April 2019 | Monthly Newsleer of Oak Ridge United Methodist Church I Love to Tell the Story Growing up we dyed Easter Eggs. Mom

would boil each of us (Susan, Brantley &

Mark) a dozen eggs to dye. A whole dozen!

Every Palm Sunday aernoon Mom would

boil the eggs and return them to the

cartoon to cool.

Mom would cover the kitchen table with

layers of newspaper, drop dye tablets into

coffee cups, add vinegar causing an

explosion of color, and finally let the three

of us have at it.

Wonderful – messy – beauful memories.

On Easter Sunday aernoon we would

travel to our grandparents where each

grandchild would bring their dozen

beaufully dyed eggs: 9 grands = 108 eggs

to hide and hunt!

As the uncles gathered the eggs to hide

them – one year – one of the eggs just

didn’t feel right. He shook it and wondered

if the egg was boiled or not. Aer throwing

in onto the road we all knew that egg was

never boiled!

The smell of roen egg on a hot paved

road is unmistakable. Every egg was then

inspected – and – one whole dozen eggs

had been dyed without ever being boiled.

It just so happened that those eggs

belonged to our family. My uncles and

aunts teased my Mom to high heaven. It

was a repeated story year aer year, the

year Mary forgot to boil the Easter Eggs.

I felt bad for Mom, having three kiddos

who just loved to “help” it is a wonder any

of the 36 eggs actually got boiled and dyed

and remained whole for a week, not to

menon traveling in a car for three hours.

But brothers just love to tease their sister

and tease they did for years to come.

Those eggs looked beauful! From the

outside you couldn’t tell the hard boiled

from the un-boiled. They looked beauful

on the outside but the inside held an

odiferous phew!

On Easter morning, Mary Magdalene and

the other women went to the tomb. Their

journey to the stone covered tomb was

grief filled for they knew what was on the

inside of the tomb – the body of their Lord.

The women knew once the stone was

rolled away they would be greeted by the

odiferous smell of decay – of death. Mary

and the women brought spices – spices to

anoint the body of Jesus – spices to mask

the odor of death.

But things were not as they expected. The

stone had already been rolled away and

the tomb was empty. Jesus’ body was not

there; the putrid smell of death was also

missing. This brought confusion and more

grief – since they assumed someone had

stolen the body of their Lord.

We know how the story ends – its a

marvelous, miraculous story of

resurrecon, one we tell over and over

each and every year!

The year that God the Father raised Jesus

the Son from the dead. The year that we

learned that death is not the end. The year

that we began to fathom the depth and

breadth of Jesus’ love for us. The year that

sin and death were defeated once and for

all. The year that the odiferous smell of

death was replaced by the wondrous

Breath of Life.

It's a story worth telling year aer

year aer year!

Joyfully,

Pastor Susan

MissionoftheMonth—Good Samaritan Ministries

Thank you for your generous support of Good Samaritan Ministries. This is a truly local mission, serving those who live within a 10 mile radius of the 10 member churches in Stokesdale and Oak Ridge. Boxes of food and articles of clothing are distributed each month to those who come to the center in Stokesdale. No one is turned away. Through your generosity, ORUMC provided 6612 pounds of food items, and over $2500 for emergency inancial assistance, in 2018. These are truly amazing totals. For 2019, there will be even more opportunities to participate and serve with GSM. How can you help?

Donatefood. Each month, we collect food items from our members, as noted in the bulletin. All you need to do is purchase the items when you do your grocery shopping, and drop them off in the bin provided to the right of the church ofice. This is a small act, but together we are providing food for over 100 families each month.

Helpdistributefoodandclothing. Saturday, March 30 (youth) and Saturday, November 23 (all) will be ORUMC's time to distribute food in 2019. Help is needed from 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. If you are interested in helping, please contact us.

Donatefunds. GSM provides emergency inancial assistance to people struggling to pay utilities and rent because of job loss, illness or other family emergencies. Your inancial support helps fund this service, and to help pay for additional food items as needed.

Helppackboxesoffood. Each month, on Monday evening prior to the fourth Saturday of each month, help is needed from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. to pack, and prepare the pantry space for that month's distribution. If you are interested in helping, please contact us.

Donateclothes. GSM also operates a Clothes

Closet at the same location. We need gentlyused clothing for all ages, infants to adults. Clothes can be dropped off on the third Saturday of each month from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., or the fourth Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m., or by appointment.

The pantry and clothes closet are located in the Stokesdale Business Center, 8500 Ellisboro Road, Stokesdale NC. The entrance to use is on the back of the building, next to the loading dock. Thank you all for your generous support and participation in this vital local mission! Spencer and Linda Sullivan GSM Ministry Leaders [email protected] 336-643-6993

Nurses’ Notes Is Vaping Safe? It Can Cause Higher Risk of Heart Attack, According to a New Study, March 4, 2019

There are many questions about vaping. Is it safe?

Does my teen do it? How does it affect my health?

While we have much left to learn about the safety of

e-cigarettes, new research shows that vaping can take

a serious toll on your heart by increasing your risk of

heart attack, heart disease, and stroke.

E-cigarettes (also called vape pens, electric smokers or

JUULs) are electronic devices that heat e-cigarette

liquids (also called juice, e-juice, vape juice or oil) into

a vapor that can be inhaled. Using an e-cigarette to

inhale the vapor is called “vaping,” and many people

who vape also use normal cigarettes.

In the new study, researchers found that people who

use both normal cigarettes and e-cigarettes have

multiple increased risks of heart-related

complications:

* 59% increased risk of chest pain or heart attack

* 40% increased risk of heart disease

*71% increased risk of stroke

There is also an increased risk of health complications

if you use e-cigarettes alone:

* Risk of heart attack increases by 25%

* Risk of stroke increases by 29%

Are E-Cigarettes a Safe Smoking Alternative? While

the debate about the safety of vaping is ongoing, this

new research shows that e-cigarette usage can

seriously damage your heart’s health. There are other

known health risks of using e-cigarettes:

Exposuretodangerouschemicalsine-cigarette

liquids. Many e-cigarette liquids have some of the

same ingredients found in normal cigarettes. These

ingredients include nicotine, volatile organic

compounds and chemicals that cause cancer. When

used in cigarettes, nicotine is known to constrict blood

vessels, which is especially harmful for people at risk

for heart health issues.

Healthrisksforteens.While this study focuses on

adults over 18, many e-cigarette users are teens. The

CDC states that around 1 in 5 high school students

reported they had used an e-cigarette within the past

month. E-cigarettes can cause multiple health issues

for teenagers:

The nicotine in e-cigarette liquids negatively impacts

teen brain development.

Teens can form an addiction to nicotine more easily

than adults.

Studies link vaping with the use of other tobacco-

based products, including normal cigarettes, in teens.

I’mQuittingSmokingforMyHeartHealth–Should

IUseE-CigarettestoHelpMe?It’s extremely

important to quit smoking, especially if you have heart

disease or are at risk of heart health issues. However,

opinions differ on whether e-cigarettes are safe to use

as a tool to help you quit.

If you have questions about how to quit smoking, the

irst step you should take is to reach out to your health

care provider. They can give you advice for quitting

based on your personal health needs. Additionally, the

American Heart Association recommends using tried-

and-true methods of quitting, such as quitting with the

help of a support group.

If you currently vape, consider quitting. Many health

care professionals recommend that people at higher

risk for heart issues should not vape to protect heart

health. If you have any questions or concerns,

remember that your provider is there to support you

every step of the way on your journey toward heart

health.

SignupforGuatemalaTeams-October2019The Guatemala Stove and Water Filter Ministry is a life changing ministry, not only for the people we serve but also for team members. We serve God by serving others. The primary goal of the ministry is growing God's Kingdom. Many of the people we serve are not Christian. This ministry establishes a connection between the families we serve and the local church. Many are led to a relationship with Christ as a result of that connection. Get up close and personal with some of the most humble and grateful people you will ever meet as we go into their homes and install their stoves. For a relatively small investment on our part, they go from life threatening air and water, to clear air and puriied drinking water.

Please be a part of this amazing ministry. The team dates are; October 12-19, October 19-26 and October 26-November 2. Thedeadlineforyourapplicationand$600depositisMay20.I urge you to contact me now to reserve your spot on a team. Mari and her 11-year-old daughter served on a team in 2018. Please take time to read their testimonials.

“My experience in Guatemala was highly ancipated and nerve racking at the same me. This was my first service mission ever and to leave the states was not only excing, but a lile scary, too. The process and support provided to make this mission happen for me was prey flawless and very organized. The people we worked with were absolutely wonderful and in great spirits to help others. Arriving in Guatemala and becoming accustomed to their culture and way of life was overwhelming, but throughout the week you tend to create a habit of the new rounes and it gets a lile easier each day. The people we helped were by far the best part of this mission experience. They are the most welcoming, loving and gracious people I have ever met. To serve those families was more of a blessing to me than it was to them, though they may not realize that. The living condions and daily struggles they encounter just to survive are beyond eye opening and it doesn’t

take much to compare everything we have to what they have, and know how much help is needed out there beyond what we see. All it takes is loving disciples who are willing and able to take the journey and make a difference. Installing stoves and providing other services to improve these families’ homes and health overall is an incredible mission project that I know will serve its purpose and I am so glad I was able to be a part of it. I would recommend anyone who has an opportunity and an open heart to do this in the future, please do! It would be well worth it and make such a posive impact on you, those you are helping, and your faith. The relaonships you build and memories you make with everyone involved remain with you forever. God bless this service mission and may it connue to grow in numbers and financial strength to keep going!”

Guatemala (cont.)

“In October, I got the opportunity to go to Guatemala. At first, I was a lile anxious to go but as soon as we stepped into the airport, I was super excited to be there. I didn’t know what was in store for us but when we landed, I knew I was ready for it. When I stepped outside of the airport, it was a whole new world. It was upseng to see what their lifestyle was like. I wanted to help them as soon as I saw someone in need. As I looked at their homes and their clothes, I realized how much I have. We take so many things for granted and we need to appreciate what we have. A couple days aer, we started our work. Every house we went to the people in the homes welcomed us with open arms; it was all about teamwork. We worked together to build stoves and installed water filters in their homes. Aer each day, families came from all over the town to get bundles for their family. The bundles included toothbrushes and toothpaste, clothes and shoes (for all ages), vitamins and hygiene items. When you saw their faces of joy and hope, your face just lit up and you wanted to help even more than you did before. The journey was unexplainable and was a life-changing opportunity. I highly recommend anyone who has the chance to go, to go. It will change your life forever. It makes you have a different outlook on life. It made me realize that these people do have hope and that God is always there for them and always loves them. This has been an overall amazing experience and I would most definitely go back again. No maer how big or small, weak or strong, old or young, you can do it and help make an impact in helping to change the world! God bless!”

The ORUMC Prayer ministry is delighted that you have chosen to

walk and pray during these 40 days of Lent and hope this will lead

you to continue daily conversation with our God.

When Pastor Andy came to our church, he requested that each staff member have a prayer partner to pray with them once a month as they lead our congregation. We have several new people serving and we know they will love having someone pray with and for them. If you’re interested, please let us know.

Also, the prayer ministry would like to ind two teams of people to come to the sanctuary to pray weekly for our congregation, Oak Ridge, the world, and our country. The only requirement is conidentiality as we pray for speciic needs. This prayer time will also be a time of thanks for all the good and wonderful moments God gives us daily. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please contact Suzanne Pollock at [email protected].

Thank you, dear ORUMC family, for your prayers, presence, cards, calls, texts, food, and unending support

and love. Your care and grace began last year in all of those ways—as my parents’ needs often called upon

me; as my appendix gave up the ight; as the year kept winding and twisting up my schedule…and my heart.

Your compassion and love have only deepened as this year quickly made last year feel like a holiday to me.

Throughout Daddy’s three hospital stays (after the car event that bruised his rib and lung) the last ive

weeks of his life and since his passing on February 28 (and during Mother’s trials as dementia keeps

stealing more of her brain), you all—and my belonging here at ORUMC—have been and are a constant to

me. Even in my absence the past two months, you are so present, and I’m still able to inhale and hope

because of God and you. During the past 12 months you have fed my family (my parents, Scott, Daken) and

me, literally, emotionally, spiritually. What a blessing you have been and are to each of us. Thank you for

allowing me to be not only a staff member, but moreover a friend and full-ledged part of this precious

family.

All my love, Emily-Sarah Lineback

Weekday School News

We are excited for spring at the Weekday

School. As mentioned in last month’s

Ridgerunner article, we have upgraded our big

playground. The children are having a blast

playing on the new equipment. We also

celebrated the completion of our infant

playground with a ribbon cutting ceremony on

March, 21st. We are so blessed to have a safe

space for our babies to play outside.

Spring also means new life. Every year we

purchase caterpillars for all of the classrooms

to watch the life cycle of a butterly from

beginning to end. Our caterpillars will arrive the

irst week of April so if you are in any of the

Weekday School classrooms be sure to check

them out.

We are always accepting donations at the

Weekday School. If you have any outside toys—

riding toys, cozy coupes, balls, games, etc., please

bring them to the Weekday School ofice. We

always love gently used books, matchbox cars,

and dress-up clothes as well.

In Christ,

Jamie Hatchell

Greensboro Urban Ministries Special Wednesdays

On Wednesdays, after my shift at the jail, I drive

over to Urban Ministries (GUM), back into a

parking spot in the rear of GUM, sit in the car and

watch the people come and go. If I don’t bring

lunch, I’ll go into Potter's House (serves 500+/

day); the staff shows me where to sit, then my table

-mates and I interact as we are led. After lunch, 10

minutes before our midday service, I take the short

walk next door to Weaver House (GUM’s dorm); a

diverse group of people await our midday service.

I greet everyone who makes eye contact, many I

know. I hit the buzzer, give Cheri a smile and she

buzzes me in. Andre is in the Chapel practicing our

hymns on the piano. He’s one of our Stephen

Leaders; I've known him since 2001, when I

trained for Stephen Ministry (SM) at GUM. Our

company’s ofice was nearby then; so, this special,

daily service allowed me the time for regular client

care. Each of my irst 10 years as a SM, I attended

more than 200 services. Of those attending

yesterday, most all I knew, and two I had not seen

in more than three years: One shared her need for

housing, and the other still worries about her son

James in NYC. His life risks a return to prison,

while he and his wife expect their irst child in July

(James); please pray for them. Before the service

we greet each other; then, after the service, we hug

and catch up as appropriate. Each of these familiar

people holds a special context for me.

We start with three hymns of the church from our

Baptist hymnal; we have a prayer, and then a

devotional (lasts 30-40 minutes). Whenever I'm

blessed to conduct the service, it's the highlight of

my week. From a distance, we may imagine one of

our participants at an intersection holding up a

sign. But, during the span of one hour; having

lunch, listening to and worshiping with God’s

children, I can FEEL the love among my brothers

and sisters. They are not a stereotype. In this

context, I've had a prayer on my heart the last few

days: Recently, a big part of the Muslim

community in New Zealand was brutally attacked.

Yet, there was an amazing outpouring of Love from

Christians into the Muslim community for food,

comfort, and many other needs. Their walls of

isolation were torn down, and I pray there will be

an INTENSE awareness on both sides, of the

similarities between 'us' and 'them' in a horriic

time like this. Also, I pray this will permanently

draw these communities into a place where their

differences will seem to disappear. Praise God!
