NATURE PROGRAMS—WEEKDAYS

BEAVER WALK

Thursday, November 2, 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Miquin

Woods, ages 5 through adult, $3 per person

Beavers are fascinating creatures!

They are the largest rodent in North

America, and the animal that

changes their environment the most

after humans. They use their

ever-growing teeth to cut down

trees and branches to build dams

and lodges, and to eat the inner

bark. We will look for signs of

beavers along

our pond, and

hope to see the

creatures

themselves!

Meet at Miquin

Woods, 326

Newport Road,

Glen Gardner, and ride in a County van ¾ mile to the

pond to save some time. Please arrive ten minutes early

so we can all board the van together!

EVENING WITH THE NIGHTTIME SKY

Thursday, November 9, 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM, Hoffman

Park, ages 8 and through adult, $3 per person

Guest leader Wayne Petko is an astronomer with the

N.J. Astronomical Association based at the observatory

in Voorhees State Park. He has volunteered to share his

evening with us and share the wonders of the evening

sky. This time of year offers us a chance to explore

some late summer features and gives us a taste of what

will become visible through the winter months.

see WEEKEND NATURE PROGRAMS on the next page

MUSHROOMS GALORE

Wednesday, January 24, 7:00 PM to

8:00 PM, Echo Hill, ages12 through

adult, $3 per person

described, and preserved at the

Oakmoss Mycological Preserve in

Potterstown, which is probably the

most mycologically diverse acre in

America if not the world. This

program includes a slide show of some of the most

beautiful and/or interesting mushrooms found at OMP and

a display of some of the most unusual dried samples.

LOVE IN NATURE

Thursday, February 15, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Echo Hill

Lodge, ages 10 through adult, $3 per person

Male house wrens construct “dummy

nests” of a few sticks in several different

locations, and bring the female around on

a “house-hunting” tour before she decides

on the perfect spot for her nest. Male

nursery web spiders present a parcel of

food wrapped in silk as a gift for their chosen female.

Male bowerbirds build a “bower” of sticks and decorate it

with blue objects, and then dance for the females. In

honor of Valentine’s Day, enjoy a slide show of various

courtship rituals in nature around the world.

BUILD A NUTHATCH BOX WORKSHOP

Thursday, February 8, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Echo Hill,

ages 8 and up, $15 per box (limit one box per family)

With their nasal “ank ank” and being the only bird able to

walk down a tree, Nuthatchs are one

of the most enjoyable backyard birds.

During this program, we will learn a

little bit about our Nuthatches and the

breeding behavior. We will then

assemble boxes

together. Wood will be

pre-cut and screws will

be provided. Please

bring your own Phillips

screwdrivers.

Saturday, October 14, 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Cold Brook

Reserve, 8 through adult, $5 per person

Let’s explore Cold Brook Reserve in Tewksbury

Township and look for fall birds! Cold Brook is one of

the best spots in Hunterdon County for sparrows and other

fall migrants. We will take a walk through the rolling

fields and hedgerow habitats, and check out the small

pond on the property. Meet Park Naturalist Laura Bush at

Cold Brook, 65 Old Turnpike Road, Oldwick. For birders

of any ability level; binoculars will be available.

FULL MOON HIKE

Saturday, November 4, 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM, Deer Path

Park, ages 8 through adult, $3 per person

of a full moon, we will listen to lingering insects and learn

about the adaptations of nocturnal animals. We will also

learn about the phases of the moon. Meet Park Naturalist

and dress to be outside for the hour.

and build a debris hut out of sticks and leaves. We will

also talk a little about the type of shelters animals use.

Dress to be outside for the whole program.

MAPLE TREE TAPPING

Saturday, January 27, 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM,

Echo Hill, ages 5 through adult, $3

Have you come to our Maple Sugaring

program in March and wondered how

exactly we tap the trees, or where the Echo

Hill sugar bush is? Well, here’s your

chance to find out! We will meet at the

playground and walk to the sugar bush (about five to ten

minutes). Then, Park Naturalist Laura Kroon Bush will

demonstrate how to tap a maple tree and participants will

collectively tap about 30 trees!

MAPLE SAP COLLECTION

Saturday, February 10, 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, Echo Hill,

ages 5 through adult, $3 per person

process! Many methods are used on commercial farms,

but the basic idea is the same—moving the sap from the

maple trees to the stove. Come participate in the process

at Echo Hill! We will meet at the playground and then

walk to the sugar bush (five to ten minutes). This

program will also be available to groups during weekdays

in February—please call us to schedule a group.

GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT

Jointly sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and

the National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird

Count (GBBC) is an annual event that engages bird

watchers to create a real-time snapshot of where birds are

across the continent. Join Park Naturalist Laura Bush to

view a short PowerPoint on the GBBC, and go over some

bird identification tips. Then we will take a bird walk

around the property to see what species are out there and

how many of each. This data will be submitted to the

GBBC to aid in citizen science research. For bird

watchers of any ability.

FALL & WINTER NATURE CLUBS TOT WALKS

NATURE CLUBS FOR KIDS AGES 3 – 5 Our popular nature clubs will introduce your child to

many exciting nature topics. Park Naturalist Laura Bush

will guide the children during hikes as they discover the

diverse field, forest, and pond habitats at Echo Hill.

Other hands-on activities include science experiments,

field games, and take-home craft projects. The children

will be able to observe the subtle changes from week to

week as we progress through the season. Through our

explorations, children will also hone their attention to

detail as we observe the colors, shapes, textures, and

sounds of the natural world.

This is a drop-off program and children must be self-

sufficient in the bathroom.

Please be sure to dress your child for the outdoors so that

the whole group will be able to enjoy our lessons fully.

We strongly recommend old clothes and sneakers/boots

that can get dirty. Nature Clubs meet rain or shine. In

inclement weather, we shorten our outdoor adventures to

spend more time indoors.

must be completed and signed by a

parent or guardian. Included on the

form are the date of last tetanus shot,

known allergies, and special care

children to ensure a quality experience

for the participants. The Division of

LIBERTY STATE PARK & THE MEADOWLANDS

marshes of Northeastern NJ. Our first stop will be at

Liberty State Park as we search the edges of the bay and

Park and the Meadowlands. We will take a walk around

its boardwalks looking for additional species to add to our

sightings for the day.

BARNEGAT LIGHT

Barnegat Light State Park is a great winter birding spot,

with lots of sea ducks, gulls, and winter shorebirds. Dress

warmly; a rigorous two miles of walking on beach and

species in the surrounding salt marshes before heading

back.

EAGLE WATCH

Saturday, January 20, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, $25

The Bald Eagle may be off the federal endangered species

list, but it is still a grand bird to see! This trip will go

where the eagles are, most likely along the Upper

Delaware in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and/or New York

State. Winter finches, waterfowl, Golden Eagle, and other

species might also be seen. About two miles of walking,

dress in layers for extreme cold.

CHASE FOR WINTER SURPRISES

Sunday, February 11, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, $25

This time of year some surprising birds can be reported in

our region. For example, last year there were reports of

Pink-footed Goose, Bohemian Waxwings, Rough-legged

Hawks, and some other species in the state. Based on

birding reports as the date for the trip gets close, Tom will

pick a target or two and we will go birding in that

direction.

The following bird trips are run by Tom Sheppard,

Chief Park Naturalist. Tom and his colleagues focus on

helping all participants learn about the birds and teach

them about interesting characteristics of each species.

They will also point out other natural history information

about the different areas the group is visiting. Please

pack a lunch, as stops are not guaranteed. If you have

your own binoculars or spotting scope, please feel free to

bring them. Binoculars are available for loan. Trips are

designed for adults, but mature youths under 18 can

contact Tom for approval. Please dress appropriately for

the weather. Transportation is by County Park vans.

Meet at the County Arboretum. Trips are recommended

for any interested birder at all levels of ability, unless

otherwise stated. Pre-registration is required.

MERCER COUNTY EXPLORATION

Saturday, September 16, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, $25

Mercer County for some fall birding. Areas that we will

focus on include Baldpate Mountain, St. Michael’s

Orphanage, and perhaps the Trenton Marsh. Our length

of stay will be based on our sightings. Around 2 miles of

walking will occur. If we have time, we will stop at

other locations.

BRIGANTINE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Saturday, October 21, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, $25

Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge is famous

throughout the US as one of the two best birding spots in

New Jersey. “Brig” embraces more than 20,000 acres of

coastal salt marsh, islands, open bays and channels.

Fresh-brackish impoundments created by diking off the

salt marsh are the main attraction for birds. We will

spend the entire trip within the main area searching for

all the bird species we can find.

FALL BIRDING AT COLD BROOK

Saturday, October 14, 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Cold

Brook Reserve, 8 through adults, $5 per person

Township and look for fall birds! Cold Brook is one of

the best spots in Hunterdon County for sparrows and

other fall migrants. We will take a walk through the

rolling fields and hedgerow habitats, and check out the

small pond on the property. Meet Park Naturalist Laura

Bush at Cold Brook, 65 Old Turnpike Road, Oldwick.

For birders of any ability level; binoculars will be

and friendly group, make new friends, and get low-impact aerobic exercise all at the same time. It is a great way to

keep mentally and physically fit! The instructor, Ed Kerns, has taught hundreds of people to square dance in an

enjoyable, fun-filled setting. He begins with simpler “calls” and then progresses on to those of more complexity,

stressing repetition and review for ease of learning. After the 12-week mid-point, students will be able to dance at

special area dances, and after graduating, will be able to dance the mainstream program at the many area square

dances and join the Flutterwheels at bi-weekly Friday night dances at Echo Hill.
