Researchers and students at the Institute forthe Wireless Internet of Things envision afuture in which people and their environmentare wirelessly connected by a continuum of AI-powered devices and networks, from driverlesscars and search-and-rescue drone swarms toimplantable medical devices and smart cities. The institute is home to world-leadingexpertise, facilities, and technologies dedicatedto making wireless communicationsexponentially faster, more energy efficient, andmore secure.
Our research priorities:
Our interdisciplinary expertise includes:
Colosseum is the world’s largest radiofrequency networked emulator
Originally developed to support DARPA’sCollaborative Spectrum Challenge (SC2) throughan investment of over $20M, Colosseum isavailable to industry, universities and others inthe research community. Colosseum@Northeastern is supported by a $6M grantfrom the National Science Foundation and ispart of the Platforms for Advanced WirelessResearch (PAWR) program. Colosseum provides the fidelity of hardwarechannel emulators, the flexibility of cloud-basedemulators, and the scale of network simulators. It can emulate wireless applications and signals(with granularity at the RF signal level) traversingspace and reflecting off multiple objects andobstacles as they travel from transmitters toreceivers. With over 65,000+ channels emulatedat the same time, Colosseum can create virtualworlds modeling radios operating in open fields, downtown, shopping mall, or a desert, bygenerating more than 52 terabytes of data persecond.
