Top 5 plants for August
I hope you enjoy reading about
my top 5 plants for late summer.
It's not easy to decide which are
the best from so many wonderful
plants that flower at this time of
year. If your garden has gone dull
now is the time to learn what you
can add in for this time next year.
Dahlia coccinea Var PalmeriUpright, branching stems, that are clothed with handsome, rich green
serrated leaves, are crowned with small clusters of yellow-centered,
burnt orange flowers. These flowers are reasonably large, and their
vivid colour makes them really stand out from the crowd. I got this
from Avon bulbs mail order catalogue.
onarda 'On Parade' I decided to trial 10 different
Monarda's and see which
preformed the best. 'On Parade'
was the winner followed by
'Othello', 'Garden View Scarlet,
'Balance', and 'Jacob Kline' all are
mildew resistant.'On Parade has
whorls of magenta crimson
flowers, Grow in good, moisture
retentive heavy soil, in sun . Lovely mildew resistant winter
silhouettes.
Persicaria microcephala 'Purple Fantasy'
Persicaria microcephala'Purple Fantasy'
Thalictrum delavayi 'Splendide'
Stunning, arrow-shaped green
leaves with echoing purple arrow
inside; mainly grown for its
remarkable foliage. I found this in
a wonderful Nursery called
Hessefof in Holland last year.
Hunting Brook seems to be the
only places selling it in Ireland
and the UK!
Thalictrum delavayi 'Splendide'
This giant meadow rue fromFrench heuchera breeder,Thierry Delabroye, popped up asa garden seedling resulting froma midnight rendezvous betweenthe Chinese Thalictrum delavayiand Thalictrum elegans. Theresult is a 9' tall stalk, with thetop 3' a massive 4' wide cloud-like cluster of lavender-pinkdangling flowers starting in lateJune and continuing until latesummer. Because of the
immense floral weight staking is recommended. Filipendula purpurea 'Elegans'This is the plant that that creates the stunning cloud
Filipendula purpurea 'Elegans
effect in the main garden in Hunting Brook. I bought one
of these from Mount Venus Nursery two years ago andkept dividing it till it gave this floating cloud effect. It willdo best in full sun and moisture retentive soil.
