Lydia stark The Lydia Stark Memorial Scholarship was

first awarded to Gilda Pena (Gonzalez) in the Fall of 1973. The scholarship was established in memory of their mother by the daughters of Dr. Larkin E. Stark and Lydia M. Stark, Mrs. Williams I. Latham and Mrs. R.E Fletcher.

She was the first speech therapist in the El Paso area and was a distinguished El Paso civic leader and teacher. She was quoted in a 1966 article of the El Paso Times as follows: “I believe the mind is like any other part of the body—to keep it healthy you must use it”.

Dr. Grace Middleton

Dr. Middleton was a faculty member at the University of Texas at El Paso for 28 years, serving for 18 months as program director of the speech-language pathology program. She and her co-authors published 4 books and over 20 articles. They regularly presented papers at local, state and national professional meetings over a span of 25 years. Dr. Middleton takes most pride, however, in celebrating the many professional and personal accomplishments of her former students.

Dr. Madeline BrandMadeline was the first EPSHA president for

the year 1962-1963. During her teaching career, Madeline was a faculty at both UTEP and NMSU. After years of university service she worked in the Gadsden ISD and the El Paso Community College. It was her desire to join El Paso and Las Cruces communities with a shared interest in promoting SLP student training.

At a lasting tribute to Madeline Brand’s contribution to the education of SLP’s, this scholarship has been established through the Texas Speech-Language Hearing Foundation.

The scholarship recipients alternate each year between UTEP and NMSU graduate level speech language pathology students.
