The ski club’s Executive Committee (Officers, Board of Directors, and Committee Chairs) met on Nov 12 for its annually required meeting to discuss a pre-determined agenda. To assist with keeping us on-track and focused, we recruited a facilitator with impeccable leadership skills: Stephanie Radin, a program leader with Cornell Cooperative Extension The leading question was, “Where do we want this club to be in 2020?”, along with other crucial topics that included: what are we doing now that we can do better; new member development; and member retention. Without question, we need to “think younger” in our communications, planning, marketing, trips, events, etc. It is where our future needs to be younger and more exciting for all of us. ABOUT OUR MEMBERS by Frank van Zanten

"32,966. Lorna Thompson, F69. 4:48:32" With these few letters and numbers the New York Times (Nov 3, page F22) recognized our ski colleague's awesome completion of her 7th NYC marathon (14th lifetime). -- Lorna started running in her forties. Her entry in this year's race was in support of Hudson River Housing for which her effort raised about $3,000. Congratulations, Lorna, on your achievement and for supporting such a worthy organization.

Jim Gahn, HVSC Treasurer, recently spent a weekend demonstrating his proficiency in handling a chainsaw, a US Forest Service requirement for periodic re certification which makes him eligible to do chainsaw work as required for maintenance on the Appalachian Trail. The Duchess County trail segment for which Jim has maintained responsibility for four years runs from Stormville Mtn. Road in East Fishkill north to Mount Egbert and a short distance further to the Morgan Stewart Shelter.

Herb Eschbach was pictured and quoted in a major Veterans Day article titled "Veterans Share Their Experiences" (Poughkeepsie Journal, Nov. 10, page 3A). Herb served in the US. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5444 Town of Amenia.

Julia Rosenblatt will once again be writing her weekly ski column for the Poughkeepsie Journal. Check the Thursday Sport section, starting Thursday, December 4.

Ski/Ride Improvement Days The Club offers free lessons from Certified Ski Instructors to members and their guests as a benefit of membership. These lessons are designed to meet the needs of beginner through upper intermediate skiers/riders. If you wish to take advantage of one of these events, please contact Mark Searle (phone: 845-471-6402 or [email protected]) so that adequate instructors can be made available to meet your needs. Discounted Flex Tickets for all dates are available at Potter Brothers ski shops and the programs begin at 9 AM unless otherwise noted. Calling All Instructors

Ski/Ride Improvement Days With the rapid approach of the ski season, it’s not too soon to begin to think about the Ski/Ride Improvement Days. A benefit of membership in the HVSC is that throughout the ski season knowledgeable and experienced member-instructors offer lessons to skiers and riders of all levels. However, before that can begin the group of instructors needs to meet and establish their availability for the season. Therefore, if you’ve served as a ski/snowboard instructor for the club in the past or are interested in becoming an instructor this season, please contact Mark Searle at [email protected] or (845)471-6402. The objective here is to assemble a group of instructors who will be the leaders of the upcoming ski/ride improvement days.

Lift Ticket Lotto The club holds Lift Ticket Lotto contests at each club meeting during the ski season as a means of generating some revenue for the club. Several local ski areas have given the club lift tickets in exchange for ads in the newsletter. We will be giving away lift tickets to different ski areas at each meeting from October through March. All you need to do to get in on the hot action of this cool deal is to be sure to buy Lift Ticket Lotto tickets at the next meeting – don’t get left out in the cold. When you win and later use a lift ticket from Lift Ticket Lotto, please take a moment the thank the ski area for their support of the HVSC. Ticket prices for the Lotto will be: 1 for $1, 6 for $5, and 15 for $10. There will be “LTL” drawings at both December meetings with tickets from Butternut, Catamount, Mount Snow, Catamount, Jiminy Peak, Mount Snow, Plattekill and Windham.

SkiDUCK (SKIing and snowboarding for Disabled and Underprivileged Children and older Kids) is a new, grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of disabled and underprivileged children by sharing the joys of skiing and snowboarding. SkiDUCK is committed to partnering with local organizations

with similar goals of serving disabled and underprivileged children. And in areas where these needs aren't yet being served, we seek to establish a sustainable model of service with

local resources and volunteers. If your community or organization is interested in partnering with SkiDUCK to establish or enhance a

program to help children onto the slopes, give us a QUACK! * For even more information on Ski DUCK, visit the May or June 2012 HVSC newsletter (on the www.HudsonValleySkiClub.org website, and click Newsletters.)

SkiDUCK...

Our club has collected a substantial amount of ski apparel and equipment over the past year. Last September Cheryl Corbett, Northeast Area Director, spoke at our meeting and was presented with a "First Installment" of donations. Since September additional donations have been collected that far exceed the First Installment. We have had and will continue having the “Blue Barrel” at our meetings as an ongoing project for the club for you to add your no longer needed gloves, mitts, jackets, suits, pants, socks, thermal layers, hats, neck warmers, helmets, boots, poles etc. Periodically we will box up the goods and send them on to SkiDUCK.

The season is almost here.

As the 2014-15 ski season draws closer, there are two things that will be very important to our club. First we would like all of our members to circulate the club brochures. They should be placed in as many outlets as possible. A supply will be available at our club meetings. In addition to the brochures, the club “card” is another way of spreading the word. Second, and this is new, the Hudson Valley Ski Club has joined the social media group Meetup. The idea behind this venture is to reach as many potential new members as possible. Each club meeting is announced with a short description of the meeting agenda. We would all of our present members to join by going to meetup.com. So far we have reached 50 potential new members. It is also important to remember when new people attend our meetings to welcome they as warmly as possible. They might be the future of our club. Craig Goldstein – Marketing Chairperson

ADULT SKI & SNOWBOARD RACE LEAGUE

CATAMOUNT, Hillsdale, NY ~~~ www.catamountski.com (518) 325-3200

I’m pleased to announce that the ADULT SKI & SNOWBOARD RACE LEAGE is back for another season and everyone is invited to participate. Last year we Did Not race due lack of interest/commitment. We need at least five (5) club members to commit for a period of six consecutive weeks in order to qualify as a team. Let’s see some new (and old) members join this year so we can compete. Team Ski / Board Racing is on Wednesday Nights for six consecutive weeks beginning in early January 2015. As noted above we need at least FIVE racers to participate as a TEAM. The cost will be $100.00 per person. This will include your lift ticket, race fee, awards and banquet at the end of the season (a portion of the cost will be paid by the club). We usually meet at Catamount at 6:30 pm and racing should begin about 7:00 pm. This is a GS course and includes two timed runs. In past years over 50 skiers participated on some nights. The deadline to register is 12/31/13. I would like to see some new faces; especially some of the newer members. If anyone would like to provide some training or instruction or share/offer some of their racing expertise please join us. We usually car pool from the Red Oaks Mill area on race nights. The Season Finale is the annual President’s Race in late March 2015 (date pending) presented by the New Jersey Ski Council (NJSC) at Hunter Mountain. Anyone who has ever participated in this event can attest to its success. This race is open to all HVSC members (children are also allowed to participate). Further details about this event will appear in upcoming newsletters and announced at future meetings. These are all ON-SNOW events (unlike Friday Night Race Training) and open to all levels of skiers and boarders, men and women, from beginners to experts. All HVSC members are invited and encouraged to participate. It is a great opportunity to meet and ski with some of your fellow club members while improving your skiing skills and technique. This weekly event is meant to be FUN, so come on out and enjoy the thrills and spills that racing has to offer. Any other racing events that come up during the year will be announced at the meetings, appear in the newsletter or will be posted on the website. By Tom Pompeii
