It is with great pleasure and a sense of excitement that I welcome you to the 2019-2020 schoolyear! We look forward to a year filled with learning and a multitude of opportunities to bring ourdistrict community together.

The Huntington School District is rich with tradition and has earned its reputation for offeringstrong and broad-ranging curricula in all disciplines, as well as extensive, high quality extracur-ricular opportunities. All serve as a source of pride within the school district and among itsstudents. Our dedicated and concerned administrators, teachers, and support staff will continueworking diligently to help our students excel academically, socially and emotionally, whilepromoting their growth as well rounded school and community citizens.

This calendar emphasizes the critical nature of communication among all members of the schoolcommunity and characterizes the partnership that exists among school, home and community.Please take the time to review its contents. It is my hope that you will choose to attend some ormany of the events and activities to be held throughout the year. These activities offer residents abroad range of opportunities to experience firsthand the hard work and achievements of ourstudents, staff and schools, as well as provide a source of enjoyment.

They compete in five timedtests throughout the school year and earn awardsbased on their efforts. The program’s focus is onlearning to take academic risks and on encouragingstudents to challenge themselves.

Anynew entrant to a school district is required to submita physical exam certificate within 30 days of thestudent’s entrance into his/her new school. TheHuntington School District is required to participatein the State Department of Health’s Weight StatusSurvey during certain years. No names or informationabout individual students are disclosed. You maychoose not to participate by sending a signed “optout” letter to your school nurse on or beforeNovember 1 of the school year. Please contact yourchild’s school nurse should you require any additionalinformation.

The school-based Response toIntervention Support Team (RtI) includes schoolpsychologists, social workers, speech therapists,school nurses, guidance counselors, and otherinstructional staff members as warranted. Childrenmay be referred to the RtI Team so that professionalstaff can review educational concerns.

Parents may refertheir child for a CSE evaluation if they suspect aneducational disability by writing a letter of referral tothe building principal.

Whilestudents are permitted to possess such devices duringthe school day, they are prohibited from using them inany manner that invades the privacy of students,employees, volunteers, or visitors. Students are notpermitted to use any form of information technologyor electronic communication, including their ownpersonal electronic devices, to harass, bully, includingcyberbully, and/or discriminate against or threatenothers. Cyberbullying that creates a hostileenvironment is prohibited. If a student violates thisprohibition, he/she is subject to discipline under thisprovision and/or any other provision in this code ofconduct, the District’s Dignity for All Students Act Policy7580 and Regulation 7580 and/or any law and/orregulation that may be applicable to the circumstancesinvolved. Students are prohibited from takingphotographs or otherwise electronically recording theimage of any other person at any time while on a schoolproperty, a school bus and/or anywhere in a schoolbuilding and/or on school grounds during the schoolday except as expressly permitted in connection withauthorized use in classrooms.

or welfare of others;• Misconduct on a school bus• Academic misconduct including plagiarism,

cheating, altering records;• Lateness to class/cutting.

These violations are outlined in greater detail, along withspecific examples, in the Code of Conduct document.

As ageneral rule, discipline will be progressive. This meansthat a student’s first violation will usually merit alighter penalty than subsequent violations. Thefollowing factors will affect the determination ofeffective discipline:• Student’s age;• Nature of offense and circumstances leading to it;• Student’s prior disciplinary record;• Information from parents, teachers and/or others,

as appropriate;• Other extenuating circumstances.

If the conduct of a student is related to a disability orsuspected disability, the student will be referred tothe Committee on Special Education. Discipline,specifically any removals for more than 10 days, willbe administered on the basis of whether or not thereis a connection between the student’s disability andthe infraction committed.

• Restrain or remove a student whose behaviorinterferes with the orderly exercise andperformance of school district functions, powersand duties if that student has refused to refrainfrom further disruptive acts.

The superintendent, principals, assistantprincipals, deans, administrative assistants and theschool nurse may conduct searches of students andtheir belongings if there is reasonable suspicion thatthe search will result in evidence that the studentviolated the law or code of conduct. Searches requiredocumentation by the staff member. Police may enterschool property to question or search a student onlyif they have a search or arrest warrant, probable causeto believe that a crime has been committed on schoolproperty, or been invited by school officials. In theseinstances, students must be informed of their legalrights; remain silent if they so desire; or request thepresence of a parent or an attorney.

In the event that a search does not turn up any illegalor improper items, the administrator will acknowledgesuch and apologize to the student for having to undergothe search. The administrator will notify the parent thatthe search took place and, if necessary, arrange forappropriate support services for the student.

Guidelines of prohibitedconduct are described in the full Code document andrelated Board policies.

The district will initiate disciplinary action against anystudent or staff member as per the outlined penaltysection of the code. The district reserves the right topursue a civil or criminal legal action against anyperson violating the code.
