WORKS UPDATE
COUNCIL SUPPORTS EQUALITY
The Huon Valley Council works and depot crew are close to finishing quite a few jobs around the municipal area.
The work on the playground and facilities at Heritage Park is nearing completion. There are still a few playground items to go in. Contractors have yet to install the Flying Fox; orbital roundabout and seats as they continue with the formwork and landscaping.
Huon Valley Council Commissioner Adriana Taylor commended the work crews and contractors working on Heritage Park.
“The contractors and council workers have been doing a wonderful job trying to pull the last elements of the Park together. Obviously they’ve been dependent on the weather, but things are progressing at a fast rate and we aim to have the playground open as soon as possible.
“Work has also been continuing along with flood mitigation work in Shield Street in Huonville. Stage One consisted of a box culvert under the street, and will hopefully be completed in the next two weeks. Further culvert work will be installed after Christmas.
“We also have 3 other projects we aim to complete before the Christmas break. The remediation work on Esperance Coast Road, the land and road slip at Lady Bay at Southport and the replacement of the Woodcock Road bridge at Cygnet are all expected to be wrapped up before we take a short break, and start it all again.
“I would like to thank the designers, engineers, workers and contractors who do a wonderful job providing residents with amenities and infrastructure. Roads, bridges and playgrounds don’t get a lot of publicity, but they are vital amenities, and the Huon Valley Council appreciates the people who make this possible,” Commissioner Taylor said.
Paths and gardens being created at Heritage Park in Geeveston.
CYGNET FOLK FESTIVALFrom the 12th – 14th of January 2018 the small town of Cygnet will again play host to the annual Cygnet Folk Festival. This year will be the 36th Cygnet Folk Festival, one of Australia’s most iconic folk music festivals. Very highly regarded by musicians and festival-goers from all over Australia and overseas, competition to come to Cygnet is at an all time high amongst performers, and last year we had a record number of applications!
The Festival is a showcase of eclectic music genres featuring both local and international talent, dance, poetry, master-classes, film, kids’ entertainment, food, wine, art and local handicrafts all set in the breathtaking scenery of Tasmania’s Huon Valley. Day tickets or full weekend passes can be purchased from their website www.cygnetfolkfestival.org
THE BULK-BUYERS’ GUIDE TO THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Throughout December residents in southern Tasmania can buy their own solar system at bulk-discount prices.
“If you’ve been waiting for the stars to align before getting solar panels, wait no longer,” says Todd Houstein, Executive Officer of Sustainable Living Tasmania (SLT). SLT are partnering with southern Tasmania’s councils to offer bulk-buy prices for household solar energy systems right through this month.
More than 30,000 buildings across Tasmania are already harnessing the sun to generate their own electricity, reducing bills and the state’s reliance on imported polluting electricity in the process.
“While solar prices continue to drop, so do government subsidies. Every day you delay is another you miss out on the benefits that solar panel systems provide.
“These prices combined with the Tasmanian Government’s interest-free loan program makes this is an opportune time to join the solar revolution.
The Eco Home Guide crew at SLT help Tasmanians navigate the sometimes complex options available to deliver more clean energy right across southern Tasmania. “It’s better for the planet, and it’s gives you better control of your energy and your household budget” Mr Houstein said.
