'잔인한 하나님?--노아와 그의 믿음'(3)

"나는 나를 믿지 않는다"(I Don't Trust Myself)

로마서 6:1-4

1.

Happy Thanksgiving! 감사절을 맞는 여러분 모두의 마음 안에 주님의 은총이 가득하게 되기를

기도합니다. 감사절로 인해 모이는 모든 모임 마다에 하늘의 은혜가 넘치기를 기도합니다. 행복한

사람들이 감사하는 것이 아닙니다. 감사함으로 행복해집니다. 마음 깊이에서 솟아나는 감사로써

여러분 모두 행복을 누리시기 바랍니다.

Happy Thanksgiving! I pray for all of you will be full of the grace of God during Thanksgiving and that all Thanksgiving gatherings are overflowing with heavenly grace. It is not that happy people that give thanks, but that giving thanks makes us happy. May you feel the happiness that comes from being truly grateful.

아울러, 이 모든 감사가 궁극적으로 어디를 향해야 하는지 기억하시기 바랍니다. 때로 이 땅의

것을 즐기느라 하늘을 잊고 사는 우리 자신을 발견합니다. 모든 선한 것의 근원이신 하나님을 생각하고

진실한 감사를 드리는 저와 여러분이 되기를 기도합니다.

Additionally, please remember whom we should ultimately be thankful to. Often, we find ourselves so busy enjoying our earthly lives, we forget about heaven. I pray that you and I will think of God who is the source of all good, and give sincere thanks.

오늘은 영화 <노아>가 제기한 질문들을 성경 말씀에 비추어 생각해 보는 세 번째 시간입니다.

영화 <노아>의 스토리 라인이 성경의 노아 이야기와 많이 다르다는 사실에 대해서는 이미 언급한 바

있습니다.

Today is the third time to think of the questions that the movie, Noah, suggests, reflecting on the words in the bible. I already mentioned about the fact that the story line in the movie is much different from the story of Noah in the bible.

영화는 거대한 성을 짓고 문명을 발전시키면서 온 세상을 죄악으로 오염시켰던 가인의 후손과는 달리

셋의 후손은 겨우 명맥만 이어가는 것으로 그리고 있습니다. 셋의 9 대 손인 라멕은 182 세에 아들을

낳고 이렇게 말합니다.

The movie describes how the descendants of Cain built great castles, developed civilization and contaminated the world with all kinds of sins, while the descendants of Seth barely managed to survive. The 9th descendant, Lamech, after having his son at his age 182 says:

주님께서 저주하신 땅 때문에, 우리가 수고하고 고통을 겪어야 하는데, 이 아들이 우리를 위로해

줄 것이다. (창 5:29)

“He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hand caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.” (Gen. 5:29)

그래서 '노아'라고 이름을 짓습니다. 히브리어로 '위로'라는 뜻입니다. 창세기 6 장으로 가면, 노아의

이야기가 본격적으로 시작되는데, 성인이 된 노아를 이렇게 소개합니다.

So, they named him ‘Noah’ which means ‘comfort’ in Hebrew. Chapter 6 of Genesis begins the story of Noah and introduces the adult Noah like this:

노아의 역사는 이러하다. 노아는 그 당대에 의롭고 흠이 없는 사람이었다. 노아는 하나님과

동행하는 사람이었다. 노아는 셈과 함과 야벳, 이렇게 세 아들을 두었다. (창 6:9-10)

“This is the account of Noah. He was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.” (Gen, 6:9-10)

성경에 의하면, 방주가 지어질 때 세 아들들은 장성하여 결혼을 한 상태입니다. 그래서 하나님은

노아에게 홍수가 나면 "너는 아들들과 아내와 며느리들을 모두 데리고 방주로 들어가거라"(6:18)라고

말씀하십니다. 그런데 영화에서는 셈은 청년으로, 둘째 아들 햄은 청소년으로 그리고 막내 야벳은

어린이로 나옵니다. 이렇게 설정한 데에는 그 나름의 이유가 있습니다.

According to the bible, when the Ark was building, the three sons were already grown up and married. That is why God said, “You will enter the ark, you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.” (Gen 6:18) But in the movie Shem is a young man, Ham is an adolescent, and the youngest son, Japheth is still a child. There is reason why they set-up like this.

어느 날, 노아는 세상 모든 생명이 물 속에 잠겨 죽는 꿈을 꿉니다. 하도 꿈이 이상하여 할아버지

므두셀라를 찾아갑니다. 므두셀라는 신비로운 기운이 감도는 산에 홀로 살고 있었습니다. 하늘의

신비를 마음에 간직하고 사는 듯한 므두셀라는 노아에게 차를 한 잔 줍니다. 그 차를 마시고 노아는

깜박 잠에 빠져 다시 환상을 봅니다. 그런 과정을 통해 노아는 하나님께서 세상을 홍수로 심판하실

것이라는 계획을 알아차립니다. 아울러, 하나님이 지으신 생명을 보존하기 위해 방주를 지으라는

사명도 깨닫습니다.

One day, Noah dreamed that all life in the world died by being submerged in water. The dream was so strange that he visits his grandfather, Methuselah. Methuselah was living alone on a mysterious mountain. Methuselah, as if he lives with all kinds of mystery of the heaven, gives a cup of tea to Noah. Noah falls asleep after drinking the tea and has a vision. Through this Noah realizes God’s plan, which is that God would judge the world with a flood. He also realizes his mission is to build the ark to the save lives God created.

노아의 가족이 므두셀라를 만나러 가던 길에 폐허가 된 동네를 지납니다. 가인의 자손에게 습격

당한 것입니다. 그들은 시체 더미 가운데서 살아있는 소녀를 발견합니다. 그 소녀는 옆구리에 깊은

상처를 입고 신음하고 있습니다. 노아의 가족은 소녀를 데리고 가서 치료해 줍니다. 그의 이름은

일라(Ila)입니다. 일라는 노아의 가족과 함께 살면서 큰 아들 셈과 연정을 쌓아 가지요.

On the way to visiting Methuselah, Noah’s family passes a deserted village. The village had been assaulted by the descendants of Cain. They find a girl alive in the middle of dead bodies. The girl is deeply injured in her side and groaning with pain. Noah’s family rescues the girl and takes care of her. The girl name is Ila. Ila lives with Noah’s family and she and Shem learn to care for each other.

방주가 완성되어 갈 즈음에 일라가 홀로 있는 노아에게 찾아와 셈을 위해 온전한 여자를 구해

오라고 간청을 합니다. 자신은 옆구리에 얻은 상처로 인해 여자 구실을 할 수가 없고 아기도 낳을 수가

없었기 때문입니다. 햄과 야벳을 위해서도 아내감을 찾아 와야 하지 않겠느냐고 말합니다. 홍수로 인해

다 죽고 나면 자손을 이을 수가 없겠기 때문입니다.

When the Ark is almost done, Ila comes to Noah and asks him to find a perfect girl for Shem. She cannot have a baby because of the wound in her side. And she says that Noah should also find wives for Ham and Japheth. If everyone dies from the flood, there could be no more offspring.

일라의 말에 노아는 마치 망치로 얻어맞은 듯 충격을 받습니다. 그는 정신을 수습한 후에 얼굴을

가리고 가인의 땅에 잠입해 들어갑니다. 일라의 말대로 소녀들을 데리고 오려 한 것입니다.

듣던 대로, 가인의 땅에서는 눈 뜨고 볼 수 없는 잔인한 살륙과 범죄가 벌어지고 있습니다. 짐승만이

아니라 여자와 어린 아이를 먹잇감으로 사고 팝니다. 그 모습을 보고 노아는 치를 떱니다.

그 때 그의 앞을 스쳐 지나가는 사람이 있었습니다. 어디서 많이 본 것 같아서 자세히 그 사람을 주목해

봅니다. 아뿔사! 또 다른 노아가 그곳에 웅크리고 숨어 있는 겁니다. 그 장면을 잠시 보시지요.

Noah is shocked by Ila’s words. After getting his senses back, Noah covers his face and steals into

the land of Cain. Following Ila’s advice, he tries to take girls home. Just as he heard, cruel and horrible le

slaughters and sinful acts are being performed in the land of Cain. The people there were buying and selling

not only animals, but women and children for fodder. Witnessing these acts, Noah quivers with rage. At

that moment, someone passed in front of Noah. He looks familiar so Noah takes a better look. Gosh!

Another Noah was hidden there, crouched down. Let’s watch the scene for a minute.

여기서노아는자신도그들과다르지않다는사실을깨닫습니다.

그들에게있는죄악이자신에게도있음을,자신도언제든그들과같아질수있음을깨닫고몸서리쳐놀랍니다

.그는발걸음을돌이켜방주로돌아옵니다.

그리고는스스로결론을짓습니다.인간이지구상에서완전히사라지는것이라고하나님의뜻이라고!그렇

기위해서는세아들이인류의마지막이되어야한다고!

Here, Noah realizes that he is no different than these people. He realized and shuddered at the fact that he also had the sin in himself just like these people and that he could always become like them. He turned his steps back to the arc. Then he drew his own conclusion that the complete disappearance of

humankind from the face of earth was God’s will and that his three sons would have to be the last humankind in order to do so.

그로부터얼마후에둘째아들햄이자신의아내감을구해달라고노아에게청합니다.

노아는단호하게거절하지요.

화가난햄은스스로아내감을찾기위해가인의성으로들어갑니다.햄은깊은구덩이속에서죽어가던소녀를

발견하고방주로데리고옵니다. 하지만불행하게도소녀는오는길에덫에걸립니다.

소녀는고통에몸부림치고햄은덫을벗겨보려힘쓰지만역부족입니다. 홍수는이미시작되었습니다.

그절박한순간에노아가햄을발견합니다. 햄은소녀를구해달라고청하지만,

노아는햄만을데리고방주로돌아옵니다.이일로인해햄은아버지를향해불같은분노를품습니다.

Sometime later, his second son Ham asked Noah to find a woman to become his wife. Noah refused flatly. Infuriated, Ham walked by himself into Cain’s castle in order to find a woman to marry. Ham found a girl who was dying in a deep hole and brought her to the ark. Unfortunately, however, the girl got caught in a trap on the way. She writhed in the agony of pain, and Ham tried to take off the trap but he could not succeed. The flood had already started. In such a desperate moment, Noah discovered Ham. Ham asked him to save the girl, but Noah took Ham only and came back to the ark. As a result, Ham was in a blaze of anger towards Noah.

노아와그의가족은무사히방주안으로대피합니다. 노아는자신의과업을완수했다고생각했습니다.

Noah and his family safely shelter in the ark. Noah thought that he fulfilled his task.

그런데문제가생깁니다. 일라가임신을했다는겁니다. 그소식에노아는기겁을합니다. 알고보니,

노아가모르는사이에그의아내나아마가므두셀라에게가서부탁합니다.

므두셀라는손주며느리의부탁을거절하지못하고홍수가나기직전에일라를만나옆구리의상처를치료해

줍니다. 여성의역할도할수있게되었고임신을할수도있게된것입니다.

그사실을노아는모르고있었습니다. (아내들이란다이렇습니다. 중요한순간의남편의일을망쳐놓습니다.

그래서남편들은불같이화를냅니다. 하지만나중에보면그것이남편을살립니다.

남자를죄에빠뜨린것도여자이지만, 남자를구원하는것도여자입니다.)

However, a problem occurs. Ila is pregnant. Noah is shocked by the news. It turns out that Noah’s wife Naamah went to Methuselah behind Noah’s back and asked him to heal Ila. Methuselah could not refuse his granddaughter-in-law’s request, met Ila immediately before the flood, and healed the wound on her side. Ila was now able to function as a woman and to become pregnant. Noah did not know about that. (Wives are all like this. They interfere with their husbands’ work at a crucial moment. So husbands become infuriated. In the end, however, the wives’ deeds save their husbands. It is a woman who caused a man to sin, but it is also a woman who saves a man.)

전혀예상하지못한사태앞에서노아는하나님께묻습니다. 어찌해야할지대답해달라고호소합니다.

하지만하나님은아무말씀도하지않습니다. 노아는하나님의침묵을자기방식대로해석합니다.

그리고는아내에게돌아와말합니다. 만일남자아이가태어나면그대로살게하겠지만,

여자아이가태어나면태어나는순간자신의손에의해죽임을당할것이라고.

Facing an event that he never expected, Noah asks and urges God to answer what he should do. However, God did not say anything. Noah interpreted God’s silence in his own way. Then he comes back to his wife and says that if a boy is born, he will live, but if a girl is born, she will be killed by his hand the moment she is born.

때가차서일라가해산을합니다. 아이를받은나아마는그자리에서통곡합니다.

딸이나온것입니다.닥쳐올비극을생각하며며느리와시어머니가서로부둥켜안고우는데,아이가또나옵

니다.이번에도딸입니다. 딸쌍둥이를얻은것입니다.

Days pass and Ila gives birth to a baby. After receiving the baby, Naamah wails on the spot. It is a girl. When the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law embrace each other and cry at the tragedy to come, another baby comes out. It is another girl. Ila has given birth to twin girls.

일라가해산한것을알고노아는칼을들고찾아갑니다. 하지만며느리는사라지고없습니다.

그때방주위에서아이우는소리가들립니다. 노아는미친듯이달려올라갑니다.

일라는딸을양팔에안고방주끝에서있습니다. 인간의모습을잃은노아는그들을향해걸어갑니다.

Upon finding out that Ila has delivered, Noah goes to her with a sword in his hand. However, his daughter-in-law has disappeared. Then the crying of the babies is heard from above the ark. Noah frantically goes up there. Ila is standing at the end of the ark with girls in her arms. Noah, who has lost his humane side, walks up to them.

노아가다가오자일라는아이들이울면서죽게하고싶지는않다고,아이들을달랠여유를달라고부탁

합니다. 그리고자장가를불러주지요.일라가아플때노아가불러주었던그자장가입니다.

아이들이다시잠에듭니다. 그때노아는칼을높이듭니다.

이영화를본사람들이가장인상깊게기억하는그장면을잠시보시겠습니다.

When Noah approaches, Ila asks him to give her time to soothe the babies because she dows not want the babies to die while they cry. Then she sings a lullaby. It is the lullaby sung by Noah to Ila when she was sick. The babies fall asleep again. Then Noah raised the sword high. Let us view this scene which gives a deep impression to those who watched the movie.

하나님의뜻을완성할마지막단계에노아는서있었습니다.

그런데그마지막단계에서그는포기합니다.

"더이상은못하겠습니다"라고말하며칼을버립니다.그사건후에그는스스로를패배자로낙인찍고살아갑

니다. 홍수가그친후에도그는가족과떨어져삽니다.

하나님의뜻도이루지못했고,가족들에게도씻을수없는상처를주었기에홀로살기를선택한것입니다.창

세기 9 장에보면노아가포도를재배하고포도주를즐기는것으로나오는데,

작가와감독은노아가죄책감을잊기위에포도주에취해산것으로그립니다.

Noah is standing on the final stage of fulfilling God’s will, but he gives up on this final stage. “I cannot do it anymore,” says Noah, throwing away his sword. After the occurrence, he brands himself a loser and continues with his life. After the flood stops, he lives apart from his family. He chooses to live alone because he could not fulfill God’s will and gave indelible wounds to his family. In Genesis chapter 9, Noah plants grapes and enjoys drinking wine, and the writer and the director depict Noah becoming drunk in order to forget his feelings of guilt.

노아가술에서깨어났을때, 며느리일라를만납니다.이장면에서일라가노아에게묻습니다.

왜아이들을죽이지않았느냐고. 그러자노아가대답합니다.영상을하나만더보겠습니다.

When Noah becomes sober, he meets his daughter-in-law, Ila. During this scene Ila asks Noah why he did not kill the babies. Then Noah answers. Let us watch one more video clip.

아이들을살해하려고칼을들기전까지노아는자신안에있는악에대해서만생각했습니다.그악을없

애기위해싸웠습니다.하지만두손녀의자는모습을보는순간그의마음안에는오직사랑밖에없었습니다.

일라가딸들을위해불렀던자장가는실은노아의분노를가라앉히는노래였습니다.일라는마치예언자처럼

노아에게말합니다. 이제는선함을, 사랑을, 자비를선택하며살아가라고. 그것이다시시작하는길이라고.

Until Noah raised his sword to kill the babies, he only thought about the evil that was in him. He fought to eradicate the evil. However, when he saw his two granddaughters sleeping, only love was in his heart. The lullaby that Ila sang to the daughters was in fact a song that calmed down Noah’s rage. Like a prophet, Ila tells Noah that the way to start anew is to choose good, love and mercy.

이 영화를 통해 작가와 감독이 제시하려는 메시지가 바로 이것입니다. 그들은 인간의 내면에

선과 악이 혼재하고 있다는 사실을 인정합니다. 누구나 두발가인과 같은 악인이 될 수 있고, 누구나

노아와 같은 거룩한 사람이 될 수 있습니다. 둘 사이에서의 선택할 수 있는 결정권이 우리에게 주어져

있습니다. 인간의 희망 그리고 인류의 희망은 선과 악 사이에서 바른 선택을 하며 살아가는

것에 달려 있습니다.

This is exactly the message that the writer and the director intended to present through this movie. They admit that good and evil coexist inside a human being. Anyone can become an evildoer like Tubal-Cain and anyone can become a holy person like Noah. The discretion to choose between those two is given to us. The hope of human beings and mankind depends on our lives making right decisions between good and evil.

이것이 유대교의 한계 그리고 무신론자의 한계입니다. 시나리오를 쓴 아리 헨델은 유대교인이고,

감독인 아로노브스키는 무신론자입니다. 유대교의 가르침에 따르면, 인간의 바른 선택이 죄악의

문제를 해결한다고 믿습니다. 바른 선택을 도와주는 것이 율법입니다. 그래서 히브리 시인 중 한

사람은 "주님의 말씀은 내 발의 등불이요, 내 길의 빛입니다"(시 119:105)라고 노래했습니다.

유대교만이 아니라 세계 모든 종교들이 바른 선택을 가르치고 또한 그것에 희망을 걸고 있습니다.

'양심적 무신론자'들도 인간의 바른 선택이 유일한 희망이라고 주장합니다.

This is the limitation of Judaism and also atheists. Ari Handel who wrote the movie scenario is a Judaist and the director, Darren Aronofsky is an atheist. According to the teaching of Judaism, right decisions by human beings are believed to solve the issue of sin. The law enables right decisions. Therefore, one of the Hebrew poets sang, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105) Not only Judaism but all the other religions in the world teach right decisions and also pin their hopes on making them. Conscientious atheists also insist that the right decisions by human beings are the only hope.

바로 이 지점에서 기독교의 입장은 달라집니다. 인간 안에 선과 악이 혼재한다는 점에 대해서는

기독교도 동의합니다. 하지만 선과 악 사이에서 바른 선택을 할 능력이 인간을 혹은 이 세상을 구원할

수 있다고 믿지 않습니다. 바른 선택을 할 능력이 인간에게 있기는 하지만 그 능력은 너무도 깨어지기

쉬워서 희망의 근거가 될 수 없습니다.

At this point, the Christian stance differs. Christianity agrees with the point that good and evil coexist inside a human being. However, we do not believe that right decisions between good and evil can save us or this world. Although we are capable of making right decisions, such capabilities are so fragile and thus cannot be the foundation of our hope.

인간은 조건이 갇추어 졌을 때에만 선한 존재입니다. 만일 여러분이 여러분 자신을 선한

사람이라고 믿는다면, 그만한 조건이 갖추어져 있기 때문입니다. 어느 정도 건강도 있고, 경제적으로도

어느 정도 든든하고, 주변 환경도 받쳐 주기 때문에 선을 선택하며 사는 것입니다. 물론 그런

환경에서도 악을 선택하며 사는 사람도 있습니다만, 더 많은 사람들은 선하게 살려고 노력합니다.

하지만 그 조건 중 일부가 심하게 결여되면 그 능력은 순식간에 증발되어 버립니다. 여러분이 선하게

살고 있는 것은 여러분이 정말 선해서가 아닙니다. 제 말이 아니라 성경의 증언입니다.

We are good beings only when some conditions are satisfied. If you believe you are a good person, it

is because you have enough conditions fulfilled. Because you have some degree of health, financial strength and supporting surroundings, you are living your life while choosing good. Of course, there are some people who choose evil despite such circumstance, but more people try to live lives of virtue. However, when a portion of such conditions becomes significantly insufficient, our capability for virtue evaporates in an instant. You are living a life of virtue not because you are really a good being. This is not my words, but is testified in the Bible.

어디 그뿐입니까? 일정한 조건이 갖추어 지면 우리는 악을 선택하고 또한 즐기게 되어 있습니다.

1961 년 6 월 7 일, 독일의 뉴렘버그 (Nuremberg)에서 있었던 아이히만 재판 (Eichmann Trial)의 일화를

기억하십니까? 아돌프 아이히만 (Adolf Eichmann)은 히틀러의 심복으로 나치 정권이 행한 그 엄청난

악행을 계획하고 추진한 사람입니다.

That is not all. We can choose evil and even enjoy it when certain conditions are met. Do you remember the Eichmann trial that happed in Nuremberg, Germany on June 7th, 1961? Adolf Eichmann, as Hitler’s right-hand man, planned and executed such terrible evil deeds conducted by the Nazi regime.

2 차 대전 후에 아이히만을 재판하는 자리에 예히엘 디누어 (Yehiel DeNur)라는 유대인이

증언자로 나섭니다. 그는 아우슈비츠 수용소에서 2 년 동안 감금되어 있으면서 수 많은 사람들이 죽임

당하는 것을 목격했습니다. 그 참상을 증언하는 자리에서 디누어는 피고석에 앉은 아이히만을 보게

되었습니다. 그 순간, 그는 잠시 말을 멈추었다가 격하게 통곡하기 시작합니다. 그리고는 그 자리에

풀썩 쓰러집니다. 그로 인해 재판은 중단되었습니다.

After the 2nd World War was over, Yehiel DeNur, a Jew testified at the Eichmann trial. He witnessed so many deaths while imprisoned in the Auschwitz concentration camp for 2 years. While testifying to the horrors, DeNur came to look at Eichmann sitting at the defense table. At that moment, he stopped talking momentarily and started wailing intensely. And then, he collapsed there. As a result, the trial was halted.

그로부터 20 여년이 지난 1983 년, CBS 방송의 유명한 대담 프로인 60 Minutes 의 진행자인 마이크

월러스(Mike Wallace)가 디누어를 만나 인터뷰를 합니다. 월러스가 묻습니다. 아이히만을 보고 실신한

이유가 무엇이었느냐고. 그에 대한 증오심 때문에? 두려움 때문에? 아니면 고통스러운 기억 떄문에?

In 1983, 20 years after the trial, Mike Wallace, the correspondent for the famous CBS talk program 60 Minutes interviewed DeNur. Wallace asked the reason why he fainted after looking at Eichmann. Because of the hatred toward Eichmann? Fear? Horrid memories?

디누어는 그 어느 것도 아니라고 대답합니다. 수백만의 인명을 살해한 아이히만이 평범한

사람의 모습으로 앉아 있는 것 때문에 충격을 받고 쓰러졌다는 것입니다. 그는 아이히만이 괴물과 같은

사람일 것이라고 생각했습니다. 그런데 옆집 아저씨의 모습을 하고 피고석에 초라하게 앉아 있었던

것입니다. 디누어는 월러스에게 말합니다. "저는 내 자신에 대해 두려워졌습니다. 나도 그 사람처럼 될

수 있음을 보았습니다. 저는 그 사람과 전혀 다를 것이 없었습니다..."(I was afraid about myself. I saw

that I am capable to do this. I am ... exactly like he.)

DeNur responded that it was none of these. Rather, as DeNur explained to Wallace, all at once he collapsed in a shock after realizing that Eichmann was sitting there with a look of an ordinary man, not the monster-like army officer who had sent millions to their deaths. This Eichmann was sitting there poorly with a look of an ordinary man next door. "I was afraid about myself," said DeNur. "... I saw that I am capable to do this. I am ... exactly like he."

만일 아이히만이 저나 여러분과 같은 조건에 살았다면 아주 교양있고 선한 사람으로 살았을

것입니다. 이 말은 뒤집어도 진실이 됩니다. 저나 여러분이 만일 아이히만과 같은 조건에 있었다면

그가 행했던 것과 같은 혹은 그보다 더한 악을 행했을 수도 있었을 것입니다. 그것이 인간입니다.

그것이 우리가 가지고 있는 선과 악의 현실입니다. 그것이 우리가 가진 선한 의지의 한계입니다.

If Eichmann had lived in a same condition as you and me, he would live a life of much culture and virtue. The reverse is also true. If you and I were in a same condition as Eichmann, we probably would do his evil deeds or even more. This is a human being. This is the reality of good and evil in us. This is the limitation of our good will.

기독교는 우리의 선한 의지에 희망을 걸지 않습니다. 성경은 인간의 타락한 본성의 회복을

말합니다. 깨어진 하나님의 형상의 회복에 대해 말합니다. 인간의 망가진 의지의 온전한 회복을

말합니다. 인간 내면의 악의 소멸을 말합니다. 그것이 미래에 새 하늘과 새 땅이 임할 때 완성될

것이지만, 지금 이곳에서 우리 각자의 내면에 일어날 수 있다고 말합니다. 그것을 '거듭 난다'(born

again)라고 말합니다. 다시 지어진다고 말합니다. 새 사람이 되었다고 말합니다. 그것 아니고는 희망이

없다는 것이 성경의 증언입니다.

Christianity does not pin its hope on our good will. The Bible declares the restoration of human being’s fallen nature, the restoration of God’s broken image, the complete restoration of human being’s broken will, and the extinction of evil inside a human being. Although these will be complete when a new heaven and a new earth arrive in a future, it is said that these can happen now inside each of us right here. This is called ‘born again’. This is called recreated. This is called becoming a new human being. The Bible testifies that this is the only hope for us.

오늘 읽은 말씀에서 바울 사도는, 우리가 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 세례를 받을 때 우리의 옛

사람은 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못박혀 죽고 부활하신 주님과 함께 새 사람으로 태어난다고

말씀합니다. 우리의 옛 사람이 이미 죽었기에 원죄는 더 이상 죽은 몸을 다스리지 못합니다. 그러므로

그리스도 예수 안에 사는 사람은 하나님의 의를 위해 살게 됩니다. 6 장의 말씀을 더 읽어가다 보면

사도는 이렇게 말씀하십니다.

In today’s verses, Apostle Paul tells us that when we are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, our old self is crucified with Jesus Christ and we are born again with the resurrected Lord. Because our old self is already dead, our original sin can’t reign in our dead body. Therefore, those who live in Jesus Christ live for the righteousness of God. In Chapter 6, Apostle Paul continues as follows:

그러므로 여러분은 여러분의 지체를 죄에 내맡겨서 불의의 연장이 되게 하지 마십시오. 오히려

여러분은 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아난 사람답게, 여러분을 하나님께 바치고, 여러분의 지체를

의의 연장으로 하나님께 바치십시오. (13 절)

Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. (Verse 13)

때로 우리는 영화 속의 노아와 같은 심정에 빠지곤 합니다. "온 우주의 문제는 인간에게 있고,

인간이 사라지는 것이 해법이 아닌가?" 하는 질문에 빠질 때가 있습니다. ISIS 같은 테러 단체가 행하는

악행을 볼 때도 그렇고, 인간의 탐욕으로 인해 일어나는 엄청난 환경 파괴를 생각해도 그렇고, 모순

투성이의 자신을 볼 때도 그렇습니다.

Sometimes, we feel like Noah; we immerse ourselves in a question, “Isn’t it that all the problems of the universe lie in human beings and the solution to them is the termination of the human race?” We doubt in such a way as we witness the kind of atrocities committed by terrorist organizations like the ISIS, the magnitude of environmental disasters caused by man’s greed, and ourselves full of contradictions.

또 때로 우리는 정반대로 "이만하면 충분하지 않는가?" 라는 생각을 하곤 합니다. 때로 우리

자신이 꽤 괜찮아 보이고, 세상은 매우 아름다워 보이고, 만나는 사람들은 하나같이 선해 보입니다.

그럴 때면 "이대로의 세상도 괜찮지 않을까?" 싶어집니다. 이렇게 선한 뜻을 가진 사람들과 잘 해 보면

우리 손으로 낙원을 세울 수 있지 않을까 싶습니다.

On the contrary, there are times when we wonder, “Isn’t this enough?” At times, we feel quite good

about ourselves, the world looks very beautiful, and every single person we encounter seems well-meaning. Then we ask ourselves, “Isn’t the world nice enough as it is?” We feel that if we make it work with these well-meaning people, we can probably build a paradise with our own hands.

하지만 둘 다 해법은 아닙니다. 하나님께서는 우리에게 있는 악의 현실에 압도 당하지도 말고,

우리에게 있는 선의 가능성을 과신하지도 말라 하십니다. 자신을 믿지 말라는 뜻입니다. 진정한 해결의

길은 예수 그리스도 안에서 우리의 본성이 새로 지어지는 데 있습니다. 예수 그리스도 안에서 옛

사람을 청산하고 새로운 존재로 태어나는 것이 진정한 희망입니다.

However, none of these provide an answer. God tells us not to be overwhelmed by the reality of evil, nor be overly confident about the potentiality of the good in us. This means that we must not trust ourselves. The true way to solve these questions is our nature’s being remade in Jesus Christ. The true meaning of hope is removing our old self and being born as a new person in Jesus Christ.

우리는 지금 추수 감사절을 앞에 두고 있습니다. 부디, 감사절 식탁에서 태초의 에덴을 생각하고

또한 하나님 나라를 생각하는 시간을 가지기 바랍니다. 감사절 식탁에서 누리는 평화와 안식과 기쁨은

인간의 원래 상태가 어떤 것이었는지를 짐작하게 해 줍니다. 그 에덴이 죄로 인해서 깨어졌습니다.

하지만 예수 그리스도께서 에덴을 회복할 길을 활짝 여셨습니다. 다시 지어지는 길, 거듭 나는 길, 새

사람으로 지어지는 길을 여셨습니다.

Thanksgiving Day is around the corner. I pray that you will spend some time thinking of the original Eden and God’s kingdom at the Thanksgiving dinner table. The peace, comfort, and joy that we can enjoy at the Thanksgiving table help us imagine how man’s original state of being was. That Eden was destroyed because of sin. However, Jesus Christ opened wide the door to the restoration of the Eden. He opened the path to be transformed and reborn as a new being.

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 여러분은 거듭 나셨습니까? 그렇습니까? 잘 모르겠습니까? 제가 해답을

알려 드리지요. 예수 그리스도를 주님으로 영접하셨다면 그리고 진실로 그분을 믿고 의지하신다면,

담대하게 그러나 겸손히 "예!"라고 대답하시기 바랍니다. 여러분 같은 마음을 가진 사람들을 위해 바울

사도는 이렇게 말합니다.

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, are you reborn? Are you? Are you not sure? I will answer that for you. If you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord, and if you truly trust and rely on Him, say “Yes”, humbly yet with confidence. To those who have the same hearts, Apostle Paul says the following:

이와 같이 여러분도, 죄에 대해서는 죽은 사람이요, 하나님을 위해서는 그리스도 예수 안에서

살고 있는 사람이라는 것을 알아야 합니다. (6:11)

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (6:11)

"알아야 합니다"라고 번역된 헬라어 '로기조마이'(logizomai)는 '간주하다'(consider),

'계산하다'(calculate)라는 의미입니다. 예수 그리스도를 진실하게 믿고 의지하고 살아가고 있다면 이미

거듭 났다고 '간주하라'는 말입니다. 왜 '간주하라'고 말합니까? 거듭났다는 사실이 잘 믿어지지 않고

실감도 나지 않기 때문입니다. 영적인 사건이기에 육적인 감각으로 확인할 수가 없습니다. 그러므로

그런 일이 이미 일어났다고 받아들이고 그렇게 인정하고 그렇게 살라는 말입니다.

The Greek word “logizomai” means “consider” or “calculate.” This means that if you trust and rely on Jesus Christ in a true sense, you must “consider” that you have been reborn already. Why does he say “consider”? This is because the event of being reborn is hard to believe and can’t seem real. Because it is a spiritual event, we can’t verify it with our physical senses. Therefore, he says that we must accept and recognize that it has happened already and live our lives accordingly.

다시 여쭙겠습니다. 여러분은 거듭 나셨습니까? 그렇게 간주하십시오. 그렇게 인정하십시오.

그렇게 사십시오. 그럴 때 자신도 거듭남의 증거가 드러날 것입니다. 질기도록 들러붙던 죄가 힘 없이

떨어져 나가고, 거룩한 생각이 마음을 채우는 것을 보게 될 것입니다.

Let me ask you again. Are you reborn? Consider you are. Admit that. Live your life accordingly. When you do that, the evidence of your having been reborn will manifest itself. You will witness that the sin that’s been stuck to you so stubbornly will fall off of you and holy thoughts will fill your mind.

진실로 감사할 일은 바로 이 거듭남의 은혜입니다. 진실로 축하할 일은 우리에게 이와 같은

희망을 주셨다는 사실입니다. 이 믿음, 이 은혜, 이 소망을 감사하고 축하하며 살아가는 저와 여러분이

되기를 간절히 기도합니다.

What we must be really grateful for is the grace of our being reborn. What we must really celebrate is the fact that God has given us such hopes. I pray with all my heart that you and I will live in celebration of and with thanks for such faith, grace, and hope.

사랑의 주님,

세상의 죄악에 짓눌리지 않게 하시고

내면의 악에 사로잡히지 않게 하소서.

세상의 아름다움에 취하지 않게 하시고

내면의 선을 과신하지 않게 하소서.

오직 주님 안에 거하여

온전히 거듭난 사람으로 살아가도록

저희를 도우소서.

오직 그것만이 희망이 되게 하시며

오직 그것만이 감사의 조건이 되게 하소서.

God of love,

Don’t let the sin of the world overpower us,

Nor our inner evil overtake us.

Don’t let the beauty of the world intoxicate us,

Nor let us overestimate the good in us.

Help us

Reside only in You

And live as someone completely reborn.

Let that be our only hope.

Let that be the only reason for thanks.
