March 2019 HURST GREEN NEWS Some material I was looking at recently told us that Indonesia is the largest country in SE Asia, made up of more than 17,000 islands, 1,340 different ethnic groups and 740 languages. They have a motto ‘Bhineka Tunggal Ika’ (Unity in Diversity). Across the diversity of ethnicity, language and religion, Indonesians have lived by the principle to live in solidarity and by collaboration. This harmony is fragile, corruption infects politics and business, often with devastating effects on the environment and the people. Those supposed to promote justice and protect the weak often fail to do so. As a consequence, in a country rich in resources many live in poverty. This is reflected in a traditional saying ‘A mouse dies in hunger in a barn full of rice’. The theme was a common one from the Old Testament where we are encouraged to love justice both as a country but also individually. As they identified injustice in Indonesia it was not difficult to reflect on the injustices in many countries and closer to home in our own country and our own communities. So when do we speak out and when do we say silent? Martin Luther King said ‘Our lives begin and end the day we become silent about things that matter’. It is a helpful reminder that it often takes courage to speak out on things that really matter and are important. Fear of being ignored, misunderstood, forgotten or drowned out by others can cause our silence. While overconfidence or ignorance can mean that the words are meaningless. Esther in the Bible is challenged to use her position in the king’s court to right injustice by speaking up for her people. She is told ‘Who knows if perhaps you were made for such a time as this.’ This brought to mind the line of a song ‘Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me’. Where I see injustice do I speak out or do my own prejudices and insecurities feed injustice? Do my actions promote justice in my community and in my land? Hurst Green and Holland Children’s CentreThis is just to update our local families about Surrey County Council’s proposals to close 38 Children’s Centres in Surrey including Hurst Green and Holland Children’s Centre.

At the Surrey County Council (SCC) cabinet meeting on 29 January this proposal for the closures was upheld. There is local opposition looking into ways to stop your Children’s Centre from being closed and we are hoping that something will come of this.We are running a Confidence Building course on Thursday mornings in March. Please contact the centre for more information 01883 723496. Meanwhile it is business as usual, which means that all the sessions will still be running. Please check our website: www.hurstgreenchildrenscentre.co.uk for our current programme which shows our current and future dates for clinics and sessions or follow us on www.facebook.com/hurstgreenchildrenscentre.

Plastic ChallengeWe hope you’ve been inspired by our series of articles on reducing single plastic use. Please make your voice heard - share what you are doing with friends, family and community. Ask your MP what they are doing to tackle single use plastics. Join the UN’s Clean Seas campaign and Greenpeace’s Plastic Pledge. Find out your own plastic footprint. Here are our last few suggestions:• Buy in bulk to minimise or eliminate

packaging. This goes for food and drink as well as cleaning supplies, toiletries, hardware items - anything that may come in plastic packaging.

• Use non-plastic containers for food: lunches, leftovers, freezing, storage, take-out, travelling... Request takeaways use your container instead of their disposable one. Take a container when you buy meat, fish or cheese.

• Buy glass and/or stainless steel containers for food storage. Glass works well for freezer storage as well, just ensure you leave room at the top of the jar.

• Check labels of toiletries. Did you know some facial scrubs and toiletry products contain tiny plastic beads? Avoid anything with ‘polyethylene’ listed as an ingredient.

We trust this challenge has made you more aware of your plastic use and helped you create some lasting changes.
