when we expose someone to a wrIter lIke updIke, we help make denver a much more InterestIng place.
For the Denver Public library, 2008 was a year oF accomPlishments, anD also challenges.
The Democratic National Convention was a
highlight of the year, with meetings and events
happening at Library locations. Our display of
historic artifacts from Denver’s 1908 convention
drew hundreds of first-time visitors to Central.
2008 also brought the beginning of the current
economic downturn. Customers came to us
in unprecedented numbers, seeking assistance
in the job market, bringing their children to
storytimes and programs, and logging on to
computers. Many customers rediscovered
the Library while others stepped foot in our
doors for the first time ever to check out books,
CDs, and DVDs, get resume advice, or attend
classes, all without spending a dime.

In tough economic times, our customers need

When the librarian’s away, the books will
play! 2008 Booklovers’ Ball guests came
face to face with their favorite fictional
characters including Scarlett O’Hara,
Tom Sawyer, Dorothy Gale and Othello.
The eco-friendly event—without speeches,
auctions or envelopes—was a fantastic
evening of cocktails, dinner and dancing
at the Central Library.
Proceeds from the Ball help purchase
books and materials for students of all
ages. When you support our fundraising
events, you support the Library.

eviL CoMpAnions
The Evil Companions Literary Award is presented annually
to a poet or writer who embodies the spirit of Denver’s
original Evil Companions, a group of Denver writers who
met in the ‘50s and ‘60s to drink and discuss writing
and the world. Jorie Graham was the recipient of the
2008 Evil Companions Literary Award.
Proceeds from this event benefit DPL.

Book and art aficionados gathered at the Central Library
for an evening of fun, food and bidding on treasures.
Proceeds from the Auction were dedicated to the
Western History Book Conservation Fund, which allows
the Library to maintain our unparalleled collection
of Western History books, manuscripts, and photos.
33rd AnnuAL used book sALe Each year, thousands flock to the Central Library in
search of bargain books, DVDs, CDs, and books-on-tape.
Proceeds from the sale benefit the Library’s Books and
Materials Fund.
