2010 CROSSROADS ANNUAL REPORT
METHODIST HEALTH SYSTEM FOUNDATION
I give.
“ ...be the epistle of Christ ministered by us,
written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God... ”
ABOUT METHODIST HEALTH SYSTEM
Guided by the founding principles of life, learning, and compassion, Methodist Health System
(Methodist) provides quality, integrated care to improve and save the lives of individuals and
families throughout North Texas. Methodist Dallas Medical Center, Methodist Charlton Medical
Center, Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, Methodist Richardson Medical Center, Methodist
Midlothian Health Center, and Methodist Family Health Centers are part of the not-for-profit
Methodist Health System, which is affiliated by covenant with the North Texas Conference of
The United Methodist Church.
Letter from the Foundation
As we present the Foundation’s annual report each year, it is gratifying to realize
how much Methodist Health System is valued in the communities we serve. We
are also humbled knowing the greatest expression of faith and commitment to the
community is written not in the generous gifts to the Foundation, but rather in the
deep compassion written on the hearts of supporters who give at every level so
that life may shine bright for all who come to Methodist Health System for care.
The gifts we have received to support
Methodist’s mission of quality health
care and teaching represent an array of
community interests and a shared vision
of the future of Methodist Health System.
The historic $20 million gift from
Sammons Dallas Foundation is focused on
ensuring lifesaving emergency and trauma
services are available in time of critical
need and will also provide support for
indigent care. March of Dimes and other
foundations have given generously to the
Life Shines Bright Pregnancy Program to
help prevent preterm births and give every
child a healthy start in life. Dallas Cowboy
Bradie James Foundation 56 has reached
out to give Methodist breast cancer
patients a comprehensive resource center
to support their care and recovery needs.
Private donors have expressed their
compassionate understanding of the
needs in their communities through
their generosity as well. Gifts supporting
Golden Cross programs and Golden Cross
Academic Clinic services are benefiting
families and individuals who otherwise
cannot afford health care. Ongoing support
from community volunteer organizations
is equipping Methodist hospitals with the
sophisticated technologies necessary
to provide leading-edge health care for
cardiology and surgical patients.
Gifts this year have also been dedicated
to sustaining Methodist’s excellence
in patient care through staff training
and education. Major donations are
supporting teaching fellowships to train
new gastroenterology and nephrology
physicians, clinical education for internal
medicine physicians, and educational
opportunities to address the need for
more registered nursing staff.
Why people choose to give to
Methodist Health System may be unique
to their individual experience or collective
mission. The common theme is the
difference every gift makes in the lives
of the patients Methodist serves. The
Methodist Health System Foundation is
deeply appreciative of your continuing
friendship and support.
We are honored to serve the
Foundation in guiding our hospitals and
health centers to express the heart and
vision of our supporters so that Methodist
Health System continues to be a place
where life shines bright. Thank you.

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Charles
A. Sammons lived by the passage “to whom
much is given, of him shall much be required.”
What a difference his extraordinary generosity
will make in people’s lives through Methodist
Health System and five other beneficiaries of his
charitable legacy.
In January 2010, Methodist Health System
Foundation received the largest single gift
in Methodist’s history. Made possible by the
estate of Charles A. Sammons and the 3,800
women and men of Sammons Enterprises,
Inc., the $20 million gift from Sammons Dallas
Foundation honors Mr. Sammons’ conviction
that the worth of a company should be based
on its contribution to the community as well as
its profits.
Mr. Sammons named Methodist Health
System Foundation as one of six specially
selected beneficiaries before his death in 1988.
He had a special interest in health care as an
owner of health and life insurance companies.
As a successful entrepreneur, Mr. Sammons
quietly offered a hand up to people in need in
the least served areas of Dallas.
To commemorate Mr. Sammons’ devotion
to the community, the Foundation has dedicated
$15 million to establish the Charles and Elaine
Sammons Endowment Fund. Growth from the
fund will continue to improve patient care and
save lives by supporting medical education,
indigent care, and emergency room trauma
services. The remaining $5 million will be used
to seed a matching gift campaign to expand
Methodist’s emergency services and trauma
care facilities.
“With economic times increasing the strain
on emergency rooms for nonemergency care,
the expansion of Methodist’s emergency and
trauma services is important to the community,”
said Heather Kreager, president of Sammons
Dallas Foundation and Sammons Enterprises,
Inc. “We are pleased a portion of the gift will
be used for the matching grant challenge. Mr.
Sammons always liked a good challenge. He
wanted to support efforts that were important
to a large portion of the community. We
hope the challenge grant will encourage and
motivate other individuals and companies in the
community to support Methodist and take a role
in completing the project.”

Emergency Medicine
PLANNING FOR EMERGENCIES
The Gift of Lifesaving Care
The Sammons Foundation Gif t
“Because of the nationwide shortage of
primary care physicians, people seek access
to primary care in the emergency department.
We see roughly 60,000 patients annually,
and we have about 20 beds in the hallway
because there is no other place to put them.
We are in desperate need of funds to ensure
the continuation of a functional ER that ensures
patient privacy,” said Robert Simonson, DO, an
emergency medicine physician on the medical
staff at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
Methodist Dallas Medical Center’s level
II trauma center and emergency services
department provides care to a growing number
of patients. A busy and vitally needed referral
center for emergency and trauma care, the
hospital is also a primary scene response
provider for CareFlite and receives patients
from a 150-mile radius in North and East Texas,
including about 1,800 trauma victims annually
who are rushed directly from the scene.
While working to speed care to critical
patients within the “golden hour,” the first 60
minutes after a heart attack, stroke, or injury
when the chances of survival are greatest, the
emergency department staff also cares for a
multitude of noncritical patients who depend
on Methodist’s emergency services for their
medical needs.
A historic $20 million gift received from
the Sammons Dallas Foundation is a significant
milestone in the Foundation’s effort to fund
the renovation and expansion of the Norman
Brinker Emergency and Trauma Services
department. The improvements will increase
Methodist’s capacity for emergency services
and trauma care, as well as provide a new
urgent care center for noncritical patients to
receive the appropriate care. The modifications
are essential to enable the emergency and
trauma department to focus on the delivery of
lifesaving care to critical patients.
“Having a specific area of the emergency
department dedicated to the resuscitation of
trauma victims and equipped with the unique
resources necessary will greatly enhance
the department’s ability to care for trauma
patients,” said Dr. Simonson. He added, “So is a
space dedicated for urgent care. Having limited
space results in mixing primary care patients in
with those needing critical care – a situation
which leaves patients frustrated. The urgent
care center answers how we can see a large
volume of patients with primary care issues in
a timely manner.”
Methodist Health System serves the
most diverse and vulnerable populations in
Dallas, providing more than $90 million in
unreimbursed charity care annually. Sammons’
generosity will also aid Methodist in continuing
our mission of providing indigent care for those
at the greatest disadvantage in our community.
Supporters interested in making a lifesaving
gift for emergency and trauma services at
Methodist Dallas Medical Center, contact
the Methodist Health System Foundation at

GI and Nephrology Fellowship Programs
Each year, up to $400,000 in earnings from the Charles and Elaine Sammons Endowment Fund will
support gastroenterology and nephrology fellowship programs at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
In addition to training gastroenterology and nephrology specialists, the new fellowship programs will
support the development of clinical trials with specific patient protocols that will significantly augment
the practice of gastrointestinal medicine at Methodist Health System.

2010 Crossroads Annual Report 7
The Golden Cross Academic Clinic’s Life
Shines Bright Pregnancy Program, still in its
infancy after the launch of the pilot program in
2008, grew in 2009 to give 132 young mothers
and their babies a healthier start.
The program’s early success in preventing
preterm births is remarkable. In the pilot year, 77
of the 79 young women enrolled in the program
delivered full-term, lowering our preterm
birthrate to 3.5 percent from 18 percent.
Forty-four percent of the new mothers were
teenagers, one of the highest risk groups for
preterm births.
The importance of the Life Shines Bright
Pregnancy Program to the community cannot
be understated. The preterm birthrate in the
service area of Methodist Dallas Medical Center
and the Golden Cross Academic Clinic, ranging
from 12 to 23 percent, is significantly higher
than the average preterm birthrate for Dallas
County (12%), Texas (13.3%), and the nation
(12.3%). Preterm and low-birth-weight infants
are at much greater risk of dying before their
first birthday. Those who do survive are at an
increased risk for lasting medical complications,
as well as learning and behavioral problems.
“March of Dimes’ goal is to prevent
prematurity, birth defects, and infant mortality
and give every baby a healthy start in life. Our
Centering Pregnancy® program is a holistic
approach to pregnancy. It actually teaches
parents how to parent. That’s huge,” said Julie
Whitsitt, executive director, Dallas Division
March of Dimes.
Supported by March of Dimes and using
their innovative Centering Pregnancy model,
Life Shines Bright provides complete prenatal
care to women within a dynamic learning and
sharing group setting. First-time mothers-
to-be gain knowledge and confidence about
pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting; build a
supportive community with other women; and
receive basic prenatal checkups.
The program has also received generous
support from CITI through March of Dimes,
the E.V. Brown Memorial Golf Tournament,
Junior League of Dallas, The J.E. and L.E. Mabee
Foundation, The Summerfield G. Roberts
Foundation, and W.P. and Bulah Luse Foundation.
The gifts reflect the community’s commitment
to improving facilities and expanding capacity
for the Life Shines Bright Pregnancy Program to
prevent preterm births.
Renovations within the Golden Cross
Academic Clinic will increase the physical
space for the program to accommodate
additional staff, patients, and group activities.
Changes include a homelike meeting space
with audiovisual teaching capabilities designed
to make patients feel comfortable and
encourage participation.
After completion of the renovations, the
program will expand the number of women
served by Life Shines Bright to 1,200 annually,
and it will save more than $1.2 million in medical
costs associated with care provided in the NICU
for preterm babies.

Shines Bright Pregnancy Program, please call

Amanda Fernandez, 23, feels
“so, so happy” with the bonding
experience she is sharing with her
firstborn child, a healthy, full-term
boy born March 14, 2010.
“You find out so many things
that surprise you,” she said, talking
about the Life Shines Bright
Pregnancy Program classes she
attended prior to Nathan’s birth.
“They give you more details about
everything you’ll go through. You
learn how to treat your baby. A lot of
girls, especially the teenagers that
don’t have help from their families,
would not be able to do this on their
own. I’m able to bond with Nathan
better. I really do appreciate it.”
In addition to benefiting little
Nathan, Amanda is also sharing
her new parenting skills with her
sisters, effectively spreading the
reach of Life Shines Bright into the
community. A younger sister who
also recently gave birth went to a
few classes with Amanda and joined
the program, and an older sister has
started using some of the child-
care routines Amanda has learned
and passed on to her.
The success of the Golden Cross
Academic Clinic’s Life Shines Bright
Pregnancy Program is helping more
young women like Amanda receive
important prenatal care and learn
how to be confident, attentive
mothers giving their babies the best
start in life possible.

Why I give.
To further the mission of Methodist’s
digestive health services, Mr. and Mrs. Ford
made a three-year $300,000 pledge to
establish The Nita and John Ford Charitable
Fund for Digestive Health. The fund will provide
continuing support for clinical care, research,
and education.
The gift will enable Methodist Health System
to stay on the leading edge of digestive health
medicine by providing for equipment and capital
updates necessary for delivering excellence
in patient care. A major focus of the digestive
health center will be an enhanced GI teaching
lab with a procedure room, fluoroscopy suite,
new ultrasound system, and training simulators
for medical education. The teaching lab is
integral to beginning the new gastroenterology
fellowship program, which will provide the
required hepatology training to fulfill liver
transplantation requirements from accrediting
organizations such as CMS, UNOS, and JCAHO.
“I am just so impressed with the entire
Methodist organization, everything the doctors
do and their commitment to their job and
patients — that’s why we give,” said Mr. Ford.
To make a contribution to The Nita and
John Ford Charitable Fund to support the
future of digestive health services at

the new Bradie James Breast Cancer Resource
Center within the Women’s Imaging Center at
Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
“Losing my mother to breast cancer has
connected me to this issue. Knowing that
women, men, and families are being touched
by Soul Survivors has given me the personal
satisfaction of knowing that I am truly making a
difference,” said Mr. James.
Etta James lost her battle with breast cancer
while Mr. James was a student at Louisiana
State University. He has since been a passionate
supporter in the fight against breast cancer
through the foundation he established to honor
her life.
The new resource center provides a private,
comforting environment for women and men
to read educational materials, use the computer
for online research, or talk to the staff volunteer.
In addition to providing key funding for
the resource center, the $71,000 gift from Mr.
James’ Foundation 56 is helping to support other
outreach activities, including creating a breast
cancer support group and expanding screening,
education, and detection services. A significant
use of the funds will include the purchase of
new digital mammography equipment for
Methodist’s mobile mammography unit to
expand outreach efforts into the community.

With chemotherapy, a mastectomy, and radiation
treatments now behind her, Sharon Redmon is
looking forward to just staying healthy and praying
her breast cancer doesn’t come back.
Sharon knew there was a problem in her breast and
sought medical care. However, since her husband’s
work insurance no longer covered spouses, her
repeated visits to a small neighborhood clinic were
getting too expensive. When the doctor suspected
cancer, he suggested she go to the county hospital.
She tried, but was unable to get in right away. Not
knowing where to turn, a friend suggested Sharon try
the Methodist Dallas Medical Center Golden Cross
Academic Clinic.
“They started me in a program where I could make
just a small payment. So I had the mammogram and
biopsy done,” said Sharon. Sharon was diagnosed
with inflammatory breast cancer in October
2009 and referred to an independently practicing
oncologist on the medical staff at Methodist Dallas,
where she received the lifesaving care she needed. “I
was nervous. Once I got there every nurse and all the
doctors were extremely nice.”
Sharon is grateful to donors who help fund
mammograms and breast health services for women
in her financial situation. She is also very interested in
the opening of the new Bradie James Breast Cancer
Resource Center.
“When I found out I had breast cancer, I was totally
lost,” said Sharon. “I think the new resource center
will help a lot. They will have more information on
what to expect, and it will benefit everybody. I think it
will be a good thing.”

HONORING LEADERSHIP AND COMPASSION
Brain and Spine Institute Named for Dr. James Moody
Methodist James A . Moody, MD, Brain and Spine Institute
In recognition of the leadership,
clinical excellence, and compassion
of their friend, Dr. James Moody,
Mary and Albert Huddleston made
a major gift in his name in the
hope that Dr. Moody’s example will
continue to inspire those qualities
in future physicians practicing
at Methodist.
“I want Dallas and all of its
citizens to thrive, especially
those with less and those who
have medical needs,” said Mrs.
Huddleston. “I think that means a lot
to Dr. Moody as well. He is a great
example of the type of doctor who
gives to the community. We are so
happy to give this gift in his name.”
The naming of the Methodist
James A. Moody, MD, Brain and
Spine Institute was announced at
an October reception honoring
Dr. Moody, celebrating his role
in helping to establish Methodist
Dallas Medical Center as one of
the premier centers in Dallas–
Fort Worth providing advanced
neurocritical care.
“Methodist Health System
plays a very important role in an
area of Dallas that is always on the
front burner,” said Mr. Huddleston.
“The more you become aware of
Methodist, the more impressed you
become. Their being technically
very capable and empathic is a
great combination.”
Today Methodist Dallas is one
of three adult trauma centers in the
city of Dallas, and it is one of the few
units in the nation with a dedicated
neurointensivist to oversee care
of patients with life-threatening
stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, and
brain or spine injury.
The Methodist James A. Moody,
MD, Brain and Spine Institute offers
an exceptional healing environment
for patients suffering traumatic
injury, illness, or disease to the
nervous system. The institute’s
multidisciplinary approach to
providing a continuum of care for
patients and their families brings
together a specialized team of
nurses, neurological technologists,
pain management specialists,
physical medicine specialists,
and rehabilitation specialists who
work alongside the highly skilled
neurosurgeons and neurologists on
the medical staff at Methodist.

ENCOURAGING JUNIOR VOLUNTEERS
Chase Program Offers Educational Opportunities
At age 14, Derek Fuller Jr., wanted to
volunteer and joined the Junior Volunteer
Program at Methodist Dallas Medical Center
where his mother worked part time. Like
most young people in the program, who
range in age from 14 to 18, Derek found the
experience rewarding in many ways. Through
serving hospital patients, visitors, and staff, he
and the peer and adult friends he has made
at the hospital enjoy making a difference in
the community. The young volunteers are
also benefiting from opportunities to build
character, confidence, and social skills, as well
as gaining important workplace and life skills.
For low to moderate income high

Volunteers annually. Each student provides
50 hours of service or more on weekends
through the school year and weekdays during
the summer.
Derek began participating in Methodist’s
Junior Volunteer Chase Program when he
entered high school at age 15. The program
provides students with one-on-one mentoring
and academic services to help prepare them for
college, including the SAT preparatory course
and exam. The students also participate in
hands-on educational experiences that range
from workshops with guest speakers in health
care fields such as pharmacy, radiology, and
nursing, to field trips to health care and science
institutions. The program is provided at no cost
to the students.
“Methodist Health System and Dallas ISD are
great community partners,” said Todd Nordeen,
senior vice president, Healthcare Nonprofit
Group of JPMorganChase & Co. “They have
this innovative and successful program we can
expand on that gives students interested in
health care careers opportunities that they may
not otherwise have to further their education.
We hope to see those kids stay in Dallas with
better job prospects for their future.”
Participating in one of the workshops
helped crystallize Derek’s career goal to
become a pharmacist, and the ambitious teen is
firmly on the path to earn his degree. Currently a
senior at the High School for Health Professions
at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center,
Derek is dual enrolled in courses through the
Dallas County Community College District to
earn his associate’s degree. He also finds time
to continue volunteering at Methodist.
“I genuinely enjoy it,” said Derek. “I go back
every opportunity I get.”

Golden Cross MedAssist Program
Soon after Betty and Jim West moved back to
Dallas from Colorado in 2004, they joined St. Andrew
United Methodist Church and learned their Sunday
school class had made a pledge to support Methodist
Health System’s Golden Cross program. Betty was
interested immediately in donating, and she began
giving $100 a month to support the Golden Cross
ministry. Since Betty’s passing in 2008, Mr. West
continues to make the gift in her honor each month.
In 2010 the Foundation wished to recognize the
Wests’ ongoing generosity, which had grown to a gift
exceeding $5,000. With Mr. West’s permission, a room
was named at the Golden Cross Academic Clinic to
celebrate Betty’s giving spirit and compassion for
people in desperate need of health care. Mr. West
later visited the clinic to view the memorial plaque
and room commemorating his wife.
“Betty would have loved it. She was a very quiet
person and she wouldn’t have said a lot, but she
would have loved the fact that it was done,” said Mr.
West. Commenting on the impact their gift has made,
Mr. West added, “Golden Cross serves a desperate
need. It’s a wonderful ministry.”

“I never thought I would be in
need. I have never been used to
living like this and had no idea what
I was going to do. I couldn’t even
afford the $4 medicines.”
Maryann Tatakis, then age 62,
and her much older husband had
serious financial problems and
were facing the loss of their home
when she was diagnosed with
chronic kidney disease in 2008.
Without medical insurance and
unable to afford a kidney specialist
— in addition to coping with her
diabetes and high blood pressure —
Maryann didn’t know where to turn.
Ted Hamlin, DO, a family medicine
physician on the medical staff at
Methodist Charlton Medical Center,
recommended the Methodist Dallas
Medical Center Golden Cross
Academic Clinic.
“They were fantastic and my
social worker did all the paperwork,”
said Maryann, who was enrolled
in the Golden Cross MedAssist
Program. “When I would go to
the clinic, they had my insulin and
high blood pressure medicine —
everything — ready for me. Without
the program, I wouldn’t be here.”
The MedAssist Program
provided the medications Maryann
needed desperately for almost a
year until she was approved for
Medicaid. Maryann, still a Golden
Cross patient, is especially grateful
for the tender care she has received
from Stephen Hines, MD, and the
staff. She is particularly thankful to
a resident who has since graduated
and started his own practice, Jared
Petty, DO, whose pep talks and
compassion helped her believe, “If
you have a positive attitude, you can
do anything.”

EQUIPMENT FUND
Equipped to Provide the Latest Care
Equipment Fund
Many supporters give generously to provide Methodist Health System
hospitals with the equipment needed to enhance patient care and fund
the needs of the communities we serve. The Foundation is especially
grateful for two important gifts this year.
The Harry S. Moss Heart Trust gave $50,000 to purchase a da Vinci®
robotic surgical system. The gift supports a campaign to purchase
a $1.9 million da Vinci robotic surgical system that allows minimally
invasive procedures as an alternative to open-heart surgery. The device
will benefit patients by allowing procedures to be done with less pain,
discomfort, and blood loss, as well as a quicker return to normal activities.
An anonymous donor has given $100,000 to purchase a Hana® orthopedic surgical table. The Hana table is used exclusively for hip and
knee patients to minimize trauma to muscles and tissue during surgery by
allowing for precise placement of the leg not possible with conventional
tables. The table allows surgeons to perform innovative, minimally
invasive joint replacement procedures that benefit patients with faster
recovery and less pain compared to traditional surgery.
The Equipment Fund is used to support every department of Methodist
Health System’s facilities including cardiology, radiology, surgery,
neonatal care, women’s imaging, intensive care, emergency and trauma
services, diagnostic laboratory services, dialysis, and clinical teaching
labs. Your gifts directly benefit patients by ensuring Methodist stays on
the leading edge of providing the most advanced health care services.
If you are interested in giving to the Equipment Fund, please call
the Methodist Health System Foundation at 214-947-4555 or visit
www.MethodistHealthSystem.org/Foundation.

BUILDING ON OUR STRENGTH
Expanding the Nursing Education Program
Methodist Health System was one of just
eight Texas health care organizations (only
two in the Dallas–Fort Worth area) to receive
the first 2010 grants from the Hospital-Based
Nursing Education Partnership Grant Program
being administered by the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board. The new grant
program awarded $385,520 to Methodist over
two years to increase enrollment in the current
Hospital-Based Nursing Education Partnership
(HNEP) program.
The HNEP program was created to partner
hospitals with academic institutions in response
to an anticipated shortage of registered nurses.
It is predicated that there will be 71,000 unfilled
RN positions in Texas by the year 2020. Methodist
Health System partnered with El Centro College
in Dallas and launched its HNEP pilot program at
Methodist Dallas Medical Center in 2005.
“We recognized that the dedication of our
employees to consistently deliver excellence in
patient care and satisfaction is one of the core
strengths of our organization. The program
builds on that strength by recruiting current
employees interested in pursuing careers in
registered nursing,” said Tony Paterniti, PhD,
RN, director of education, Methodist Dallas and
Methodist Charlton Medical Centers.
El Centro College offers the required
academic curriculum through distance learning
at Methodist Dallas and online. The hospital
provides clinical training including three clinical
instructors, a skills lab, equipment and supplies,
and classroom space with teleconferencing and
computers for students to access interactive
and prerecorded lectures from El Centro. The
program covers all of the students’ costs for
tuition, books, and lab supplies, as well as capital
equipment and faculty and clerical salaries.
Students enrolled in the program agree to
remain employed with Methodist for 30 months
following graduation. Since the program’s
inception at Methodist Dallas, 98 percent of
students passed the NCLEX-RN registration
examination on the first attempt.
“So far, we have added about 50 nurses to
Methodist Health System,” said Dr. Paterniti.
“One of our proudest success stories is an
oncology RN who started out employed in
the linen room. This program allows students
who are qualified and motivated, who may
not have met the perfect GPA requirement of
other programs, to earn their associate’s degree
in nursing and qualify to sit for the National
Council Licensure Examination to become a
licensed registered nurse.”
The grant received in early 2010 from
the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board is being used to expand the existing
hospital-based nursing program to
Methodist Charlton and double the number
of students enrolled from 40 to 80 annually.
The expansion will begin by adding ten
students a semester at Methodist Charlton
beginning Fall 2010.
“This program allows
students who are qualified
and motivated, who may
not have met the perfect
GPA requirement of other
programs, to earn their
associate’s degree in
nursing and qualify to sit
for the National Council
Licensure Examination
to become a licensed
registered nurse.”

APPRECIATING EXCELLENT CARE
Gift Serves Cardiology and Golden Cross Patients
Joyce and Dr. William A. Sellars
wh
o
Dr. William A. Sellars lived
his life determined to leave
the world a little better place
for having passed this way. He
served the Oak Cliff community
in private practice for 50 years.
A graduate of Southwestern
Medical Center, he entered
private practice with Dr. William
B. Dean. Later, upon completion
of training at Rhode Island
Hospital in Boston, he opened
his own clinic and became a
highly regarded allergy and
immunology specialist, serving
on the medical staff at Methodist
Health System for 44 years. As
Dr. Sellars’ health declined from
cardiac and digestive problems,
he also became a Methodist
patient many times.
After Dr. Sellars passed in
April 2009, his wife, Joyce, made
a $50,000 gift to the Foundation
to honor her husband and
recognize Methodist for the
care he received. Mrs. Sellars
designated $30,000 of the
gift to be used for cardiology
equipment and $20,000 to
support the Methodist Dallas
Medical Center Golden Cross
Academic Clinic.
A member of the Methodist
Dallas Medical Center Auxiliary
board who has volunteered at
the hospital for more than 12
years, Mrs. Sellars explained the
division of the gift.
“I love the hospital and my
husband did, too. We were
very appreciative of the very
excellent care he received as
an ongoing cardiology patient.
He also believed in giving
and helping others. He was a
very selfless person and did
volunteer work all during his
career for children with asthma
and allergies,” Mrs. Sellars said.
She hopes the gift to the Golden
Cross Fund will serve children in
memory of her husband.
“I wanted to give something to show our
appreciation to Methodist for the good
care my husband received as a patient.”

organizations such as The
Mansfield Women’s Club and
Methodist Mansfield Medical
Center Auxiliary are a vital
part of a strong, close-knit
community. Methodist Health
System is proud and appreciative
of their support. Since the
hospital opened in 2006, each
organization has given more
than $100,000 in total, helping
to ensure that their neighbors
throughout the Mansfield area
are served by Methodist’s quality
patient care.
In addition to their cheering
presence to assist patients,
visitors, and staff at the hospital,
the Methodist Mansfield Medical
Center Auxiliary volunteers help
support the needs of patient
care through a variety of
fundraising activities, including
gift shop sales, jewelry sales,
the annual Holly Days sale, and
Auxiliary cookbook sales. The
auxiliary’s gift of $37,177 in 2010
went to the Methodist Mansfield
Capital Campaign to support
the hospital’s continued growth
and expansion to meet the
needs of the local community.
Organized in 1997, the
Mansfield Women’s Club has
given much-needed support
to various community causes
through its fundraising efforts,
including its highlight event, the
annual Yellow Rose Charity Fest.
Methodist Mansfield Medical
Center has been the prime
beneficiary of the event since
2006. The 2010 casino-themed
evening held at the K Star Ranch
in April was a big success.
The club presented a gift of
$20,000 to Methodist Mansfield
for Cardiac Unit equipment
to perform minimally invasive
heart procedures.

Methodist Mansfield Chief Nursing Officer Jeanne Reeves accepts a $20,000 check from Mansfield Women’s Club President Genie Hermann, along with Director of OR Shelley Cook for the cardiac care unit at Methodist Mansfield. Club members raised the funds from their annual Yellow Rose Charity Fest. Since 2006 the Mansfield Women’s Club has given a total of more than $105,000 to the hospital.
Methodist Mansfield Medical Center President Laura Irvine accepts a $37,177 check from Connie Trail, Methodist Mansfield Auxiliary president. The funds will be used for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Since 2006 the auxiliary has given more than $120,000 to the hospital.

“Joyce Whiteley, a member of our women’s
group, was taking someone to the hospital on
a regular basis, and her granddaughter was in
nurses training in the nursery. During this time
she became aware that the hospital had some
needs. Through conversations with Sandy Sharp
and Marlies Peregory, the idea developed to
start an auxiliary to serve Methodist Charlton
Medical Center,” explained Joyce Gregory,
president of United Methodist Women at First
United Methodist Church Duncanville.
Sandy Sharp is the director of Volunteer
Services and Marlies Peregory is a financial
counselor at Methodist Charlton.
“We have members who have been involved
in the Methodist Dallas Medical Center Auxiliary
for years. They provide baby caps and blankets,
tray favors, and other kinds of support, as well
as fundraising for that hospital,” continued Ms.
Gregory. “That’s why we knew what an auxiliary
could do for Methodist Charlton.”
The first organization committee meeting
was held in August 2009. Attendees included
Joyce Whiteley, Joyce Gregory, Joyce Hutson,
Sina Kinslow, Rev. Jim Bowden, Sandy Sharp,
Kendall Huff, Marlies Peregory, and Cynthia
Mickens-Smith. Mses. Hutson and Kinslow are
both active in the Methodist Dallas Auxiliary. Rev.
Bowden is a member of the Methodist Charlton
advisory board, Mr. Huff is vice president of
Operations, and Ms. Smith is the community
relations liaison for Methodist Charlton. Betty
Michalski, another active volunteer, joined the
group at the second committee meeting. She
and Ms. Peregory serve as co-chairs until the
new auxiliary is formally organized.
The committee agreed the new auxiliary
should be a community organization rather
than a United Methodist Women organization,
and they hosted two events inviting community
and church leaders to get involved.
“Response has been quite good. Methodist
Charlton already has a strong volunteer group of
350 individuals who contributed 42,910 hours in
2009 to improving customer service to patients
and their families,” said Ms. Gregory. “The
hospital has a great presence in the community
and people are quite eager to help it grow.”
The first official meeting of the Methodist
Charlton Medical Center Auxiliary was held
September 14, 2010, in the Methodist Charlton
auditorium. Adoption of the charter and
selection of officers occurred during the
October auxiliary meeting.
If you are interested in joining the Methodist
Charlton Medical Center Auxiliary, please

30-MINUTE CLUB
Methodist Employees Support Each Other and Their Community
wh
o
We are so appreciative and
proud of Methodist Health System
employees. The 2009 Employee
Giving Campaign exceeded the goal
and raised more than $336,000.
Proceeds will be used to support
programs and services at Methodist
Health System; the BEN (Basic
Employee Needs) Fund, which
provides one-time assistance grants
to colleagues in time of critical need;
and United Way agencies across the
DFW Metroplex.
“We have an incredibly generous
and giving employee base at
Methodist Health System,” said
Angel Biasatti, 2009 campaign
chairwoman and Methodist
Mansfield Medical Center director of
marketing and community service.
“That we exceeded our campaign
goal this year is a tribute to the hard
work and dedication of our many
campaign volunteers and to the
caring attitude of all employees who
generously donated to help provide
the valuable services needed.”
The 30-Minute Club grew
to an all-time high of nearly 360
members. Club members raise funds
by contributing 30 minutes of their
salary per pay period, supporting
special projects for Methodist Health
System and the BEN Fund.
30-Minute Club members
were honored at the second annual
President’s Luncheon on June 1 at
Methodist Charlton Medical Center.
Among the executive leadership
to applaud the generosity of these
employees included Dr. Stephen
L. Mansfield, president and CEO,
Methodist Health System; April
Box Chamberlain, president and
CEO, Methodist Health System
Foundation; Laura Irvine, president,
Methodist Mansfield Medical Center;
Jonathan Davis, president, Methodist
Charlton Medical Center, and Michael
Mayo, president, Methodist Dallas
Medical Center. About 180 members
attended the event.
Methodist’s BEN Fund also
received $908 from a special
barbecue lunch sponsored by the
Methodist Dallas IS department.
Aaron Miri, IS manager, said, “We
wanted everyone to have some tasty
barbecue and to give back to our
colleagues. The barbecue was even
better knowing all the money went
to a fund to help fellow Methodist
staff members and their families
when a difficult time challenges
their lives.” The IS department
donated and cooked the brisket, and
Morrison Healthcare Food Services
donated the condiments.

MEDICINE PHYSICIANS
Charlotte and Arvel Haley, MD, Endowment Fund
Arvel Haley, MD
wh
o
Regarded as an exceptional
internist, devoted to his patients
and to teaching residents, Arvel
Haley, MD, served on the Methodist
Dallas Medical Center medical staff
from 1948 to 1994. To honor his
contribution to Methodist Health
System, the Foundation established
an endowed fund in his name to
support medical education.
Dr. Haley, who celebrated his
93rd birthday in January 2010, asked
that Charlotte, his wife of 70 years,
be remembered as well because
of her important role in his life and
practice. Charlotte served as the
office manager of his practice for 15
years after raising their four sons, all
of whom became physicians.
With the enthusiastic support of
their large family, Dr. and Mrs. Haley
generously pledged a challenge gift
to match the first $50,000 raised
by Methodist for the endowment
fund. Contributions to the Charlotte
and Arvel Haley, MD, Endowment
Fund will directly support internal
medicine house staff education,
help residents prepare for their
board examinations, and support
scholastic activities to improve
patient care.
At an appreciation luncheon
honoring Dr. Arvel Haley for his
decades of service to Methodist,
his sons were also recognized.
Steven Haley, MD, is a cardiologist
on staff at Methodist Dallas since
1978. Charles Haley, MD, is a public
health and preventive medicine
specialist. John Haley, MD, is an
ophthalmologist practicing in
Garland, Texas. Robert Haley, MD,
practices internal medicine on the
medical staff at UT Southwestern.
To support medical education
at Methodist Health System
through contributions to the
Charlotte and Arvel Haley, MD,
Endowment Fund, please call the

FILLING A DESPERATE NEED
Supporting the Golden Cross MedAssist Program
Dr. Stephen Hines (standing) visits with a group from Highland Park United Methodist Church during a luncheon and tour of Methodist Dallas Golden Cross Academic Clinic.w
ho
Every year, congregations
throughout the North Texas
Conference pledge annual
donations to support the Golden
Cross Fund. The fa ith-based
program of Methodist Health System
and the North Texas Conference
of the United Methodist Church
provides health care to people in the
community who cannot afford it.
One of the vital programs made
possible through Golden Cross
donations is the MedAssist Program
administered through the Methodist
Dallas Medical Center Golden
Cross Academic Clinic. The program
enables qualified patients to receive
free prescription drug assistance at
no cost. The patients are provided
access to social services, nutrition
services, and health education
programs to help them remain well
and active in the workplace and
community. Since its inception,
the MedAssist Program has provided
vital services and medication
to improve the lives of more than
2,837 patients.
Golden Cross also serves the
Congregational Health Ministry,
which forms partnerships with
churches within the North Texas
Conference to improve the physical
and spiritual health of congregations.
Among the many generous
Golden Cross supporters, Highland
Park United Methodist Church gave
$12,400 to help ensure Golden
Cross programs continue to serve
people with the greatest need in
our community.
In appreciation, a group of
Highland Park church members were
among the invited guests to tour
the Methodist Dallas Golden Cross
Academic Clinic during an onsite
luncheon with Methodist Health
System Foundation and clinic staff.
The tour showcased the excellent
work being done at the academic
clinic and provided church members
with an opportunity to see firsthand
how their gift is making a difference
in people’s lives.
For information on supporting
Golden Cross programs or the
Golden Cross Academic Clinic,
please call the Methodist Health
System Foundation at 214-947-4555
or visit www.MethodistHealthSystem.
