The first reading tells us that the Wisdom of God has prepared a feast. Wisdom is depicted as a gracious hostess inviting the people to a fine banquet. "Wisdom" becomes the symbolic image of the search for God's will. As this reading suggests, Faith opens up the fonts of wisdom to nourish us. “Wisdom spreads out a banquet to which we all are invited. The meat and wine that she offers is insight and understanding, and we would be fools to turn down her invitation. In the Responsorial Psalm (Ps 34), we thank God for His care and His close association with us His people which invites and enables us to “taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” In the second reading, Paul advises us to show our gratitude to God and to be Spirit-filled with our conversations, always trying to discern and do the will of God. Jesus emphasizes the eternal-life dimensions of eating His Body and drinking his Blood. "Eternal life" is complete and lasting happiness, satisfying our deepest longings and realizing all our dreams. We must become like children to hear and accept this invitation. For in every Eucharist, it is the folly of the Cross that is represented and renewed. To the world, it is foolishness to believe that the crucified Jesus rose from the dead. And for many, as for the crowds in today’s Gospel, it is foolishness - maybe even madness - to believe that Jesus can give us His Flesh to eat. Yet Jesus repeats himself and is emphatic in today’s Gospel. There is repetition of the words “eat” and “drink,” and “my Flesh” and “my Blood.” To accentuate and stress what Jesus asks us to believe, John in these verses uses not the ordinary Greek word for eating but a Greek word – trogein – that refers to a crude kind of eating, almost a gnawing or chewing. When we receive Holy Communion we accept a great challenge. We accept the triumphs and the tragedies, joys and the pains necessary to build up the Kingdom of God wherever we have been called to serve. That is why, at the end of the Mass, we are sent out to announce the Gospel of the Lord through the witness of our service and exemplary lives, radiating Jesus’ love, mercy, forgiveness and spirit of service all around us. What a power we would be for the world around us if each one of us could say that and mean it! 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time 19th August 2018 I Am the Living Bread John 6:51-58

Both Lives Matter For the second time in two years, the Queensland Parliament will debate whether to make abortion legal. The draft bill will allow abortion until the day that a baby is born – late-term abortions will be legal in Queensland as long as two doctors agree that it “in all the circumstances, the termination should be performed”. This will mean that social reasons will be enough for a legal abortion of a full-term baby. We want to ensure that Queenslanders understand this new bill and have time to consider it. We believe both lives matter and the bill should not go ahead. We need your help. Please consider signing the petition in the back of the church today. This form has been sent to us by the Archbishop’s Office. They are collating the information.

VERSE FOR VINNIES Dear Patrons unfortunately due to a computer crash we have lost the accumulation of emails that patrons have given us over the last seven years. We will have to restart building these contacts so patrons can receive notices of the upcoming fund-raising concerts. We would appreciate if patrons would send us an email mentioning Verse for Vinnies so we can include them in our bank of contacts. Our email is [email protected]

Great opportunity - The video of all presentations of the 14th eConference, titled “Synodality in Practice:Listening to the Spirit and Leading Change” is free until August 22. Copy and paste this into your browser https://www.bbi.catholic.edu.au/short-courses/eConference-Video Much of this content is excellent background for when the parish kicks off its plan for responding to the Plenary Council – until this happens, this AFE item will continue to disseminate information, while the website above will give you valuable background information from reputable speakers. 5 presentations and a Q&A session.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge – “Leaders that listen: Synodality in Practice”

Mrs. Lana Turvey-Collins (Plenary Council Facilitator) - “Synodality in Practice: Preparing for the Australian Plenary Council”.

Professor Massimo Faggioli - “Structures of Synodality: Insights from Pope Francis”.

Dr. Gemma Cruz – “Synodality, Community and the Margins’.

Professor Richard Lennan – “Change and the Church’s Tradition”.

Q&A – Some really searching questions for the panel of speakers.

You can access this as often as you like until next Wednesday. After that the access has to be via a DVD purchased from Broken Bay Institute sometime after the middle of September. Peter Pellicaan’s presentation is not until Sept. 12, Daley Centre, 7.30pm to 9pm, but here is some background about him. “After having spent over ten years as a Protestant Pastor, Peter came into the Catholic Church with a fresh enthusiasm for the beauty, goodness and truth found in the Holy Catholic Church. He is passionate about Evangelisation as well as encouraging Catholics to rediscover the wonder of their faith, in order that they might re-engage in it and be able to articulate it for others”.

Amidst Pope Francis' call to welcome, protect, promote and integrate migrants and refugees, we need to pray for many asylum seekers in Australia presently.

Recently the Australian Government announced it would be cutting basic material and case management support for those seeking asylum, while living here. This month approximately 1500 individuals and families will lose their income support from the Australian Government, with an estimated 5000 more at the end of 2018. Asylum seekers have no other right to access life sustaining payments, due to their citizenship status. In this situation, and unable to find work, how would you look after yourself or your family? How would you keep a roof over your head? How would you educate yourself to communicate in English (especially to find work)? How would you cope with the emotional affects of your trauma, without access to mental health care? It will create a desperate situation for many. You can take part in a National Week of Prayer and Action with CAPSA (The Catholic Alliance for People Seeking Asylum), which seeks to promote dignity for refugees in Australian and on nearby shores. Lord, No one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care. In your kindness watch over refugees and asylum seekers, those separated from their loved ones, those who are lost, and those who have been exiled from their homes. Bring them safely to the place where they long to be, and help us always to show your kindness to strangers and those in need. Australian Catholic Social Justice Council Carers Connect Morning-Tea! The St William's Social Justice Group invites all carers to a relaxing, friendly morning tea, from 10am on Wednesday 22 August in the Daley Centre. A VOCATION VIEW: John's Gospel reveals God's promise

of the Word made flesh. This is

revealed through the sacrifice made

by Christ: "I am the living bread,

come down from heaven ... the

bread I give is my flesh for the life of

the world ...". Do this in memory of

Him.

A teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with their class of children. After explaining

to "honour" thy Father and thy Mother, the teacher asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"

Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."
