A. The New Right• Rebirth of Conservatism: getting rid

of “government interference”.• Focused on bringing the U.S. back to

moral values.• “Moral Majority” – network of pastors

who believed in this• “The New Right” – people who believed

in these ideas.

• These groups combined to form the modern day Republican Party.

B. President Ronald ReaganElection of 1980:• A bad economy and unpopular

foreign policy made people turn away from President Carter.

• Elected Ronald Reagan (Republican) from California.• Former actor and governor of

California.• Wanted to “make America great again”.• Served from 1980-1988.

D. President Reagan• Economic approach:

Reaganomics.• Supply-side economics: cut taxes so

people will spend more money to support economy. Since businesses will be getting money, they will create more jobs for people.

• Also known as “trickle-down economics”: money from spending of wealthy people goes to down less wealthy.

• Cuts government spending to balance out the tax cuts.

D. President Reagan• Reaganomics effect:• Budget deficit increased

and increased the national debt.

• The economy did improve some.

• The economy got much better under Reagan, so people loved him.

in 1988.• Was Vice-President to Reagan and

Republican.

• Believed in Reaganomics, but raised taxes to try and get rid of the budget deficit.

• Caused some economic trouble, people became unhappy.
