CENTERVILLE MESSENGER (096380) Free Upon Request-Published Weekly by Centerville Church of Christ, 138 N. Central Ave., Centerville, TN 37033-1427 August 3, 2016 Volume XXXVI - Number 31 “I Hope You Know” Why would you want to bring a child into this world? We’re not the first generation to ask this question. In the midst of some of the darkest and most immoral times of Israel, when corruption was rampant from the priesthood to the people, it is fitting that a ray of hope would shine through the prayer of a devoted mother. From the heart of a woman whose name means grace you see her sacrifice from the beginning. “The prayer of the upright is God’s delight” (Proverbs 15:8) and in this moment there may be none more upright than Hannah. In the first ten verses of I Samuel 2, her prayer is a message of salvation, in the Lord one should rejoice because of His power to save (vs. 1). She extols the supply of her Lord, “the One who breaks the bows of mighty men, and strengthens those who stumble…the barren born many, and she who has many children has become feeble” (vs. 4), it’s clear our God is a God who answers the calls of those who feel weak and helpless, and it’s the Hannah’s of scripture who reinforce the inspiration of Paul, “My strength is made perfect in weakness, for when I am weak then I am strong” (II Corinthians 12:9). Hannah declares the sovereignty of God, “the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s…His adversaries are broken and the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.” Our God is a sovereign God, a lesson mankind, our culture, and even the church would do well to remember today. When you read Hannah’s prayer, you read the prayer of a blessed woman (I Samuel 2:1-10). But when this great book opens and we meet Hannah, she believes she is anything but blessed. She’s broken. Hannah’s prayer is viewed with exceptional regard among the Jewish people. Some scholars count the contents of her words as an anthem found throughout Samuel’s writing. Others see Hannah’s prayer as a foundation for Mary’s song in Luke 1. Still others recite this prayer as part of daily ritual Jewish prayers. Hannah speaks of God’s consecration, His concern, His comfort, His conquering, and ultimately His coming king. But it’s her prayer before the prayer which gives us the best insight into the journey of her heart. If we are to be a people whose sight has been replaced with faith, our best lesson comes from a woman who saw her potential in her posterity. By faith Hannah believed in a God who offered salvation and was a uniquely holy God. She also believed that in asking of her God this one request, He was beyond capable of fulfilling her petition. “Talk no more so very proudly” she would say to those who thought they knew all the answers. “Let no arrogance come from your mouth” she would say, for she knew man could only spew falsehoods. “For the Lord is the God of knowledge” she would say, and she would be right. Hannah knew what it was like to have naysayers, and their words could cut deeply to the heart, but by faith Hannah knew God was the God of knowledge and He knew ultimately what would become of Hannah. How many mothers have prayed for their children? How many mothers have shared their faith and shaped the faith of their children, allowing them to do great things for their God? To borrow a stanza from a song, “Hannah, did you know your baby boy would hear the voice of God?” Did you know he would feel rejected, that he would anoint the kings of God, that he would remind a nation, rebuke a rebellious king, and finally rest with his fathers? Hannah knew her God would “guard the feet of His saints…every adversary shall be broken in pieces.” Hannah knew her son’s God, that’s all she needed, that’s all any son has ever needed. I hope you know, knowing the God of Hannah and serving Him, is all we’ll ever need too.

“I Hope You Know”

Why would you want to bring a child into this world? We’re not the first generation to ask this question. In the midst of some of the darkest and most immoral times of Israel, when corruption was rampant from the priesthood to the people, it is fitting that a ray of hope would shine through the prayer of a devoted mother. IT IS ALWAYS A BLESSING TO BE WITH THE COBLE CHURCH… All of our young men did fantastic jobs in their leading. There were also so encouraged by all our young ladies and the many others who joined us. All together over 100 were present to worship together. An excellent lesson on the “Armor of God” was taught by John Jacobs. Jake Martin and Grady Teet led some beautiful prayers. Luke Brown, Connor McAlister, Colby Shelton, and Luke Worsham led our singing, Riley Qualls read scripture and Griffin Elkins and Braden Parsons presided at the Lord’s Supper. We return to Coble on October 31. Between now and then our young men continue to lead the Mid-Week Devotional service here at Centerville. We appreciate their hard work and preparations as well as all the examples our young people set for others. TWO SUPER MEETINGS TO

START THE SCHOOL YEAR… Our first meeting with the 20/30 Deacons and the Youth Deacons was very beneficial as we looked at some ideas, plans, and dreams for this year as well as the coming years. I am so excited for the support and excitement these men and their families have for the youth of this congregation. The excitement continued into the Youth, Parent, and Volunteer meeting. Thanks to all who came to help plan and to look at what the rest of 2016 will hold. THERE ARE A FEW SPOTS LEFT IN HOSTING.. We have one Junior High host needed for a Fireside in November. We have both August Lighthouses needing hosts and we have several Prayer Breakfast open to host. Thanks to all those who help out to host and for

everything else you do for us! I CANNOT BELIEVE SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION! It just seems like we were having Senior Sunday and preparing for a packed Summer. Now we glance at our monthly activities easing back into full swing as we look for an exciting Fall seeking the lost and encouraging the faithful. Look for ways you can be involved this year like never before. Seek ways to invite and encourage others to join us. We will have many monthly activities along with our worship services and classes all with the emphasis not to just have something to do, but to help keep your focus, to grow your knowledge, and to sharpen one another as Christians. Lord willing, I look forward to another wonderful school year that brings many souls to know the One who sacrificed it all for us. Keep sharpening and...

FROM THE HILL...What a

summer! It’s been a great summer on the hill. Beginning with our own summer camp in June and finishing on July 31, lots of people have been able to e x p e r i e n c e t h e c a m p experience. Now I’ll have a chance to slow down and listen for the sounds of a crying baby. I’m excited for this new adventure. There will be a family night at Camp on August 27 beginning at 4 that afternoon. We will play for a few hours, eat a little and then watch a movie on the front

lawn. I would love to see you there. In September or October there will be a trail clean-up day to give some much needed attention to the trails. Thank you to Greg and Karen McCord for their donation of a new vol leybal l net for Mackendox. Also, thanks to all of you for your continued support of Camp. Camp is a special place for many because of your help. Derek Newsom Camp Meribah Superintendent
