Canes Knock Off No. 6 Florida StateThe Miami volleyball team knocked off No. 6 Florida State, 3-1, in front of a nation-al television audience and a record crowd at the Knight Sports Complex on Friday. It was the first-ever win over a Top 10 team for the program. After dropping the first set 25-18, the Canes won the next three sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-22 and 25-18. Members of the record crowd of 1,129 stormed the court to congratulate the Hurricanes on the historic win.

Sebastian the Ibis, the University of Miami’s famous mascot, is one of 16 spirited heroes vying to become the 2012 Capital One Mascot of the Year, announced Monday by Capital One. Sebastian is one of three ACC mascots in the competition, joining Testudo (Maryland) and Ms. Wuf (NC State).

Fans will be able to vote for their favorite mascots via Twitter. Regular season vote officially opens at 12 p.m. EDT on Mon., Sept. 3, and continues weekly through Mon., Nov. 26. The top eight mascots with the best head-to-head records will then compete in a bracket-style, single-elimination competition to determine the overall winner. Fans can vote at www.CapitalOneBowl.com, on Facebook and on Twitter. All voting informa-tion appears at www.CapitalOneBowl.com.

For the first time in its 11-year history, the competi-tion will include two female mascots – Ms. Wuf and Wilma T. Wildcat from Arizona. The duo will be joined by four other competition newbies – Colorado State’s Cam the Ram, Missouri’s Truman the Tiger, Rutgers’ Scarlet Knight and Texas Tech’s Red Raider.

The rest of the 16-member 2012 Capital One All-America Mascot Team includes Cosmo (BYU), Sparty

(Michigan State), Mike the Tiger (LSU), Wolfie Jr. (Ne-vada), YoUDee (Delaware), Bucky Badger (Wisconsin), The Duck (Oregon) and Cocky (South Carolina).

In addition to the 2012 team, Western Kentucky’s Big Red became the first inductee into the Capital One Mas-cot Challenge Hall of Fame. Big Red competed eight times in the Capital One Mascot Challenge.

This year, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look inside the Capital One Mascot Training Camp. The quirky video vignettes will be released at www.Capital-OneBowl.com and www.Facebook.com/MascotChal-lenge.

The Capital One National Mascot of the Year will be announced Jan. 1, 2013, at the Capital One Bowl and will be awarded a $20,000 scholarship to help fund its school’s mascot program. Each of the 2012 Capital One All-America team members will also receive $5,000 for their university mascot program.

Volleyball Game Day Promotions

For the first time in Atlantic Coast Conference history, the league schedule will consist of 18 games.

Entering her eighth season at Miami, head coach Katie Meier and her squad will play two games apiece against NC State, Virginia, Duke, Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech during the season. The Canes will play only once against Maryland, Wake Forest, North Carolina and Boston College.

“As always, the ACC presents many challenges,” Meier said. “This is why players come to Miami. To play in big-time games and there are plenty of them this season.”

Maryland and Duke each advanced to the Elite Eight in last season’s NCAA tournament, while Georgia Tech fell to even-tual national champion Baylor in the Sweet 16. NC State, Virginia and Wake Forest all won at least one WNIT contest, giving Miami a total of 10 games against conference rivals that had at least one postseason win a season ago.

The Canes home conference schedule includes NC State (Dec. 20), Clemson (Jan. 3), Virginia (Jan. 6), Georgia Tech (Jan. 17), North Carolina (Jan. 27), Virginia Tech (Feb. 3), Florida State (Feb. 10), Boston College (Feb. 17) and Duke (Feb. 28).

“Along with welcoming Ten-nessee and Penn State, I be-lieve we have one of the most entertaining schedules in the nation,” Meier added. “I can-not wait to see our fans rock-ing the BankUnited Center as we take on these high-level opponents.”

For his team’s 41-32 victory over Boston College at Alumni Stadium, Al Golden has been named CBSSports.com’s Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Week.

The Hurricanes, who found themselves trailing the Eagles 14-0 midway through the first, opened up a 41-9 scor-ing run with a one-yard touchdown plunge from sophomore running back Eduardo Clements. After an intercep-tion of Boston College quarterback Chase Rettig was returned for a touchdown by sophomore linebacker Denzel Perryman, ACC Rookie of the Week Duke Johnson sparked the Hurricanes with scoring runs of 54 and 56 yards in the game’s middle stages. Freshman wide receiver Malcolm Lewis capped the Hurricanes’ scoring efforts with an 18-yard touchdown grab from Stephen Morris with less than 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

The 41 points scored by the Hurricanes against Boston College were the most by a Miami team against an FBS school in a season-opener since scoring 48 against Louisiana Tech in 2003.

How did you become a Hurricanes fan?I always admired the U as a kid growing up, but I truly started bleeding orange and green when I decided to come to Coral Gables to attend graduate school in the Sport Administration program. Once I stepped on campus, I realized within minutes how special of a place The U is.

Do you find it difficult supporting Miami all the way from Boston?No matter where I go, I find that there’s always haters who like to badmouth the program and the school. But I al-ways chalk their hatred up to the fact that they are either jealous or just “don’t understand”.

Is there a bar or watch parties that you attend for Hurricanes games?I haven’t attended any yet, but I know the Boston chapter of the Alumni Association puts on great events and I am looking forward to going to some this year.

Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Chestnut Hill?I just started becoming active in the Boston chapter of the Alumni As-sociation and have met a lot of great Hurricane fans and alumni that live in the Boston area. I am looking forward to seeing a lot of them out in full force on Saturday as we dismantle BC and get the season off to a great start!

How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? I put my Miami flag up next to the TV and I wear my orange Devin Hester #4 jersey every single week when I watch games. Unfortunately, living so far away I have to watch most games on TV. I can’t wait for this Satur-day to come so I can watch my team right in my backyard!

Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes fan? My first ever Miami football home game in 2004 at the Orange Bowl: Canes vs. FSU. The game was delayed four days because of a hurricane that came through town. I was absolutely blown away at the spirit and energy of the crowd. The game went into overtime, and Chris Rix the FSU QB fumbled the ball on the first series of OT before Frank Gore ran the ball in for the win 16-10.

How did you become a Hurricanes fan?I’m from Merritt Island, Fla. originally. I went to the same high school, and lived in the same neighborhood, as guys like Bubba McDowell, Hur-lie Brown, Darryl Spencer, and Derrick Ham. Bubba was well respected in our town, and as a kid, I wanted to follow his path. Hurlie & Darryl would come back and speak to us about what it took to play on the next level, and their actions reinforced that “Cane Family” mentality.

Do you find it difficult supporting Miami all the way from Kansas?I live in Kansas City, so no one can really relate to the passion I have for my Canes. But, I still travel to at least three or four games per year. This year I’m attending the Kansas State, Notre Dame, Florida State, and Vir-ginia games.

Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Kansas?My friend Jeremy Bolinger is the one of the only Hurricanes I know from Kansas at the moment. We’re both on the same message boards, so we talk pretty often.

How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear? Our basement is now known as the “The Hurri-Cave.” We’ll have anywhere from eight to ten fans gathering in it this weekend. I have tons of Hurricanes gear - and I wear it everyday. Fearless, proud, loyal, rabid Cane.

Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes fan? Too many to name, but I’ll rattle off a few: 1) Wearing Miami Hurricane gear under my BDU’s in the Army. The games were tape delayed when we were in Germany, and I used to try and avoid any news releases about the outcome so I could watch it on my terms. I loved arguing with Nebraska fans about how great Miami was, and how elite Florida talent was in relation to the rest of the country. 2) I got out of the Army in 1999. I was finally able to see Hurricane games in person again. My first live action was Miami vs. FSU in 2000. Unbelievable. 3) Mo Sikes’ interception return for a TD vs UF. I was sitting in the middle of their student section, and purchased the ticket for $160. They were going nuts right before that... no one sat down the entire time. You could hear noth-ing but Canes roaring when Sikes crossed the endzone and politely placed the ball on the field. Priceless. 4) Sean Taylor vs FSU - every game.

Hurricane Club Surpasses 2011 Membership MarkThe Hurricane Club has surpassed last year’s membership of 5,331 members and is nearing its goal of 5,500 members for 2012. To date, more than 5,300 members representing 48 states and four different countries are proud members of the Hur-ricane Club - but we still need your help to reach 5,500 members for 2012!

The Hurricane Club - which helps to increase scholarship-funding for student-athletes, improve facilities and provide operation funding for more than 400+ student-athletes across 17 varsity sports - relies on the generosity of Hurricanes fans, alums and former student-athletes to continue a high caliber of excellence in the classroom and in competition.

No one knows that better than Jesse Marks, now in his third year as Assistant Athletics Director for Development with the Hurricanes. Marks, a two-time UM grad who began his professional career with the Hurricane Club, knows there are Canes fans in South Florida, across the U.S. and even around the world who “Stand By The U.”

“It’s a testament to the fans, families, alumni, the current, former and future Hurricanes, all wanting to uphold the Miami legacy,” Marks said. “No matter if that means a $40 or $40,000 donation, our fans want to support our program and student-athletes.”

That’s why the Hurricane Club, founded in 1972, has implemented recent initiatives like the “40-for-40” campaign. In celebration of the organization’s 40th anniversary, fans can now join for as little as $40.

Marks said the Hurricane Club has its sights on much bigger targets. Eventually, the Hurricane Club would like to see a membership of 7,500 strong by 2015. Other goals for 2012 included raising $10.1 million in scholarship support (a $500,000 increase from 2010) and 40 percent member participation in the 40-for-40 campaign.

“Our fans want to feel connected to the University of Miami and there is no better way to do that then philanthropi-cally,” Marks added.

Radio Caracol 1260 has entered into a three-year partnership to serve as the exclusive Spanish broadcasting rights holder for Miami Hurricanes football games.

“Radio Caracol brings a strong listener base, deep local roots and expertise in promotions,” Miami Associate AD for Communications & Marketing Chris Freet said. “We were looking for a more than just a radio partner; we needed a partner in the community. One that can help UM builds relationships locally and creates a stronger foothold in the Spanish market. We hope this three-year partnership is just the start of a long tradition.”

WSUA 1260 AM, the leader in Spanish language News/Talk/Sports programming in South Florida, will become the Spanish language flagship station of the Miami Hurricanes and will broadcast football games for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons. Pepe “Chamby” Campos (analyst) and Jose Martinez (analyst) will serve as the on-air team. Martinez is a long-time Canes broadcaster, while Campos is one of the most respected and tenured Spanish radio voices in South Florida.

“The Canes are a symbol of our city, dear to the hearts of Miamians,” Radio Caracol General Manager Tomas Martinez said. “We are thrilled to bring live coverage of all the excitement to the Hispanic aficionados in South Florida on our station. The Miami Hurricanes are announcing a special ticket deal – the “Publix Nine before 9” for the team’s 2012 home football schedule at Sun Life Stadium.

The “Publix Nine before 9” deal begins on the Monday before each home football game, and will allow fans the opportunity to purchase tickets to that week’s game for only $9 each. To receive the special price, tickets must be purchased in person at the BankUnited Center between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.

The special kicks off this Monday, Sept. 10, with $9 tickets available for Saturday’s game vs. Bethune-Cookman. Seats at the special price will be available through Friday, and must be purchased between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. at the BankUnited Center. This week, and in all ensuing weeks other than Florida State, there is no limit to the number of tickets fans can purchase. There is a limit of four $9 tickets per customer for the team’s game against the rival Seminoles.

After registering a pair of shutouts during the WVU 90 Minute Classic, sophomore goalkeeper Emily Lillard was named to Top Drawer Soccer’s Team of the Week.

Lillard recorded four saves in Friday’s 1-0 overtime win over Pittsburgh and another four saves in Sunday’s scoreless draw against host West Virginia. The Hurricanes (3-2-1) have relied on the steady play of the transfer keeper, who made the switch from Arkansas to Miami prior to the 2012 season.

The sophomore, who ranks eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 0.56 goals against average, has allowed only

three goals in her five starts this season. Her 3.40 saves per game leads all ACC goalkeepers, while her .850 save percentage ranks her sixth in the conference.

Only UM coaches who have passed the annual NCAA Coaches Certification Exam may be involved in the recruitment process for the university. Only these certified coaches are permitted to contact or evaluate any prospective student-athletes off-campus. UM may not contact a student-athlete who is interested in transferring from another institution without first receiving written permission from that institution. Pop Quiz: Is it permissible for a booster to accompany an UM coach when he/she visits a local high school or prospects home? Answer: No. A booster may not accompany a coach during any recruiting activates.

Did you know ... The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame was the brainchild of a group of eight judges of the Circuit Court of Dade County, Fla., who were also UM alumni. Completed in 1989 as part of the extensive expansion of UM athletic facilities under the direction of former athletic director Sam Jankovich, the building is one of an elite handful of dedicated Hall of Fame structures gracing our nation’s college campuses. The UM Sports Hall of Fame places on record forever the names and achievements of the men and women who have brought national and international acclaim to their university and who have gone on to bring further credit to their school, their communities and themselves by the manner in which they have assumed their responsibili-ties as citizens. Athletes are not eligible until 10 years after their final year of competition. The Hall has inducted only 267 of the thousands of former student-athletes and coaches who have worn the orange, green and white. Each year, an induction banquet is held in the spring to honor those chosen to join this unique and special fraternity. The Tom Kearns Hall of Fame Building opened in 1989 and displays artifacts that range from the football from the first game in school history in 1926 to Gino Toretta’s Heisman Trophy to the Semi-nole War Canoe, a 10 foot long canoe dug from a 250 year old cypress tree to Ron Fraser’s “Lucky Shoes”, worn for both the 1982 and 1985 National Championship games, along with championship trophies, among them baseball, women’s golf, and the crystal football trophy won by the 2001 National Champions. The “Hall of Honor” lists the All Americans from each sports, and those athletes selected to play professional sports, including all football and baseball draft picks.

The U In 1973, UM’s Athletic Federation, the fund raising arm of the athletic department now known as the Hurricane Club, commissioned a lo-cal public relations expert to develop a distinctive logo. The University had gone several years with a variety of helmet and uniform changes and the Federation noted that a number of major colleges have the initials UM. Miami designer Bill Boden-hamer suggested the “U” idea, which lent itself to slogans like “U gotta believe” and “U is great”. Until the early 1990’s, each sport had their own unique logo with a silhouette of a player in

the middle of The U... football had a receiver catching a ball, baseball had a batter swinging, diving had a diver diving into The U, etc. The current version of The U was to standardize the look and make it even more recognizable. Recently, BleacherReport.com voted Miami’s helmet the No. 1 helmet logo in College Football.

Touchdown TommyThe tradition of shooting off a celebratory can-non shot after Hurricanes scores began during the 1934 season ! The original cannon was named “Lil’ Joe”, but later renamed “Touchdown Tommy” and has been manned by members of the Sigma Chi Fraternity since its inception. The first Touchdown Tommy, after 70 years of service, was retired after the 2003 season and is proudly displayed in the UM Sports Hall of Fame.

University of Miami freshman RB Duke Johnson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Johnson was one of two true freshmen (Ereck Flowers, T) to start in Miami’s 41-32 win at Boston College. The rookie totaled 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries, posting the most rushing yards by a UM true freshman since Javarris James in 2006 (148 against Houston). He scored his career-first touchdown on a 54-yard scamper in the second quarter and added a 56-yard score in the third quarter. Johnson tallied a team-high 214 all-purpose yards (135 rush, 10 receiving, 69 kick return).
