Year 2 Topic Plan 8 – 12 June 2020
NATURE DETECIVES - RIDDLES
Monday
This week the focus is on riddles.
• Please have a look ‘1 – Riddle powerpoint’
in the resource pack. Talk about how the
riddle is set out – it is all about the clues in
the poem and guessing/realising what it is.
Here is Mrs Ribak’s favourite riddle –
I am a car’s leg.
How round and rubbery I am.
Look out for me and my three friends.
Am I a wheel or an engine?
You can send your answers to Mrs Ribak using the school’s email address.
Parents – think of an animal and say one to your child.
Can they guess what it is? Use these sentence starters…
I am… I have… It is… You can… It has…
• Explore the ‘2 – What am I powerpoint’.
Can you solve the riddles?
Now ask your child to think of their own animal. You could put out some
plastic animals or use the animals below…
Ensure they use the sentence starters and even add some adjectives eg: I
have long, brown arms. You can see my bumpy, green skin.
Can they think of another animal? Encourage your child to put the hardest
clue first eg: I live in Africa and India rather than I have a long, sharp, trunk.
Tuesday
Your child will now begin to plan their own riddle.
• Look at the different animals in your resource pack ‘3 – animal
pictures’. Do you remember what are noun phrases?
Can you describe these animals using extended noun phrases?
Write them down and share them with your grown up.
• See our ‘4 – adverbs powerpoint’ and list different adverbs you can
think of when describing animals.
• Pick an animal from the resource pack or an animal of your choice.
Use the ‘5 – animal riddle worksheet’ or a piece of paper.
Use the following titles to describe your animal and provide specific clues:
noun phrases, verbs, adverbs.
Remember what makes a good riddle. Use the worksheet to draft your own
riddle.
• Remember to check your capital letters and full stops.
Wednesday
Today recap on what makes a good riddle.
Today you will be editing your riddle draft and writing out your final copy.
Today we want you to use adverbs AND scientific vocabulary.
Can you guess what creature it is? You can email your answer to the school.
Here is some scientific vocabulary you can use when describing your
creature:
Get your riddle draft you did yesterday. Using a coloured pencil or a pen, can
you EDIT your work by adding more adverbs and scientific vocabulary?
You can use a scrap paper if you prefer.
We would like you to re-read and improve your work. You can add more lines
to your riddle too.
Don’t forget to end your riddle with a question:
What am I?
mammal, reptile, insect, arachnid, diet,
habitat, appearance, invertebrates
Here is Mrs Ribak’s favourite riddle:
I am an invertebrate and I live in the sea.
I can squeeze quickly into small spaces.
I have 3 hearts.
My legs are called tentacles.
What am I?
Now that you have edited your work, you can write your final copy in any way
you like.
You can print your riddle template ‘6 - riddle template’ if you like, or you can
create your own riddle booklet as described below:
1. Fold a paper in half.
2. Write the question on the front page.
3. Write the riddle inside.
4. Draw your animal on the back of your folded card.
Read your riddle to your family and friends. Did they guess your animal
correctly? Did you give good specific clues? Is there anything you could add /
improve?
Don’t forget to email your riddle to us
I live in the sea.
I hunt on icebergs.
I am very powerful.
I give birth to cubs.
I give birth to cubs.
