Rifle Range will be closed September 10-14, 2018 due to the harvest of beetle kill in the area. The work will take place be-tween 8am and 4pm during those days, allowing use of the range in the evening. If more information is required, please call Bill Doroshuk at (250) 421-0164.

WICKED WEED OF THE WEST SPOTTED AROUND COLUMBIA LAKE

Another July has come and gone, but not all of the fireworks are over.

The striking pink display of spotted knapweed, Centaurea stoebe ssp.

micranthos, is still going strong in rangelands and old fields and along

highways and railroad grades across the country. Native to Europe,

spotted knapweed was introduced accidentally to North America in

the late 19th century, and has since become a problematic invasive

weed, especially in the west.

Knapweeds are aggressive invaders that spread quickly, out-

competing desirable forage and native plants. They reproduce by seed

and may also regenerate from the root crown. Knapweed produces

toxins at its roots which stunt the growth of nearby plants and dis-

places native species.

You can help to keep it under control by pulling, digging, burning and

bagging whenever you see it. You can also "cook" it in clear plastic

bags left in the sun to kill seeds. CAUTION: Wear gloves, boots, long pants and eye protection. Here's a

link to some interesting information about knapweed and how to control it.

Frequently asked questions about being a Councillor or

Mayor:

Q. How much time does it take to be on Council?

A. Members of Council are expected to attend Regular Coun-

cil Meetings on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. It is

important that all members attend to be informed on each

decision that is made. A quorum of three members must be

in attendance in order for the meeting to proceed.

Other meetings Council members are expected to attend are

budget meetings, committees of Council, Provincial govern-

ment agency meetings, conferences and training sessions

and strategic planning. Councillors should be prepared for

each meeting by reading the agenda prior to the meetings.

They should be available by phone and email.

Q. How much does the Mayor or a Councillor get paid?

A. The Mayor receives $6,300 each year and a Councillor

receives $3,800, paid on quarterly basis. Beginning January

1, 2019, Council’s remuneration will be fully taxable as in-

come. Members of Council are reimbursed for travel expens-

es, meals and accommodations for any out of town meetings

or training sessions.

Q. What is the corporate employment structure of the

Village staff?

A. Council has one employee—the Chief Administrative Of-

ficer. All other staff are employed by the CAO on behalf of the

Village and are responsible to that position. Staff are gov-

erned according to the BC Employment Standards Act, the

Community Charter and Village policies.

Q. Can Council slash the budget?

A. Budgets are set by Council annually in the 5 year financial

plan. Each year, Council and staff make all efforts to limit

Village expenses while providing quality services, with a lim-

ited Village tax base. Property taxes are an investment in our

community and contributes to our quality of life.
