flights to Düsseldorf from many UK

the day of your visit.

with prestige motorhomes. But that’s

little surprise when one considers the

company’s heritage and its principles

of creating motorhomes that are

lightweight, safe, strong, technologically

advanced and desirable.

To find out more, we go behind the scenes to

speak to Oliver Reuther, HYMER’s Product

Manager, and ask him to explain what

makes a HYMER so special and so desirable.

“All our motorhomes are developed on

the principle that HYMER customers are

entitled to expect a high-quality vehicle

with superior comfort, which represents a

worthwhile economic investment,” he says.

“All HYMER motorhomes are equipped with

extensive safety features and are constantly

striving to set new standards in all areas,

especially in terms of weight and design.”

These principles are engrained throughout

the company. “Every single person in the

company does their very best to make a

new HYMER owner a very happy person,”

says Oliver. “A HYMER motorhome is

definitely more than just a motorhome… it

is a very, very good feeling.”

One of HYMER’s unique – and well

established – technologies is its PUAL

construction. It was introduced 20 years

ago and is the envy of other manufacturers,

as Oliver explains. “PUAL construction

combines the perfect insulation features

while eliminating old issues like water

damage (it does not suck in liquid). In

addition, it is very lightweight and has

been further developed to reduce any

wooden parts inside, used for stabilisation,

etc. Nowadays, many other suppliers have

copied this but many still have polystyrene

within their walls.”

Because of HYMER’s advanced insulation,

its motorhomes are perfect for year-round

touring. As Oliver points out, its motorhomes

also come with heating systems (usually

Truma Combi 6 as standard and Alde as an

option) that have been optimised thanks to

intelligent positioning of the heat outlet

points. In addition, its motorhomes have

heated and insulated water tanks and

significant work is done to eradicate cold

spots, even in the cab. “We also use special

insulated window frames to make sure the

interior feels warm and cosy, even on a

grey, rainy winter’s day.”

Weight is a massive issue across the

industry. Buyers rightly want more

features, equipment and luxury but all

within a motorhome that weighs under 3.5

tonnes. With its latest model, the B-Class

DynamicLine, HYMER went to extraordinary

lengths to minimise weight. “The chassis

frame has been optimised (lower profile),

the furniture is all newly designed to reduce

weight and even the handles are lighter

while looking larger and more robust. If

you just make a 100g lighter handle, you

will save 1-2kg per motorhome. And all

these bits and pieces throughout every

department help to reduce the weight.

The more features become standard, the

lighter parts have to be without lacking on

quality.”

Of course, new technologies play a huge

part in every new HYMER. It was a pioneer

of things we now take for granted, like

double floors with heated tanks, large

garages and pull-down beds in A-class

motorhomes, introduced over 30 years ago.

Looking at its latests model, the new

B-Class, it developed its own bespoke

headlight with full LED, which gives a

much clearer view of the road at night.

It also developed its own waste water

technology, which means a driver can now

easily position the motorhome over a drain

thanks to low-level cameras and then, at

the flick of a switch in the cab, can drain

the waste tank.

From the very start of the company, HYMER

has championed safety, as Oliver explains.

“HYMER has always been concerned about

safe driving. This was driven personally by

Erwin Hymer. It was the first to carry out

crash tests, it was the first to introduce rear

seatbelts and have twin airbags as standard.

Also automotive safety features like ABS,

EDB or ESP including ASR and Traction+

are standard on every Hymer. We are now

looking at more ways to improve safety

such as seatbelt reminders and driving

systems like tyre pressure monitoring,

lane assistant or automatic light and rain

sensors. With Mercedes-based HYMERs you

even have its brilliant crosswind assist.”

It’s little surprise then that many buyers

enjoy high residual values – their

motorhome is worth more than expected

– when they come to sell their HYMER.

“Having a HYMER means knowing that

– in a high-end, quality motorhome. And

The HYMER Van 314, first of a new range,

is now based on a Fiat Ducato cab with

an Al-Ko chassis. The range has already

being extended, with the 6m single bed

layout 374 launched shortly after, and

two Mercedes versions (Van S) that have

just been announced.

The HYMER Van 314 is not only narrow, at

just 2.22m wide, it is also short to the point

of being stubby, being just 5.45m long. It’s

light, too, barely touching the 3.5-tonnes

mark (with a correspondingly massive

payload). Yet it features exactly the same

timber-free PUAL bodywork construction as

all of its bigger stablemates. This technology

was first introduced by HYMER in 1978,

decades before other manufacturers started

getting on the timber-free bandwagon. All

this and the design of the Van means that

it’s roomier and better insulated than a

panel van conversion.

Unlike some coachbuilts, the wheels of this

vehicle really are at each corner, making

it that much easier to pilot. As a HYMER

product, you can also expect it to be free of

the kinds of rattles that still blight so many

motorhomes. On top of that, the Fiat base

comes with LED daytime running lights,

Traction Plus and Hill Holder and more, as

per all current Hymer products.

The HYMER Van 314 SL has a starting price

of just £43,750, although you might need

to add a few optional extras to bring it up

to a level of comfort you are used to. The

Comfortline Pack, for example, includes

cab air-conditioning, cruise control, painted

front bumper, a window and flyscreen on

the habitation door, an overcab sunroof, an

85-litre compressor fridge, a second 95Ah

leisure battery, an 18A charger upgrade,

and – perhaps most crucially of all – the

third and fourth travel seats, with three-

point belts. It costs £2,460. Note that 2017

models will include belted seats in the rear

as standard. You might also want to add a

TV bracket (£170), a carpet (£300), underfloor

storage (£420), and possibly upgrade to a

Truma Combi 4EH heater (£420).

The washroom manages to pack a lot into a

small space, too.

The 314 sleeps two, although there is

the option of a 1.40m x 0.72m bed in the

lounge (for an extra £220). The standard

transverse double is set over a garage,

which has the bonus of three-way access –

four if you include access via the wardrobe.

A lower bed version is also available, with

correspondingly reduced garage space, but

there is easier access.

In short, this is a vehicle that may sway

you away from a van conversion. It’s hardly

surprising that it’s the Compact Motorhome

of the Year 2016.

HYMER first brought out a model with the apt title of Van in 2005. It was a narrower than usual motorhome based on a Ford Transit. A decade later, it’s back and things have changed

The very first A-class Hymermobil – back

in 1974 – was based on a Mercedes. It set

the trend for today’s top-end motorhomes

with the cab completely integrated into the

living area and the unique frontal look of

an A-class.

In the ’90s, the relationship blossomed

further with the launch of the S-Class, based

on the first-generation Sprinter chassis,

while StarLine models continue to wear the

famous three-pointed star to this day.

Then, just a few years ago, the low-profile

ML-T was launched (joined less than a year

later by an A-class version, the ML-I).

There’s now five models in the range, all

with fixed beds starting at the 6.36m and

6.98m-long 540 and 560 with transverse

double bed. If you want singles, then you

can choose between the 580 (6.98m) and

the 620 at 7.79m. The 630 offers an island

bed in the same length as the 620.

ML-T successfully combines Mercedes’

clever technology and HYMER’s innovative

lightweight construction to give a vehicle

that is safe, agile and comfortable, both on

the road and on site.

With a width of just 2.22m, this motorhome

opens up a whole new horizon of adventure,

while the choice of powerful Mercedes-

based engines, the excellent automatic

gearbox and, more recently, the additional

of a four-wheel drive option (only available

on the 560 and 580 models) will satisfy

most driver needs.

Not all features are options, for example

the crosswind assist is fittes to the ML-T as

standard. This feature, when travelling above

50mph, will correct the course of the vehicle

automatically in the face of sidewind gusts,

whether that’s on a bridge or overtaking a

lorry. Adaptive ESP is also fitted as standard,

a feature that combines ABS, traction

control, electronic brake force distribution,

brake assist and hill start assist.

If that’s not enough, check out the driver

assistance package, which rolls in a host

of other features to take the stress out of

driving motorhomes on today’s busy roads.

Collision Prevention Assist can detect if

your motorhome is too close to another

vehicle, and helps with emergency braking

if needed. There’s also a lane departure

warning system, full beam assistant and

automatic headlights with light and rain

sensors.

Inside, all models have a flat floor from cab

backwards, meaning constant headroom

throughout and no trip hazards in the night,

while 142-litre fridges are standard and beds

come with multi-zone cold foam mattresses

and breathable mattress toppers.

Since the first HYMER B-Class was

launched 35 years ago, some 58,000

motorhomers have bought one. And now

the latest incarnation is here.

As Bernhard Kibler, HYMER Managing

Director, said at the launch of this, the

tenth generation B-Class, “For us this is

a special day today as we present you the

new generation of our main product – our

favourite child – the B-Class. As the E-Class

is for Mercedes, the Golf for Volkswagen,

the B-Class is HYMER’s main series.”

Confusingly for us Brits, it is actually

an A-class coachbuilt. But, what isn’t

confusing is that this new B-Class has

taken two years to develop and features

new technologies and designs that make it

well worth the wait.

One of the key benchmarks for HYMER

was to ensure all the B-Class models

sit comfortably in the 3.5-tonne weight

category meaning they can all be driven on

standard car licences, have ample – and in

some cases huge – payloads and still retain

the high-end luxuries that define a top-end

A-class.

Such was the focus on weight that HYMER’s

engineers looked at every aspect of the

design and shaved off weight wherever

possible. For example, they have redesigned

the chrome cupboard handles (they’re now

hollow) and even the unseen cabinetry

joints (they’re dowel-free) to save a couple

of kilograms.

But it wasn’t just weight. The new B-Class

DynamicLine is instantly recognisable as

the latest – and most advanced – HYMER

motorhome. Particularly distinctive is

the new front with its unique full-LED

headlights, which have been designed

exclusively in conjunction with automotive

giant, Hella. These new headlights feature

LED daytime running lights as standard and

come with the option of full-LED headlights

including LED fog lights, which is a first for

a motorhome.

Other front-end changes to the B-Class

DynamicLine included a modified radiator

grille (the new Euro VI engines need more

air) and the front windscreen, which has

been enlarged.

Initially, there are two models available,

which range in length from sub-6m to

sub-7m. Two more models will be launched

within weeks. All sit on the Euro VI Fiat

Ducato on an AL-KO low-frame chassis with

independent suspension.

Classically understated, this is the tenth generation of HYMER’s iconic A-class motorhome

The rear kitchen B444 DL

The highlight of the initial two-model

range for many British buyers is an all-new

end-kitchen layout, not available in any other

HYMER and suited to British tastes.

This B444 DL (DynamicLine) is a two-berth

with a rear kitchen, washroom with separate

shower and a front lounge that features

a drop-down over-cab bed. The L-shaped

kitchen in this 5.99m model is huge and

will make even the most demanding chef

happy. While the front lounge has few

surprises, the drop-down bed does as it is

available as twin singles. This innovative

touch means you can have a large double

as normal or use two pull-out extensions to

create twin longitudinal singles that allow

undisturbed sleep, even if your partner

needs a night time visit to the loo or wants

to get up early to make a brew.

Unsurprisingly, while the twin-single drop-

down bed is an option, almost without

exception, all British HYMER dealers have

ordered their 444s with this included.

Thanks to the focus on weight saving, the

B444 DL has a huge payload – 630kg up to

almost a tonne on the heavier 3.85-tonne

optional chassis – and an equally huge

garage with internal loading dimensions

of 58cm wide by 122cm high, which is tall

enough for a bike or two. The garage also

has an impressive payload of 350kg, which

can be upgraded to 450kg.

British prices have yet to be confirmed, but

it starts at just shy of €78,000 in Europe.

Four-berth B588 DL

Another model revealed at the launch was

the four-berth B588 DL – a 6.99m long and

2.22m wide A-class. This has twin fixed

single beds at the rear above the garage

and a drop-down above-cab double, which

is also available as the twin-single set-up

mentioned above.

This slightly heavier model (2,990kg) still

has an impressive 510kg payload on the

3.5-tonne chassis and has an even larger

99cm wide garage, which can carry up to

450kg and can be accessed from massive

exterior doors on either side of the

motorhome as well as from inside.

Again, UK prices have not yet been

confirmed but European prices for the B588

DL start at just shy of €83,000.

Across the range

While weight was clearly a major focus

for HYMER, it hasn’t ignored the comfort

and technology touches that make living

with an A-class so enjoyable. As already

mentioned, there are those, first-for-a-

motorhome, Hella headlights.

HYMER has also modified the radio and

entertainment system so that the radio

automatically switches its power source to

the habitation battery when the engine is

off and vice versa.

This new smart multimedia system

also allows the use of several medias

simultaneously. For example, it

Whether dining, reading or chatting with friends, there is plenty of space for relaxation

The second new model, the B588 DL, provides a practical four-berth with fixed single beds, ideal for a family holiday or for a couple looking for spacious accommodation

The best possible comfort in every detail: wide entrance door, level living area floor, heated double floor, night lighting, pi-lot seats, large beds and much more

automatically detects the current usage

and activates the relevant loudspeakers

accordingly. That way one person can watch

the news on TV in the living area while their

partner listens to music in the bedroom.

Another notable touch available across all

the B-Class DynamicLine range is a service

camera. All models come with a rear-view

camera that acts as a third mirror via the

central dash screen and an additional

reversing camera but, as an optional extra,

you can have this new service camera

which allows the driver to see, via the dash

screen, when the waste service pipe is

positioned over a drain.

At the flick of a button the waste water

can then be emptied. It’s a neat touch

and this means you’ll never have to leave

the cab to empty your grey water and,

while the camera is optional, the electric

cab-controlled drain switch is standard.

Of course, as you’d expect from a high-end

HYMER, there are loads of other standard

fit touches like both water tanks being

insulated and heated, a new double floor

system that does all you expect but also

means the wheelarch doesn’t intrude into

the shower area and super-lightweight

furniture and fittings that appear not have

lost any of their quality or strength but have

led to significant overall weight savings.

HYMER has also developed its famous

PUAL body construction, which means all

models now come with a GRP lightweight

floor, GRP roof coating and the improved

body shell.

Safety has always been a HYMER hallmark

and this continues with the new B-Class

DynamicLine. Twin airbags, ESP including

Traction+, electrically adjustable heated

wing mirrors and LED daytime running

lights are all standard, as are large double

garage doors, a comfort sleeping system

with cup slatted frame and multi-zone cold

foam mattress and Aguti pilot seats.

Other standard features include an LED

awning light (all interior lights are LED

also) with rain shield, concertina fabric cab

blinds, soft-close and servo soft-close (in the

kitchen) cupboards and drawers, a large 80 x

50cm panoramic rooflight with LED lighting

in living area and a Truma blown-air heater

in rear bedroom (Alde adjustable hot water

heater is also available in rear bedroom).

Options that are worth considering are the

aforementioned single drop-down beds, the

LED headlights and service camera and a

new sliding shelf for gas bottles.

In some models you can opt for a fifth seat

and all are available with three packs: the

Design, which gives you HYMER’s exclusive

alloy wheels and high-gloss radiator grille

with chrome trim strips; the Power pack,

which gives a second and third battery,

inverter and additional sockets; the Alde

Arctic pack, which provides an enhanced

hot water heating system; and the Comfort

pack, with special springs for the front axle,

automatic cab air-con (with pollen filter),

cruise control, driver’s door with electric

window and a habitation door with window

and flyscreen.

In 1923, Alfons Hymer started a craft

business, working as a wheelwright and

coachbuilder. Around 30 years later, a

young engineer, Erwin Hymer, followed

his parents’ calling and began working

in his father’s repair shop in the southern

German town of Bad Waldsee in 1956.

Just one year later, he developed the

first caravan – the original ‘Troll’ – in

collaboration with engineer Erich Bachem.

And thus began a new era!

It wasn’t until 1972 that the first HYMER

motorhome made it onto the production

line as a series. In the last 42 years, the

HYMER name has become synonymous

with high quality motorhomes, with 2014

making the production of the 150,000th
