Mooting competitionsas the australian round of the International law Moot Court competition, the Jessup Moot is the oldest, most prestigious, and globally extensive of all international law student competitions.

For anu College of law students, Jessup Moot is a summer session elective. students are expected to prepare the written memorials and participate in the internal anu practice moots. the team then participates in the australian rounds of the Jessup Moot competition and, if the team reaches the final of the australian rounds, competes in the International Rounds in the united states.

the anu College of law Jessup Moot team won the international competition in 2010.

> ilsa.org/jessup

you also have the opportunity to compete in other international moots, such as the Jean-Pictet International Humanitarian Law Moot, the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Competition, the Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition, the Oxford International Intellectual Property Mooting Competition, the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, the Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, and the International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot Competition.

Clinical coursesClinical courses give you the opportunity to engage with real clients, problems and deadlines. Our programs provide an ideal opportunity to balance theory with practice, and include:

> Clinical Youth Law Program Based in a community legal practice environment, this course is delivered in collaboration with aCt legal aid, which manages the youth law Centre aCt, and provides legal advice to people aged between 12 and 25.

> Community Law Clinical Program during this course, students work for two days a week at the welfare Rights and legal Centre where they provide legal information and undertake casework under the supervision of solicitors.

> International Social Justice Clinic In partnership with nGOs in australia, the Pacific and asia, this course provides students with the opportunity to work on a range of social justice programs. unlike other clinical courses at anu, where students often work with local people on local legal issues, students in the International social Justice Clinic work with an nGO as their client, addressing current issues of human rights practice and policy. students based in Canberra work with the staff of an interstate or overseas nGO through online communication.

CHAT (Mentoring program)at the anu College of law we value collegiality. when you become a student in our College we want you to be a part of that collegiality and to feel that you are known and supported as an individual student. Critical to this is forming relationships with staff and other students.

Chat (Come and have a talk) is a mentoring scheme that teams you up in groups with other first year students, two later year student mentors and one staff member. we encourage all first year law students to participate.

Once enrolled in a group, student mentors will contact your group to discuss a social get-together and answer any questions and issues that arise from starting your time as a law student. Mentors will be available to refer students to appropriate sources of support, to give advice and to assist with any academic or study related matters. there will also be Chat social gatherings, coffee sessions and discussion sessions.

InternshipsOur law internship offers selected high achieving students an unparalleled opportunity to carry out a law-based research project in a legal professional workplace. this elective course develops both legal knowledge and a lawyer’s approach to problem identification, analysis and recommendations. the internship work may be set in a government department, law firm, parliament, or non-government organisation. there are increasing opportunities for overseas internships.

English in a legal context (ELC)ElC is a free non-curriculum course offered by the College. the aim of this course is to assist first year law students, who have English as a second language, to address and overcome any issues or problems they are experiencing with their legal studies as a result of their lack of English language background.

the course takes material from subject areas to which students are exposed in their first year of law studies (Foundations of australian law, torts, lawyers Justice and Ethics and Contracts) and creates activities designed both to help students to develop a cultural context for their legal studies and to acquire the practical legal skills they will need for their future study and practice. the following is an example of the kinds of issues that are addressed and skills that are practised:

> how to read cases

> how to write case notes

> techniques to simplify legal writing

> how to speed up reading of cases and other material

> preparing for tutorial problems

> participating effectively in discussion groups.

When I graduated from high school, my goal was to find a university whose degree is recognised and appreciated worldwide.

A degree from ANU is highly regarded internationally.

the anu College of law offers students a variety of opportunities to study and experience law’s potential for reform, and for achieving social justice.we offer critical perspectives in our teaching: analysing law’s successes – and inadequacies – in controlling power, allocating resources, sustaining livelihoods, protecting the environment, promoting equality, resolving disputes and ensuring fair process. In particular, these issues are explored through assessment options which address current issues of law reform, and in elective courses such as:

> animals and the law

> Climate law

> Clinical courses

> Consumer protection law

> Criminal justice

> Environmental law

> Feminist and critical legal theory

> health law

> human rights law

> labour law

> law and sexualities

> law and society in south East asia

> law reform

> lawyers justice & ethics

> legal theory

> Refugee law

we complement the classroom teaching in a number of ways, partnering with organisations such as the youth law Centre, the welfare Rights and legal Centre, Migrant and Refugee settlement services, and the aCt human Rights Commission.

Our clinical courses enable students to work in community legal services and non-government organisations while learning about law in society, access to justice, and legal issues relating to, for example, youth, families, migrants and refugees and welfare recipients.

Our internships give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in experiencing and researching particular social justice issues, from the united nations in Geneva to native title representative bodies in Cape york, as well as with social justice and human rights organisations in australia’s capital.

with our Law Reform and Social Justice initiatives, social justice projects are designed and run by law students. students engage with the local community, identifying legal need and developing appropriate responses.

anu College of law students are working with, for example, prisoners, older people, migrants and refugees, social housing tenants and young people, to help them understand and cope with the laws that affects them.

Our social justice events bring a wide range of experts and experience into the anu College of law, to create debate and offer direction to students who want to know about the full range of career options that a law degree offers. the law Reform and social Justice Program shows films, conducts seminars and presents guest speakers regularly throughout the year.
