ASU’s EventOn April 29, 2014, the Arab Student Union (ASU) at Mo-raine Valley Community College hosted the second annual Arab American Academic Excellence Scholarship event. This event celebrates a scholarship that the Arab Student Union established to help student of Arab descent. Now in its second year, the Arab American Academic Excellence Scholarship awarded three de-serving students scholarships that will help fund their college

education at Moraine Valley. See-ing a need to support their fellow students, the Arab Student Union decided awarding scholarships to students who were not only in fi-nancial need, but also excelled ac-ademically was the best way to do so. The first year the scholarship was offered (2013-2014), there were 12 applicants and in the sec-ond year(2014-2015), the appli-cations increased to 24. Although the club would love to award scholarships to all applicants, the process is competitive and the Arab Student Union was able to award two $1,000 scholarships for the upcoming school year as well as an additional $500 book schol-arship. One of the scholarship

winners who attended the event, named Yazan personally thanked the Arab Student Union for their generosity. As a full-time student, Yazan works two jobs to support his family while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and is working towards his goal of being a neurosurgeon. To raise funds for the scholarship, the Arab Student Union solicited donations from alumni and com-munity members and held fun-draisers at the college such as a falafel sandwich sale. The event was held at the Moraine Valley Business and Conference Center and was attended by students, alumni, community members, and Moraine Valley administra-tors. The featured speaker for the event was Mohammed Abu-nada, Vice President of Health-care Banking at Standard Bank and member of the Moraine Val-ley Foundation Alumni Advisory Board. Abunada spoke about his experience as a former student at Moraine Valley and shared mo-tivational words, with special at-tention given to the students in the audience. The scholarship event not only celebrated the establishment of the scholarship, but also recog-nized Arab American alumni of Moraine Valley as well as com-munity groups who partnered

with or supported the Arab Stu-dent Union this past year. Among the groups recognized during the event were the Arab American Business and Professional As-sociation and Team Palestine for PCRF. The Arab American Busi-ness and Professional Association hosted a workshop in conjunc-tion with the Arab Student Union earlier this year focusing on how students can market themselves for job preparation after gradu-ation. Team Palestine showed their support to the Arab Student Union by making a collective team donation to the scholarship fund. The Arab Student Union volunteers for and co-sponsors the annual Team Palestine Run for Peace which is held on the Moraine Valley campus every September. The Arab Student Union plans to continue to raise funds for the scholarship and it is the hope of the club to help their fellow students for many years to come. For more in-formation about the Arab Student Union or make a donation to the scholarship fund, please contact ASU advisor, Nina Shoman-Dajani at [email protected] or 708-974-5229.
