SAFETY RULES

WARNING:   Always disconnectspark plug wire and place wire where it can-not contact spark plug to prevent accidentalstarting when setting up, transporting, ad-

justing or making repairs except carburetoradjustments.Because a chain saw is a high-speed wood-cutting tool, special safety precautions mustbe observed to reduce the risk of accidents.Careless or improper use of this tool cancause serious injury.

PLAN AHEADS   Read this manual carefully until you com-

pletely understand and can follow all safetyrules, precautions, and operating instruc-tions before attempting to use the unit.

S   Restrict the use of your saw to adultuserswho understand and can follow safetyrules, precautions, and operating instruc-tions found in this manual.

S   Wear protectivegear. Always usesteel-toedsafety footwear with non-slip soles; snug-fit-ting clothing; heavy-duty, non-slip gloves;eye protection such as non-fogging, ventedgoggles or face screen; an approved safetyhard hat; and sound barriers (ear plugs ormufflers) to protect your hearing. Regularusers should have hearing checked regular-ly as chain saw noise can damage hearing.Secure hair above shoulder length.

S   Keep all parts of your body away from the

chain when the engine is running.S   Keep children, bystanders, and animals aminimum of 30 feet (10meters) away fromthe work area. Do not allow other peopleor animals to be near the chain saw whenstarting or operating the chain saw.

S   Do not handle or operate a chain sawwhen youarefatigued, ill, orupset, or ifyouhave taken alcohol, drugs, or medication.

You must be in good physical conditionand mentally alert. Chain saw work isstrenuous. If you have any condition thatmight be aggravated by strenuous work, check with your doctor before operating achain saw.

S   Carefully planyour sawing operation in ad-vance. Donot startcuttinguntil youhaveaclearwork area, secure footing, and, ifyouare felling trees, a planned retreat path.

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY S   Donot operate a chain sawwith onehand.

Serious injury to the operator, helpers, by-standers or any combination of these per-sons may result from one-handed opera-tion. A chain saw is intended fortwo-handed use.

S   Operatethe chain saw only in a well-venti-

lated outdoor area.S  Do not operate saw from a ladder or in a

tree.S  Make sure the chain will not make contact

with any object while starting the engine.Never try to start the saw when the guidebar is in a cut.

S   Do not put pressure on the saw at the endof the cut. Applying pressure can causeyou to lose control when the cut is com-pleted.

S   Stop the engine before setting the sawdown.

S  Do not operate a chain saw that is dam-aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-pletely and securely assembled. Alwaysreplace bar, chain, hand guard, or chainbrake immediatelyif it becomes damaged, broken or is otherwise removed.

S   With the engine stopped, hand carry thechain saw with the muffler away fromyourbody, and the guide bar and chain to therear, preferably covered with a scabbard.

MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDERS   Haveall chain sawservice performed by a

qualified service dealer with the exceptionof the items listed in the maintenance sec-tion ofthis manual. For example,if improp-er tools areused to remove or hold the fly-wheel whenservicingthe clutch, structuraldamage to the flywheel can occur andcause the flywheel to burst.

S   Make certain the saw chain stops movingwhen the throttle trigger is released. Forcorrection, refer to CARBURETOR AD-JUSTMENTS.

S

Never modify your saw in any way.S   Keepthe handles dry, clean, andfree of oilor fuel mixture.

S   Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-teners securely tightened.

S  Use only HusqvarnaR   accessories andreplacement parts as recommended.

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTIONS   Do not smoke while handling fuel or while

operating the s aw.S   Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in

the areas where fuel is mixed or poured. There should be nosmoking, open flames,or workthat couldcause sparks. Allow en-gine to cool before refueling.

S  Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area onbare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, wellventilated place; and use an approved, marked container for all fuel purposes.Wipe up all fuel spills before starting saw.

S   Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) from fuel-ing site before starting engine.

S  Turn the engine off and let saw cool in anon-combustible area, not on dry leaves, straw, paper, etc. Slowly remove fuel capand refuel unit.

S   Storetheunit andfuel in anareawhere fuelvapors cannot reach sparks or openflames fromwater heaters, electric motorsor switches, furnaces, etc.

KICKBACK

WARNING:   Avoid kickback whichcan result in serious injury.  Kickback is thebackward, upwardor sudden forwardmotionof the guide bar occurring when the sawchain near the uppertip ofthe guidebarcon-tacts any object such as a log or branch, orwhen the wood closes in and pinches thesawchainin the cut. Contacting a foreignob-

ject in the wood can also result in loss of chain saw control.S   Rotational Kickback canoccur when the

moving chain contacts an object at theup-per tip of the guide bar. This contact cancause the chain to dig into the object, which stops the chain for an instant. Theresult is a lightning fast, reverse reactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and back to-

ward the operator.S   Pinch-Kickback can occur when the thewood closes in and pinches the movingsaw chain in the cut along the top of theguide bar and the saw chain is suddenlystopped. This sudden stopping of thechain results in a reversal of the chainforce used to cut wood and causes thesawto movein the opposite directionof thechain rotation. The saw is driven straightback toward the operator.

S   Pull-In   can occur when the moving chaincontacts a foreign object in the wood in thecut along the bottom ofthe guide bar and thesaw chain is suddenly stopped. This suddenstopping pulls the saw forward and awayfrom the operator and could easily cause theoperator to lose control of the saw.

Avoid Pinch--Kickback:

S  Be extremely aware of situations or ob-structions thatcan causematerial to pinchthe top of or otherwise stop the chain.

S  Do not cut more than one log at a time.S   Do not twist the saw as the bar is with-

drawn from an undercut when bucking.

Avoid Pull--In:S   Always begin cutting with theengine at full

speed and the saw housing against wood.S   Use wedges made of plastic or wood.

Never use metal to hold the cut open.

Kickback Path

 Avoid Obstructions

Clear The Working Area

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACK S   Recognize that kickback can happen.

With a basic understanding of kickback, you can reduce the element of surprisewhich contributes to accidents.

S   Never letthemovingchaincontactany ob- ject at the tip of the guide bar.

S  Keep the working area free from obstruc-tions suchas other trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoidany obstruction that your saw chain couldhit while you are cutting. When cutting abranch, do not let the guide bar contactbranch or other objects around it.

S  Keep your saw chain sharp and properlytensioned. A loose or dull chain can in-

crease the chance of kickback occurring.Follow manufacturer’s chain sharpeningandmaintenance instructions. Check ten-sion at regular intervals with the enginestopped, never with the engine running.Make sure the chain brake nuts are se-curely tightened after tensioning thechain.

S   Beginand continue cutting at full speed. If the chain is moving at a slower speed, there is greater chance of kickback occur-ring.

S  Cut one log at a time.S   Use extreme caution when re-entering a

previous cut.S   Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of

the bar (plunge cuts).S   Watch for shifting logs or other forces that

could close a cut and pinch or fall intochain.

S   Use the Reduced--Kickback Guide Barand Low--Kickback Chain specified foryour saw.

S   Keep a good,firmgripon thesawwithboth

hands when the engine is running anddon’tletgo. A firm grip will help youreducekickback and maintain control of the saw.Keep the fingers of your left hand encir-cling and your left thumb under the fronthandlebar. Keep your right hand com-pletely around the rear handle whetheryourare right handed or lefthanded. Keepyour left arm straight with the elbowlocked.

S   Positionyour left hand on the fronthandle-bar so it is in a straight line with your righthand on the rear handle when makingbucking cuts. Never reverse right and lefthand positions for any type of cutting.

S   Standwithyour weight evenly balancedonboth feet.

S   Stand slightly to the left side of the saw tokeep your body from being in a direct line

with the cutting chain.S   Do not overreach. You could be drawn orthrown off balance and lose control of thesaw.

S   Do notcut above shoulderheight. It is diffi-cult to maintain control of saw aboveshoulder height.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

WARNING:   The following featuresare included on your saw to help reduce thehazard of kickback; however, such featureswill not totally eliminate this danger. As achain sawuser, donot rely only onsafety de-vices. You must follow all safety precau-tions, instructions, and maintenance in thismanual to help avoid kickback and otherforces which can result in serious injury.S  Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar, designed

with a small radius tip which reduces thesize of the kickback danger zone on thebar tip. A Reduced--Kickback Guide Barhas been demonstrated to significantly re-duce the number and seriousness of kick-backs.

S  Front Hand Guard, designed to reduce thechanceof your left hand contacting thechainif your hand slips off the front handlebar.

S  Position of front and rear handlebars, de-signed withdistancebetween handlesand“in-line” with each other. The spread and“in-line” position of the hands provided bythis design work together to give balanceand resistance in controlling the pivot of the saw back toward the operator if kick-back occurs.

WARNING:   DO NOT RELY UPON ANY OF THE DEVICES BUILT INTO YOURSAW. YOU SHOULD USETHE SAW PROP-ERLY AND CAREFULLY TO AVOID KICK-

BACK. Reduced--kickback guide bars andlow--kickback saw chains reduce the chanceand magnitude of kickback and are recom-mended. Your saw has a low kickback chainand bar as original equipment. Repairs on achain brake should be made by an authorizedservicing dealer. Take your unit to the place of purchase if purchased from a servicing dealer,or to the nearest authorized master servicedealer.

S   Tip contact insome cases may cause a light-ning fast reverse REACTION, kicking theguide bar up and back toward the operator.

S  Pinching the sawchainalong thetopof theguide bar may push the guide bar rapidlyback toward the operator.

S   Eitherof thesereactions may cause youtolose control of the saw which could result

in serious injury.Do not rely exclusivelyupon thesafetydevices built intoyour saw.

CHAIN BRAKES  Chain Brake, designed to stop thechainin

the event of kickback.

WARNING:   Your chain saw isequippedwith a chain brake that is designedto stop the chain immediately if you get akickback. The chain brake reduces the riskof accidents, butonly youcan prevent them.DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE CHAINBRAKE WILL PROTECT YOU IN THEEVENT OF A KICKBACK.

WARNING:   Muffler is very hot dur-ing andafter use. Do not touchthe muffler orallow combustible material such as drygrass or fuel to do so.

FUELING & LUBRICATION

FUELING ENGINE

WARNING:   Removefuelcap slow-ly when refueling. This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasoline must be mixed with a good quality2-cycle air-cooled engine oil. Werecommend HusqvarnaRbrandoil. Ifyou donot use this oil, use a good quality 2-cycleair-cooled oil designed to be mixed at a ratioof 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtained by mixing0,125 liter of oil with 5 liters of unleadedgasoline. DO NOT USE automotive or boatoil. These oils will cause engine damage.

When mixing fuel follow the instructionsprinted on the container. Always read andfollow the safety rules listed under HANDLEFUEL WITH CAUTION.

IMPORTANTExperienceindicates thatalcohol blendedfuels(called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol)can attract moisture which leads to separationand formation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage. To avoid engine problems, empty the fuel system before storage for 30days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start theengine and let it run until the fuel lines andcarburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next

CHAIN BRAKE

WARNING:   If the brake band isworn too thin it may break when the chainbrakeis triggered. With a broken brake band, the chain brake will not stop the chain. Thechain brake should be replacedby an autho-rized service dealer ifany part is worn tolessthan 0,5mm thick. Repairs on a chainbrakeshould be made by an authorized servicedealer. Take your unit to the place of pur-chase if purchased from a servicing dealer,or to the nearest authorized master servicedealer.S  This saw is equipped with a chain brake.

The brake is designed to stop the chain if kickback occurs.

S   The inertia--activated chain brake isactivated if the front hand guard is pushedforward, either manually (by hand) orautomatically (by sudden movement).

S   If the brake is already activated, it isdisengaged by pulling thefronthand guardback toward the front handle as far aspossible.

S   When cutting withthe saw, thechain brakemust be disengaged.

Braking function controlCAUTION:   The chain brake must bechecked several times daily. The enginemustbe runningwhen performing thisproce-dure. This is the only instance when the sawshould be placed on the ground with the en-gine running.Place the saw on firm ground. Grip the rearhandlewith yourrighthand andthe front han-dle with your left hand. Apply full throttle byfully depressing the throttle trigger. Activatethe chain brake by turning your left wristagainst the hand guard without releasingyour grip around the front handle. The chainshould stop immediately.

Inertia activating function control

WARNING:   When performing thefollowing procedure, the engine must beturned off.Grip therearhandle with your right hand andthe front handle with your left hand. Hold thechain saw approximately 14” (35 cm) abovea stump or other wooden surface. Releaseyour grip on the front handle and use theweight of the saw to let the top of the guidebar fall forward and contact the stump. When the tip of the bar hits the stump, thebrake should activate.

CUTTING METHODS

IMPORTANT POINTSS   Check chain tension before first use and af-

ter 1 minute of operation. See CHAIN TEN-SION in the ASSEMBLY section.

S  Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics, masonry, non-wood building materials, etc.

S   Stopthe saw if the chain strikesa foreign ob- ject. Inspect the saw and repair or replaceparts as necessary.

S   Keep the chain out of dirt and sand. Even asmall amount of dirt will quickly dull a chainandthus increase thepossibility of kickback.

S  Practice cutting a few small logs using the

following techniques to get the“feel” of usingyour saw before you begin a major sawingoperation.S   Squeeze the throttle trigger and allow the

engine to reach full speed before cutting.S   Begin cutting with the saw frame against

the log.S   Keep the engine at full speed the entire

time you are cutting.S   Allow the chain to cut for you. Exert only

light downward pressure. If you force thecut, damage to the bar, chain, or enginecan result.

S   Release thethrottle trigger as soon as thecut is completed, allowing the engine toidle. If you run the saw atfullthrottle with-outa cutting load, unnecessary wear can

occur to the chain, bar, and engine.S   To avoid losing controlwhen cut is com-

plete, donotputpressureonsaw atendof cut.

S   Stop theengine before setting the saw downafter cutting.

TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES

WARNING:   Check for broken ordead branches which can fall while cuttingcausing serious injury. Do not cut near build-ings or electrical wires if you do not know thedirection of tree fall, nor cut at night since you

will not be ale to see well, nor during badweather such as rain, snow, or strong winds, etc. If the tree makes contact with any utilityline, the utility company should be notified im-mediately.S   Carefully planyour sawing operation in ad-

vance.S   Clear the work area. You need a clear area

all around the tree so you can have securefooting.

S  The chain saw operator should keep onthe uphill side of the terrain as the tree islikelyto roll or slidedownhill afterit isfelled.

S  Study the natural conditions that can causethe tree to fall in a particular direction.

(6 inches in diameter or larger)The notch method is used to fell large trees. A notch is cut on the side of the tree in the de-sired direction of fall. After a felling cut ismade on the opposite side of tree, the treewill tend to fall into the notch.

NOTE: If the tree has large buttress roots, remove them before making the notch. If us-ing saw to remove buttress roots, keep sawchain fromcontactinggroundto preventdull-ing of the chain.

NOTCH CUT AND FELLING THETREES  Make notch cut by cutting the top of the

notch first. Cut through 1/3 of the diameterofthetree. Next completethe notch bycut-ting the bottom of the notch. See illustra-tion. Once the notch is cut, remove the

notch of wood from the tree.

S  After removing the wood from the notch, make the felling cut on the opposite side of the notch. This is done by making a cutabouttwo inches higher than the center of thenotch. This will leave enough uncut woodbetween the felling cut and the notch to forma hinge. This hinge will help prevent thetreefrom falling in the wrong direction.

Openingof fellingcut

Closing of notch

Hinge holds tree on stump and helpscontrol fall

NOTE:  Before felling cut is complete, usewedges to open the cut when necessary tocontrolthe direction of fall. To avoid kickbackand chain damage, use wood or plasticwedges, but never steel or iron wedges.S   Be alert to signs that the tree is ready to fall:

cracking sounds, widening of the felling cut,or movement in the upper branches.

S   As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it down,

and get away quickly on your planned re-treat path.S  DO NOT cut down a partially fallen tree

withyour saw. Be extremely cautious withpartially fallen trees that may be poorlysupported. When a tree doesn’t fall com-pletely, setthe sawaside andpull downthetree with a cable winch, block and tackle,or tractor.

CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)

Bucking is the term used for cutting a fallentree to the desired log size.

WARNING:   Do not stand onthelogbeing cut. Any portion can roll causing lossof footing and control. Do not stand downhillof the log being cut.

IMPORTANT POINTSS  Cut only one log at a time.S   Cut shattered wood very carefully; sharp

pieces of wood could be flung towardopera-tor.

S  Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Neverallow another person to hold the log whilecutting andnever hold the logwithyour legor foot.

S  Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, and roots are tangled such as in a blowndown area. Drag thelogs intoa clearareabefore cutting by pulling out exposed andcleared logs first.

TYPES OF CUTTING USED FORBUCKING

WARNING:   If saw becomes pinchedorhung ina log, don’ttry toforce it out. You canlose control of the saw resultingin injury and/ordamage to the saw. Stop the saw, drive awedge of plastic or wood into the cut until thesaw can be removed easily. Restart the sawandcarefully reenterthecut. To avoidkickbackand chain damage, do not use a metal wedge.Do not attempt to restart your saw when it ispinched or hung in a log.

Use a wedge to remove pinched saw

Turn saw OFF  and use a plastic orwooden wedge to force cut open.

Overcutting begins onthetop side ofthe logwith the bottom of the saw against the log. When overcutting use light downward pres-sure.

Overcutting Undercutting

Undercutting involves cutting on theunder-

side ofthe logwithtop ofsaw against the log. When undercutting use light upward pres-sure. Hold saw firmly and maintain control. The saw will tend to push back toward you.

WARNING:   Never turn saw upsidedown to undercut. The saw cannot be con-trolled in this position.

Always make your first cut on the c ompres-sion side of the log. The compression side of the log is where the pressure of the log’sweight is concentrated.

Second cut

First cut on compression side of log

BUCKING WITHOUT A SUPPORTS  Overcut through 1/3 of the diameter of the

log.S  Roll the log over and finish with a second

overcut.S   Watch for logs with a compression side to

prevent the saw from pinching. See il-

lustrations for cutting logswith a compres-sion side.

BUCKING USING A LOG ORSUPPORT STANDS   Remember your first cut is always on the

compression side of the log. (Refer to the il-lustrations below for your first and secondcut)

S   Your first cut should extend   1/3   of thediameter of the log.

LIMBING AND PRUNING

WARNING:   Be alert for and guardagainst kickback. Do not allow the movingchain to contact any other branches or ob-

jects at the nose of the guide bar when limb-ingor pruning. Allowingsuch contact canre-sult in serious injury.

WARNING:   Never climb into a treeto limb or prune. Do not stand on ladders, platforms, a log, or in any positionwhich cancause you to lose your balance or control of the saw.

IMPORTANT POINTSS  Work slowly, keeping both hands firmly

gripped on the saw. Maintain secure foot-ing and balance.

S   Watch out for springpoles. Use extremecaution when cutting small size limbs.Slender material may catch the saw chainand be whipped toward you or pull you off balance.

S   Be alert for springback. Watch out forbranches that are bent or under pressure.

Avoid being struck by the branch or thesaw when thetensionin thewood fibers isreleased.

S  Keep a clear work area. Frequently clearbranches out of the way to avoid trippingover them.

LIMBINGS   Alwayslimb a tree after itis cutdown. Only

then can limbing be done safely and prop-erly.

S   Leave the larger limbs underneath thefelled tree to support the tree as you work.

S   Start atthe base ofthe felled tree andworktoward the top, cutting branches andlimbs. Remove small limbs with one cut.

S   Keep the tree between you and the chain.Cut from the side of the tree opposite thebranch you are cutting.

S   Remove larger, supporting branches withthecutting techniques describedin BUCK-ING WITHOUT A SUPPORT.

S  Always use an overcut to cut small and

freely hanging limbs. Undercutting couldcause limbs to fall and pinch the saw.

PRUNING

WARNING:   Limit pruning to limbsshoulder height or below. Do not cut if branches are higher than your shoulder. Geta professional to do the job.S   Make your fist cut   1/3   of the way

through the bottom of the limb.S   Next make a 2nd cut   all the way

through the limb.   Then cut a thirdovercut leaving a 1 to2 inch collarfromthe truck of the tree.
