Reno Huskie Families,
February is BLACK HISTORY MONTH. We kicked off second
semester with Peace Week to celebrate our diversity and to discuss
important topics about race in our school and we will continue those
discussions this month. February is here and we will be prepping our
11th graders for the ACT Exam scheduled 2/27. Our winter sports
will be winding down their seasons and entering the playoffs this
month and we will be presenting to classes and taking course
requests throughout the month for next year’s classes. One of the
most important things we need EVERYONE to complete this month
is:
COMPLETE YOUR ONLINE REGISTRATION NOW FOR
2018-2019 All students must complete Online Registration each year. Online Registration will open for the 18-19 school year on January 29, 2018. Online Registration is completed through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, if you need assistance with your username or pass word, please call 775-333-5050 EXT. 35005 This month the RHS Staff will begin Equity & Diversity Training with a 5-
part sequence of trainings. We are excited to start this work and RHS is
only the 2nd HS to take on this very important work.
Congrats to 12th Grader Reese Taylor for being nominated a Presidential
Scholar Candidate. He will go through a rigorous application process for
Presidential Scholar status. Great job Reese! RHS 9th grader Tommy Walsh was diagnosed with brain cancer last semester. During Winterfest we raised $1600 to support Tommy and his family. Here is the gofundme
information: https://www.gofundme.com/step-up-to-the-plate-with-tommy Please join us in Huskies helping Huskies to support Tommy during this difficult time.

Thank you for keeping in touch with us regarding your students’ attendance, we really appreciate your calls. - HELP NEEDED! We are in dire need of interviewers to assist with Junior Interview Project on Thursday, March 15th. You will not regret volunteering your time to interview our juniors who will be dressed up, have their resume in hand, and be ready to answer questions. Everything will be provided to you (interview questions, lunch…). PLEASE email Donna Clark at [email protected] to let her know that you are available (full day, half day…we’ll take whatever time that you can donate). Thank you!
YEARBOOK
News from The CUBE:
- CUBE website is www.washoeschools.net/renohsccc . Check out the calendar for what’s happening, the
Scholarship Grid for local scholarships (Scholarships/Financial Aid), copies of the SENIOR and JUNIOR Bulletins and resource links for reliable information about the College/Career search process.
- College Club will begin on Tuesday, 2/6, at lunch. We will be meeting the first and third Tuesday of the month to discuss how to search for colleges, develop a standardized testing plan, how to pay for college, how to create options through a balanced college list, the college essay, etc… It will be geared towards JUNIORS but open to SOPHOMORES as well. This semester’s agenda will be updated/posted mid-February.
- TMCC TOUR on 2/5/18. We will be taking a group of students to TMCC for a tour, mock college class, and Q&A. Have your student come to The CUBE to sign up and pick up a waiver ASAP!
- ACT on 2/27/18. The ACT will be administered (free of charge) to all JUNIORS. The test is significant for college entrance and financial aid. The most common regret that I hear from seniors, going through the college application process, is that they wish they had taken the ACT more seriously when they were JUNIORS. Do a little prep! o Free prep resources (practice tests, ACT question of the day) is available at www.actstudent.org/prep
Questions about the role of standardized testing and developing a plan that makes sense for YOUR student? Contact Mrs. Lerude to discuss.
- Junior Interview/Career Fair: Thursday, 3/15/18. All JUNIORS will be participating in a mock interview with a community volunteer and will visit our Career Fair during their US History class. Companies that will be present include Amazon, Tesla, Eriksen Construction, Renown, The Abbi Agency, military branch representatives, UNR, TMCC…
JUNIORS will be receiving a packet in their English class late February with a resume template, activity tracker and THE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS. They will be spending a class period developing their resume in The CUBE in early March.
- COLLEGE BOUND SENIORS: IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
UNR application deadline for merit aid is 2/1/18. A completed application includes a copy of your test scores and an official copy of a standardized test score. Make sure that you manage your application status on your My Nevada account.
Early registration deposit allows you to have priority registration for classes (a significant benefit at UNR).
Housing Deposit: Place a refundable deposit now and fill out the housing application to have your preference of dorms.
o Have you filed your FAFSA? It is available on The CUBE website under Scholarships/Financial Aid.
o Scholarships: Many scholarships are available now and typically have a smaller applicant pool because many
students lose focus. Check out the SCHOLARSHIP GRID on The CUBE website, “Scholarships/Financial Aid”, for a listing of local scholarships that RHS students have had success with in the past.
- JUNIORS interested in going away to college should begin preparing now. Contact Mrs. Lerude ([email protected]) to set up an appointment.
