Y HISTORIC HUNTSVILLE DEPOT 320 Church Street, Huntsville, AL 35801 | 256.564.8100 | earlyworks.com
One of the South’s oldest railroad passenger depots and now a lively transportation museum, the Historic Depot served as the local passenger house and corporate offices for the eastern division headquarters of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad and was used as an active passenger station until 1968. The building is well-preserved and appears much as it did in 1860. Graffiti on three walls of the upper story is a result of the building’s role as a prison for captured Confederate militia, as a billet for Union troops en route to major battles and as a hospital for the wounded from those battles.
CIVIL WAR TOUR & BBQ Follow your guide through the Historic Huntsville Depot and stroll the floors that soldiers once walked. After the tour you’ll enjoy a truly Southern meal within this historic setting.
HOBO DINNER Dress down and fill up at the Historic Huntsville Depot, as you dine in fine Southern style and hear about the life of a hobo along the train lines and around town.

LEARN HUNTSVILLE’S ROLE IN THE CIVIL WAR Tours offered seasonally | 256.509.3940 | mischiefandmayhem.bizTake a walking tour with local historians in period costume to learn what was happening here during the war. Huntsville was occupied, on and off, for three years. SPIES, LIES AND ALIBIS is a well-researched compilation of stories such as the pro-Union man who nailed an American flag to his roof and spied on his neighbors, the fate of six brothers who fought for the Confederacy, the Huntsville native who ordered the first shot fired at Ft. Sumter and many more. Take the CIVIL WAR BONES TOUR through Maple Hill Cemetery and see the grave of Abraham Lincoln’s brother-in-law,“General J,” a Union officer who fell in love with a local girl and married her, the man whose dramatic escape from a Union prison was detailed in the secret diary he kept and many more.

Murder Mystery Dinner: Elizabeth Dale Gibbons Flanagan Jeffries High Brown Routt, aka the notorious Black Widow of Hazel Green, is on trial for the attempted murder of her neighbor, Abner Tate. The year is 1855, and the court of public opinion is running strongly against her. Join us as she faces her accuser, fortified by the hilarious testimonies of her six husbands who have returned from the grave to support her for this special event! This play is based on a true story, and the audience is invited to participate. History on the Rocks (historic pub crawl): Our evening begins at Green Bus Brewery where we will sample local beers and appetizers before suffragist/pro-prohibitionist Carrie Nation catches us in the act. Carrie visited Huntsville in 1904, wielding an ax to bust up bars. If she behaves herself, we may invite her to join us at our second venue, Amendment XXI. There, we’ll be entertained by Scotsman Neal Rose, who ran a tavern and entertained guests with the pet crow that sat on his shoulder. Mr. Rose served as the quartermaster for General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. We’ll enjoy sandwiches and a Bloody Mary, named for Mary Queen of Scots, of course!
Our last stop will be SIP, the speakeasy-style bar in the old art-deco Times Building, built by J. Emory Pierce on the cusp of the Great Depression. Mr. Pierce will join us as well for dessert and Irish coffee, and regale us with his elaborate cons that landed him in prison and sent him to the afterworld with a colorful and flamboyant funeral, escorted by 101 of his closest friends. Tell Mr. Pierce “Lucky sent me” and you’re guaranteed a fun time!
