The windows of t he f i r s t f l o o r have c l a s s i c a l pedi- mented head surrounds, f l a t s ide surrounds and louvered shu t te rs . The windows a r e double hung and have a pa t te rn of 2 x 2 l i gh t s . The double main entrance doors have upper l i g h t s with segmental heads, and a transom above.

I The house i s wood frame construction with hor izonta l beveled s iding and corner boards. There i s a broad porch extending across t he f r o n t (nor th) facade. Its roof is f l a t , forming a deck w i t h an ornamental i r o n r a i l i n g a t the second level . The porch cornice i s decorated w i t h a row of t r i angu la r den t i l - l i ke blocks. It i s supported by sc ro l led consoles from the f r i e z e board. The f r i e z e i s decorated with a d e l i c a t e scroll-work band between consoles. The second s t o r y i s within a b e l l c a s t mansard form w i t h h i p cap. The mansard i s c lad i n diamond shape wood t i l e s i n t h e Victorian fashion. The windows i n the man- sard l e v e l have decorated, pedimented head surrounds and decorated s i d e surrounds t h a t curve from narrow a t t he head t o q u i t e wide a t t he sill. The windows a r e double hung with a p a t t e r n of 2 x 2 l i gh t s .

The s ign i f i cance of t h e Hudson-Grace-Borreson house l ies i n i t s d e l i g h t f u l mixture of Greek Revival, Vic to r ian and New Orleans French q u a l i t i e s .

It i s i n t e r e s t i n g t o note t h a t although Pine Bluff owes much,to her French f ami l i e s of t h e 19th Century such a s t h e Vaugines, t h e Barraques and the Fourches, t h e only ex t an t a r c h i t e c t u r a l example of t h a t in f luence was b u i l t by a Kentuckian, W. P. Grace.

Grace had been i n New Orleans during t h e C i v i l War and h i s home r e f l e c t e d . h i s admiration. of t he French a rch i t ec - t u r e there .

The p reva i l ing a r c h i t e c t u r a l s t y l e i n Pine Bluff i n t h e e a r l y mid 19th Century was Greek Revival, l a t e r developing i n t o t h e Victorian of t h e l a t e 19th Century. The Hudson- Grace-Borreson house r e f l e c t s t r a n s i t i o n a l f e a t u r e s of both these s t y l e s i n add i t ion t o t h e s t rong New Orleans French q u a l i t i e s which g ive it i t s unique character . This would i n d i c a t e t h a t while t h e love. of French Arch i tec tu re was s t rong with Grace, he a l s o respected t he l o c a l t rends .

William P. Grace was an a t to rney i n Pine Bluf f , Arkansas. He was born i n Caldwell County, Kentucky on November 2 2 , : 1822. Grace's f a t h e r was a b r ick layer and young Grace worked f o r him, a s a b r i ck l aye r , u n t i l he was twenty-two years of age. A t t h a t t i m e he attempted t o secure an educat ion and at tended Cumberland College, a t Princeton, Kentucky f o r one year. Af te r h i s year a t co l l ege he read law wi th a Kentucky lawyer and was admitted t o t h e b a r i n 1847. H e lef t Kentucky and went t o F lo r ida t o e s t a b l i s h a l a w p rac t i ce . H e was not s a t i s f i e d i n F lo r ida and l e f t t h a t s t a t e t o come t o Arkansas. H e s e t t l e d a t Pine Bluff where he e s t ab l i shed a law p r a c t i c e pa r tne rsh ip with Robert E. Waters.

Grace was e lec ted t o Pine Bluf f ' s f irst C i ty Council, and i n 1852 was e l e c t e d p r o s e c u t i n g a t torney. H e was a Douglas Democrat i n 1860. , I

The e l ec t i on of Lincoln t o t h e Presidency r e s u l t e d I i n t h e secession ques t ion being r a i s ed again f o r t h e f i rs t t i m e s ince t h e Jackson Administration. The S t a t e of Arkansas c a l l e d f o r a Secession Convention t o be held a t L i t t l e Rock. William P. Grace and James

I Y e l l were Pine Bluff de lega tes t o t h a t Convention. The , Arkansas Secession Convention and Lincoln ' s inaugurat ion were held on t h e same day. Grace was chosen Chairman of t h e Ordinance Committee of t h e Secession Convention,

s ion which took Arkansas from t h e Union.

In 1861 Grace was appointed Commissary o f t h e M i l i - t a r y S t a f f of Arkansas. H e served through one b a t t l e (Oak H i l l ) before ill h e a l t h forced him t o l eave t h e army. H e returned t o Pine Bluff t o resume h i s law prac t ice . Before h i s death i n 1898 Colonel Grace be- came known as one of t h e bes t cr iminal lawyers i n the Sta te . H e l o s t only one c l i e n t t o t h e hangman ou t of some f i f t y cases of t h i s type.
