Dear Parents/Carers,
‘Keep moving forward in the kiss ‘n drop’, ‘please turn left’, ‘slow down to
avoid accidents and injuries’.
While these are common requests from staff and parents regarding
reminders for Encounter car park courtesy, my observation one
afternoon last week was of drivers being patient, accommodating,
friendly and appreciative.
I was overwhelmingly impressed that Encounter families recognise the
realities of 3:10-3:30pm each day, which is the funnel of congestion as
many cars leave via one exit in a short period of time.
With roadworks soon to commence on our doorstep, your patience,
courtesy and decency will be even more greatly appreciated as we grit
our teeth until it’s over. With or without intersection constructions, school
car parks are simply school car parks. We can be thankful for no parking
meters too, which some counterparts in Adelaide must endure.
I thank you for upholding student safety as a far greater priority than
leaving the grounds two minutes earlier. I also value the way in which it’s
being done with a gracious smile rather than having shades of ‘road
rage’ in the afternoon.
Many hands truly make light work and the tone of our car park is a small
yet significant example of Encounter families done what’s best for the
common good.
Thank you.
God’s Blessings

Dear Parents.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first Night on the Green. My
experience was further enhanced by finding out that
our guest performer was none other than the
legendary Peter Combe - a childhood hero of mine. As
anyone who was a child of the 80's would know, music
lessons at schools around Australia, consisted of the
class sitting in a circle on the floor, huddled around the
cassette player, ABC Song books open on laps, belting
out songs such as Toffee Apple, Juicy Juicy Green
Grass and Spaghetti Bolognaise. (If you were 'Star of
the Week' you even got to press the 'Stop' button on
the tape recorder, between songs - how times have
changed!)
Music lessons at Encounter look a lot different now than
they did in my formative years. However, one thing has
not changed. Music continues to be an important part
of the curriculum. As well as providing enjoyment to
many of our students and opportunities for creativity
and expression, research suggests that musical
experiences in childhood can actually accelerate
brain development (particularly in the areas of
language acquisition and reading skills). This is why our
students are given opportunities to join choirs, take up
instruments, and participate in music lessons as part of
the formal curriculum.
As those of us present at Night on the Green would
have experienced, music provided us with an
opportunity to enjoy time together as a community,
and celebrate the musical talents and creativity of our
students.
So last Friday it was Music. Next Friday… Sports Day.
How fortunate are our students to have opportunities to
experience and grow in both.
Blessings,
Tori Weiss
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
As I reflect on the community celebration that was Night
on the Green, I’m so very thankful that I was called to be
part of the Encounter family.
This was further evidenced this week, as I spent some time
compiling the ‘Affirmations’ written by our Year 12
students to each other. All too often, the media portrays
our young people in a negative light, however, I stand
firm in my belief that our Year 12 students are wonderful,
empathetic and caring young adults. It was a privilege to
read and share the affirmations they wrote to each other,
and it has been up there as one of the highlights of my
year so far.
Other happenings in the Middle and Senior School
include Year 7 camp in Robe this week, and the Personal
Project sessions for Year 10 students commencing. This
exciting initiative is a wonderful precursor to the Research
Project – a compulsory subject in the SACE.
Last week I attended a presentation at the New Venture
Institute at Flinders on Innovation and Commercialisation
for Start-ups. With entrepreneurship a focus for some of
our young people (we already have students who have
started their own businesses), Encounter is continuing to
make strong connections with universities and industries
to ensure our students have access to the most up to
date information as they move beyond schooling. As we
now are almost at the halfway point of the term, I wish
you a wonderful and restful weekend.
Blessings,
Penny McKenzie

MRS MONIKA FOULKES
Year 3 Teacher
It has been a pleasure to experience the
rhythms and heart of Encounter in so many
ways already this year. I have been particularly
impressed with how truly and wholeheartedly
the staff, students and parents embrace and
embody the sense of ‘home’ which I heard
about long before arriving here!
I hail from the southern suburbs of Adelaide.
Each day, I enjoy the long drive, a glorious
sunrise and a hard-to-swallow sermon with my
first travel-mug of coffee. I am passionate
about attention to detail, going the extra mile,
the perfect burger, and all things creative – but
above and beyond, I am passionate about
Jesus. I have been involved in overseas mission
trips on almost every continent, leading teams
of teenagers to the far corners of a world in
need. I love the adventure of following Jesus,
and teaching – and look forward to the year
ahead, particularly exploring more of the
opportunities that Encounter has as a Lutheran
school.
Serving One Another
Last Friday night saw our community come together to
enjoy some time celebrating all things Encounter.
Being able to witness Encounter families, both new and
not so new, as well as families from the wider community,
eating, drinking, laughing, singing and even dancing
together reminded me how blessed we are to have our
College situated in such a wonderful region.
Whilst the support of this community was overwhelming,
so too were the tireless efforts of our staff in coming
together to organise, prepare, cook and serve food, pour
drinks and provide entertainment to all who attended -
all this after a full day at work! This was their contribution,
above the every day educating of our children, in serving
our families and friends and providing an event that
allowed us all to be together, enjoying each others’
company in a carnival atmosphere.
The next event on our busy College Calendar is Sports
Day and here we will not only witness the incredible
efforts of our staff, yet again, to ensure the success of this
event, but the service provided by our generous P&F and
our Year 12 Food Tech students, in catering for the event.

‘Les Mis’ gets the Encounter Touch!
You may have recently noticed some members of our
College community walking around school humming
tunes, or singing songs…. this is because a number of
staff, students, past students, and parents are currently in
rehearsals for this year’s South Coast Choral & Arts
Society’s production of Les Miserables. The musical,
based on Victor Hugo’s epic novel, follows the trials of
Jean Valjean as he is pursued relentlessly by Inspector
Javert. The story is set against a back drop of a
student led uprising in Paris.
Students involved are Alexis Bruce (Year 6), and
Jasmine Walter (Year 2) who are both sharing the roles
of young Cosette and young Eponine. Teachers Mr Tim
Wormald and Mr Jon Grear will both be seen on stage
playing a variety of roles. Past students Jack Doherty,
Minnie Broad, and Natalie Harding who will play the role
of Eponine will also grace the stage. Finally instrumental
teacher Guy Mansbridge, parents Derek Walter
(Musical Director), Deana Constable (Vocal Coach),
and Belinda Britton (Pianist) and College volunteer,
Serenity Ogilvy are also involved. It is great to see our
College community so involved with the Arts in Victor
Harbor.
Les Miserables will have 10 performances only, between
11-26 May. Tickets can be purchased through the
following link:www.trybooking.com/343422
Congratulations to our College Captain, Lewis
Ridley, who received the MVP (Most Valuable
Player) at the A Grade Senior Men's State
Championships for Basketball where he was
representing Great Southern in the Senior
Championships.
Lewis who is part of the Elite Basketball Program at
Encounter, has represented the State, and played
overseas in New Zealand. At 6'4, Lewis is aiming to
play College Basketball and study in the USA.
Lewis currently plays for the Southern Tigers where
he is fortunate enough to be under the direction of
coach Dean Nyberg who also provides coaching
to our Elite Program players and has had a huge
impact on Lewis’ abilities and successes.
Lewis also wished to acknowledge the support of
Great Southern Basketball and also local Ben
Basham for his defensive training and 3 on 3
practices.

Sapsasa Swimming Carnival
Last week our Encounter Swimming Team travelled to
Strathalbyn to compete in the SAPSASA Southern Fleurieu
Swimming Carnival. The students had a really successful
day resulting in Hanah Partridge, Finn Porteous, Bailey Torok, Mathys Moolman, Leo Torok and Angus Bruce
selected to represent the Southern Team at the State
Swimming Day on the 23rd March. Thank you also to Mikala Brider, Arley Partridge, Daniel Sue and Chantelle
Kearton for your contribution to the Encounter Team.

Atomic Creativity
Mr Keough’s Year 9 Science classes have been
demonstrating their creativity by replicating the first 38
elements of the periodic table.
The students were required to inquire, design and
build a 3D model of an atom, ensuring they had the
correct atomic structure of each atom.
Each student’s work has a QR Code attached, which
can be scanned to a website that provides details of
the chosen element.
Scan these QR codes to see an example. If you don’t
have a QR code function on your device, you can
download a free app from the app store.
SPORTS DAY CATERING
Parents & Friends will be providing the following options on the day:
Cake Stall - any donations to sell at this stall would be greatly appreciated.
Sausage Sizzle & Burgers from the BBQ
