manufacturers trying to reach sustainability goals profitably, and respond to demands from retailers for packaging reduction, may want to consider losing some weight.

Clariant’s Masterbatches engineers have developed a new generation of Hydrocerol® chemical foaming agents (CFAs) for plastic packaging. When incorporated during plastics processing forms microscopic air pockets in the plastic resin, reducing the amount of plastic needed to make the package without compromising performance or aesthetics.

Major consumer brand companies are aggressively seeking ways to improve the environ-mental profile of plastics packaging especially if they can do so while maintaining profit-ability. At Clariant Masterbatches we partner with our customers and show them different ways to realize their objectives, providing a complete business case analysis for the total package, including materials, manufacturing efficiency, productivity and overall improve-ments while using Hydrocerol.

Working with brand owners and their converting partners, Clariant make it possible to reduce package weight by up to 20% while maintaining impact strength, integrity during shipment and compliance with requirements for direct food contact.

sustainability benefits extend beyond weight reductionMaterial savings is not the only benefit. Lighter weight packaging is easier to trans-port so shipping costs and fuel consumption can be reduced. There are significant advantages in processing too.

HYDROCEROL masterbatches are en-dothermic chemical foaming agents. The chemical reaction that creates the foam absorbs heat so that less heat needs to be removed from the polymer after molding and processing cycles can be shortened. Overall productivity can be increased by as much as 20%.

The improved CFA technology used in the today’s HYDROCEROL masterbatches now makes it possible to achieve a highly uniform structure of very small cells. This improvement enables Hydrocerol to be applied in much thinner wall applications such as Consumer Care products providing uniform and smooth surface finishing while maintaining or even improving mechanical strength.
