As always, it is a great pleasure topresent our latest newsletter to stu-dents, parents and friends of theschool. It provides a snapshot of lifeat Hurstmere, which is full of oppor-tunities for the boys to pursue be-yond their classroom lessons. Inaddition to these activities andevents, I am most pleased with theattitudes and efforts displayed by thestudents in their regular lessons. In

the lower school we are seeing excellent standards, andthose students on the GCSE and other Key Stage 4courses are working hard to gain impressive grades. Ihave every reason to believe that the results that they willachieve will be the school’s best ever.

I am delighted to report that, following a period of consulta-tion with relevant stakeholders, the school has beenapproved by the Secretary of State for Education fortransfer to Academy status. As previously detailed, everyday school life and our core business of educatingyour sons will appear largely unaffected, but it is envisagedthat our ability to secure value for money in services to theschool will be enhanced by the greater autonomy thatAcademy status will bring. We shall retain the name ofHurstmere School.

Our thanks go to Green-wich Catering Services, who have provided ourmeals service over the pastfour years. After Easter wewelcome Wilson Jones,‘an exciting new catering company born out of a passionfor healthy eating’, as our new catering providers.

I should like to take this opportunity to remind parentsand students that school rules prevent the selling of food-stuffs and drinks by students to others. Students whocontravene this rule are liable to school sanction and theconfiscation of merchandise. Any proceeds from suchconfiscation will go to one of the school’s associated char-ities.

I should like to close by thanking you for your support at therecent Parent-Teacher Consultation evenings. As usual, virtually every Hurstmere student was represented at therelevant evening. It is through your continued support thatthe school is best able to serve the boys.

Kind regards,

Mr. A. Stringer - Headteacher

The annual Prize Giving ceremony saw the regularawards followed by afascinating addressby former studentAndy Priston, whoonce again support-

The four Houses are Caxton, Cobham, Sidney and Chaucer whichare named after famous people with a connection to the local area. The Houses have been reintroduced to forge links between yeargroups and encourage friendly competition across all subjects. Ineach year group two forms have been put together into one Houseand these are then linked to other year groups as depicted below.

In the next few weeks pupils from Year 10 may stand in hustings againstother candidates from their House, to decide who will run for the post ofHouse Captain. Every pupil in each House will then vote to decide whoshould stand as their House Captain. House Captains’ responsibilitieswill then develop many skills that employers look for such as leadership, initiative and determination, and will be an excellent addition to their C.V.

The Year 10 students, who will be travelling to Zambia

in July as part of their workexperience, have been working hard

to raise the funds for the trip. The students are raisingmoney towards their £13,500 target in order to fund thetrip and purchase equipment to help teach underprivi-leged children the game of Tag Rugby in Zambia. Thisequipment will then be donated to each of the orphanag-es and schools with which the Hurstmere students willwork. They have currently raised around £10,000 so, asyou can see, your support is still vital.

Not only have the students been raising money throughDiscos, Race Nights, Quiz Nights, Cake Sales and dona-tions from Blackheath Rugby Club, they have also startedto practise their coaching techniques in the local primary

As we come towards the end of the season all theteams can look back with much pride over thesuccess they have achieved this year. We have ahad a great intake of new players to the Year 7squad and it looks like they will grow into one ofthe best Rugby teams Hurstmere have fielded, sowatch this space.

The Year 7 squad has been bolstered by a very success-ful inter-house competition, during which the PE staff wereastounded by the exceptional level played by manyplayers new to the game.

The Year 8 team under the management of Mr Ball havehad a mixed season. They have a core of very goodplayers and we would like to commend the commitment ofthe following boys who turn up to training every week, in allweathers: Teddy Bevan; Ban Stock and Max Brian. Wewill be running an inter-house competition with the Year 8’sin search of new talent to bolster the squad.

The Year 9 team, under the management of Mr. Wright, has been the most successful team this season and thismay be down to the camaraderie that is present in thesquad. They have the best numbers at their trainingsessions, and there is real competition to get in the startingteam. They are the Kent Developing Schools SevensChampions, as well as being runners up in the 15 a-sideKent-Shield Competition. After narrowly losing to Tun-bridge Grammar in the final of the Kent Shield, the school

were asked to represent Kent in the Londonand South-East Division State SchoolsCompetition. This competition excluded Grammar schoolsfrom entering, and the squad of 22 players managed toprogress through to the Semi-final and were knocked outby the eventual winners. Massive congratulations to Mr.Wright and his squad. We look forward to next seasonwhere they will compete in the National Daily Mail Cup.

The Year 10 team played in the new format of the DailyMail Cup this year. After having been knocked out of thecup in the first round by Kent Cup finalists Dartford Gram-mar School, they were entered in to a mini league withBeths Grammar School and Howard School. With three ofthe first team squad missing, the team lost the first gameto Howard who consequently later lost to Beths. BethsGrammar is the ‘local Derby’ in the boys’ eyes as everygame that has been played between the two teams hasbeen fiercely contested and is always a close result. WithHoward having lost one game and won one game, andBeths having won one game, a win was the only result thatwould take us through to the next round of the competition. The game was played with a London Society referee atChislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School and the boysmanaged to win the game 17-15. Unfortunately, with allthree schools having won one game and lost one game itwent down to points’ difference. Beths went through to thelater stages of the competition, narrowly missing out on asemi-final place and were one game from playing at Twick-enham. Congratulations to the entire squad for their effortsthis season.

The Year 11 team under the Management of Mr. Davis areprogressing well through the Met-Kent Developing SchoolsLeague and we wish them every luck in their final games, and we hope that they will continue to play rugby once theyleave us in July. Good Luck!

There are also several large fundraising events takingplace over the next term, especially after the large successof the Year 7 Disco, held in February in conjunction withBlackfen School for Girls. The students ran anotherevening at Crayford Dogs from which all proceeds wenttowards the fundraising target.

If you would like to support us then please feel free tocontact the school.

We thank all of the students, parents and staff who havehelped so far in moving towards our final target for what willbe a life changing experience for the Hurstmere studentsin Zambia.

As a reward for their dedication and endeavour, theHurstmere Canoe Club went on a reward trip to theLondon Boat Show. At the show they got to have a lookround the boats; after a while it became clear that the boyscouldn’t afford to purchase a boat on their pocket money, especially as some of the boats were on sale for 8.5million: something for the boys to aim for!

As well as perusing the show and taking part in the festivi-ties they were able to watch some water sports profession-als in action before getting suited and booted to have a gothemselves. Fun was had by all!

The boys in the Canoe Club are now attending a weeklypool session, learning more complex skills, including howto role the kayak. They are making good progress and willhopefully be entering a series of spring competitions as theweather improves. If you are interested in joining in thecanoeing based fun, speak to Mr. Baston.

LAKE TAHOE 2011 - Ski TripThe trip started at 6 am at Hurstmereon Thursday 17th February 2011. Allpupils were on time and before weknew it we were on the road to LondonHeathrow. Then courtesy of VirginAtlantic we flew to San Francisco andarrived in a huge rainstorm. This didnot dampen our spirits as we knewthat rain down here meant snow ataltitude. On to the coach and off downthe I-80, arriving at the hotel the nextday! Yes the next day. We had to

including the staff had the greatestbut tiring experience with mostsleeping on the return coach journeyto the hotel each day after skiing. For the last night we stayed in SanFrancisco and enjoyed a meal atBubba Gump’s on the famous Pier39 overlooking Alcatraz. The lastday involved a tour of the city then offto the airport to come home to ‘OldBlighty’.

stop overnight in Sacramento as theI-80 was shut due to snow. This wasapparently the largest snow fall in 15years within this area and as we passedwith our snow chains on we knew whythe ‘pass’ was shut the night before.Eventually we got to the hotel and thenext day we got up to the slopes. After‘ski fit’ the boys finally got onto themountain and started to ski. The views, skiing slopes and snow were all unbe-lievable and the instructors /staff at theresorts were fantastic. All the boys

Well done to all the boys who took part, truly a greatperformance, but a special mention must go to BillyKillick, Sam Nunn and Alex Boufardeas. A number of theboys did so well they have been called up to representthe borough, as well as receiving an invitation to anEngland Rowing testing session!

If any student fancies giving rowing a go, come along tothe fitness room any Wednesday after school, 3 - 4pm.Well done to all those involved!

Mr. T. Baston and Mr. A. Maher

Every single pupil on the trip was a pleasure to take across ‘the pond’ to the United States and all responsesfrom the airline, hotel and resort staff echoed these positive comments regarding their behaviour and manners.

Both Mr. Wright and I would like to thank the staff, Ms Allsop, Mr. Davis and Mr. Robinson for their hard work, the administrative staff at Hurstmere, in particular Ms Sharpe, parents and pupils for their help and assistancethroughout the organisation and delivery of the trip.

It seems a long time ago now but lastterm Ms Guyan arranged a trip to theWW1 war graves. It was an earlystart and a long day but as the boyswere all so well behaved and theguide was so helpful and informative, everyone enjoyed themselves.

Once back at school, Ben Matthewswrote the best description of the day inFrench (translation on page 11).

Design & Technology

In the Autumn Term, 80 Year 10 pupils took part in the DesignVentura Project. This was an exciting new enterprise projectthat placed design skills in a real world context, developingstudent creativity and enterprise capabilities.

The brief was to design and manufacture a product thatwould be sold in the Design Museum Gift Shop. Pupilsworked in teams that were divided into four areas:

Team Leader Research Finance andMarketing Designer

The team leadersand researchersvisited the DesignMuseum in Londonfor the official projectlaunch and thedesigners and finance

and marketing people were involved in special ‘in-house’ work-shops led by practising designers and experts from the financeworld.

At the end of the project pupils were invited to present theirideas along with financial plans and manufacturing specifica-tions to a panel of judges where the winning Hurstmereentrant was decided. This team went forward to representthe school in the final that was judged by SebastianConran. Unfortunately our boys didn’t win this time butfound the project invaluable and an excellent starting point fortheir Technology GCSE.

Last Friday we went to Belgium, it was great. I got up at half past four because I had tobe at school by half past five. After that we left school by coach. We took the ChannelTunnel. When we arrived in Belgium we went to Hill ‘62 where we listened to somestories about the war. After that we ate at a farm. I ate bread and drank tea. After thatwe went to Ypres, it was great. The guide told us some stories. After that we went tothe Museum, where there are some trenches, which were very, very muddy. It was fun.The guide gave us some shrapnel.

On March 4th a group of 26 Year 10 students went to London’s Piccadilly Circus for the day to attend aNational French GCSE Conference. After their train journey, they joined another 500 students from schoolsall over the country. The day consisted of interactive activities led by French GCSE specialists and sketchesperformed by Scratch Impro, one of the UK’s leading comedy improvisation groups.

Our boys had a great time and they left the conference with fresh ideas and tips for their GCSE coursework andexaminations. They displayed exemplary behaviour and learned a lot from the day. My thanks to Mr. James and Mrs.Faurie for accompanying the students and myself, and helping to make the conference an enjoyable and valuableexperience.

I will get a chance to say farewell to the boys of Year 11when I address them at the final assembly, but first I would like to thank the parents whohave supported their boys, and myself, since starting at Hurstmere in 2006. I am confidentthat with your help and the hard work of the teaching and pastoral staff at the school thatthis year’s results will be above expectations. Having taught for over 30 years, half of thattime as a Head of Year, I would say that this group of young men are a credit to everyoneinvolved. There have been some upsets, tears and trouble but what is important is that thepupils are ready to move on to college or employment. Most boys would have taken partin the many school journeys such as Marchants Hill, the Ardeche and the USA. There havealso been sporting activities, music events, the Speak Out Challenge and variety ofextra-curricular events. For five years I have had the support of an excellent team of tutorsand no doubt they will go on to help many more boys through their school careers. Onbehalf of them and myself I say good luck, good health, work hard and enjoy your life to thefull. Mr. G. Jagniaszek – Head of Year 11
