Purpose of Michigan’s YouthHunter Education

Challenge• A NRA youth program that promotes and preserves our hunting heritage.

• Provides framework in which youth can be introduced to, and/or further develop their skills in hunting and shooting activities.

• Through participation in this structured training and development program, participants (youth) become safer, more responsible, and ethical hunters.

What is MYHEC? MYHEC is an annual two day program exclusively for Hunter Education Course graduates from North America up to 18 years of age.

The program provides youth with a unique opportunity to test their skills at a variety of hunting techniques.

Because the events are conducted in simulated hunting conditions, MYHEC provides the best test of a young hunter’s skills short of an actual situation afield.

Though participants are scored and ranked in all MYHEC events, the program’s competitive edge is diminished as the real “challenge” focuses on personal improvement and sportsmanship.

EventsMYHEC is comprised of the following eight events:

Four Shooting Events

• Archery - A walk-through field course where participants fire at life-sized 3-D targets at various distances.

• Muzzleloading - Incorporate firing at targets at various distances.

• .22 Light Rifle - Incorporate firing at targets at various distances.

• Shotgun - Provides shooting over a variety of courses that simulates bird hunting situations.

Four Responsibility Events

• Wildlife Identification - Tests participant’s ability to identify game animals by tracks, bones, hides, feathers, and wildlife signs.

• Orienteering - Serves as a map and compass course that applies to orienteering skills useful to every hunter.

• Hunter Safety Trail - Presents actual field conditions testing safety and legal issues, requiring participants to make educated, responsible decisions.

• Hunter Responsibility Exam - Tests safety, ethics, and advanced hunter knowledge.
