunlight.Somestaythroughoutthewinteranddonotmigrate.Youcanfindthemfeedingatsuetfeedersinthewinter.YoufoundtheBlueJay.Six–Thefemaleandthemaleofthisspecieshavedifferentcoloringinthesummer,butinthewinterthemalechangescolortolooksimilartothefemale.Theyseemtoswoopupanddownastheyflythroughtheair.AtfeederstheyliketoeatNyjerThistleseed.YoufoundanonbreedingmaleAmericanGoldfinch.Seven–Thisbirdhasasmallredpatchonthebackofitsheadifitisamale,nopatchifitisafemale.Asitclingstoatreetolookforfood,itusesitstailtobraceitselfagainstthetrunk.Itpullsinsectsfromthecrackswithitslong,barbedtongue.ItlooksalmostidenticaltotheHairyWoodpeckerbuthasashorterbill.YoufoundtheDownyWoodpecker.Eight–Thesearestrikinglybeautifulbirds.Themaleandfemalehavedifferentcoloring.Theydon’tchangecolorinthewinterandtheirvibrantcolorsshowoffbeautifullyagainstawintersnow,inparticulartheredmale.Thephotoyouseeisofafemale.Bothmalesandfemalessing.YoufoundtheNorthernCardinal.
