When San Jose sludge lords Sleep broke up in 1998, it looked like their magnum opus - the sprawl-ing, hour-plus long, single track slice of epic stoner goodness that’s now known as Jerusalem or Dope-smoker - would never be heard. Fans realised stoner metal had lost one if its trailblazers and tried their best to move on. But 16 years later, the masters of doom live again. The fever dream journey that is Dopesmoker has been unleashed in its unedited, epic glory, and Sleep are back with their first piece of new music since 1998.

Now in 2014, Sleep looks like a super group. After their dissolution, vocalist and bassist Al Cisneros blazed trails with the rhythmic droning of OM. Matt Pike continued his devotional study of the riff as the spiritual successor to both Lemmy and Iommi through sludge metal power trio High on Fire.

WHAT'S ON 80s new wave powerhouse Simple

Minds are back with album number 16 and Jim Kerr and co have produced a col-lection that is a harkening back to the epic synths and booming drums that made them such a draw in the 1980s.

It seems the modus operandi here was to make gargantuan stadium friendly album and, if the firsts three songs - Blindfolded, Midnight Walking and Honest Town - are anything to go by, then it’s mission accomplished.

While there are some moments that are, almost cheesily, stuck in the past (Kill or Cure) on the whole, this is a very contem-porary sounding album, that while rooted in 80s histrionics, manages to sound decidedly fresh.

While never reaching ther same heights of Don’t You Forget About Me, Big Music certainly lives up to its name.

Essentially a hip-hop version of Rocky, 8 Mile is a highly watchable drama that is a loose retelling of the star, Eminem’s rise to the heady heights of the US rap game. Eminem stars as B-Rabbit - a down on his luck wannabe rapper whwo is tryring desper-ately to break free of his trailer park life in Detroit. The rapper gives a fantasticly credible perfor-mance, augmented well by Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon and Brittany Murphy.

Irish powerhouse Brendan Gleeson turns in a bravura performance (possibly a career-best) in this darkly-comic drama from director John Michael McDonagh.

Gleeson plays Father James, who is the local clergyman of a rural Irish parish. During confession one Sunday, an unseen lo-cal informs Father James of his plan of killing him as a way of gaining retrobution for abuse he suffered as a young boy at the hands of another Catholic priest.

Left with only seven days to make his peace, James visits those within his community while trying to track down his potential killer and try-ing to make sense of the whole mess.

One of the year’s best.

Hypnotic inspirationW ith his main outfit, the Central

Coast-born Jinja Safari, on a bit of an extended hiatus,

co-frontman Pepa Knight certainly isn’t resting on his laurels, with his wonder-ously expansive debut solo record Hypnotized Vol 1 set to drop at the end of the month.

Our appetites have already been whet with three singles - Rahh!, Clams and Coyote Chior - and if those deeply layered, uplifting epics are anything to go by, this album is set tor be one hell of a trip indeed.

Knight is gearing up for a national tour in support of Hypnotized and, as he told TE, the shows are shaping up to be as expan-sive as the album.

“It’s a very exciting time at the moment but it’s also quite hectic because there’s quite a lot going on,” he said.

“We’ve already done one show in Sydney, which went really well, but there are heaps of little things in there that you have to get right - like we have all of these 3D projections - you know, where you have to wear the red and blue glasses and stuff - it works really well but it is quite involved.”

will also be bringing a new instrument with him on this tour - the ‘nanatron’ and yes, it is a bunch of bananas wired yp to produce a MIDI signal which Knight is able to manipulate with his hands.

“Yeah it kind of works,” he laughed.“It worked okay in Sydney so hopefully I’ll

have it down pat by the end of the tour. You basically touch a banana and that creates a signal - I currently have my bananas sing-

ing like a choir - it’s pretty cool.”While Jinja Safari were known for their

heady afro-pop sound, Knight has taken the band’s world music explorations to another level with Hypnotized - basing the album on his travels throughout India.

“I basically recorded a bunch of samples in all the places I visited and in a lot of cases, worked up songs based around those samples.

“There is this Hindu festival called Diwali where they just have fireworks going off everywhere and I recorded samples of the fireworks and made a song from it - everything happened really naturally and organically with this record.

“It’s quite a personal album that’s kind of like a travel diary so I hope that people experience a similar sense of wonderment listening to it as I did while I was making it.”

In the swing of things

W hile legendary crooner Frank Sinatra may very well be the best interpreter of the great

American songbook that the world has ever seen, arguably the best interpreter of Sinatra’s formidable canon is Austral-ia’s own Tom Burlinson.

Burlinson will be in the region for two performances of his Simply Sinatra show, which he said was a stripped-back version of his wildly successful Now We’re Swinging and Frank - A Life in Song shows.

“We brought the Now We’re Swinging show, which aside from Frank also focussed on other artists like Nat KING Cole and Tony Bennett to the region awhile ago and audiences really seemed to connect with it,” he told TE.

a few stories will be thrown in as well.”Burlinson, who first made a name for

himself as the star of such iconic films as The Man From Snowy River and Phar Lap said that his affinity for Sinatra was first ignited as a toddler - with particular thanks to a Sinatra record, A Swingin’ Affair, that was in his parents’ record collection.

“I remember looking at that record and saying ‘let’s play the man in the hat’,” he said.

It wasn’t until years later, after singing a self-penned song The Man in The Hat on the Midday Show that his uncanny resemblance to Sinatra was noticed.

“After I did that song , my representa-tives in LA heard about a production based around Frank’s life that was produced by his youngest daughter Tina,” he said.

“So I sent a videotape of myself doing the song on the show to her and before I knew it, I got the gig of singing all of the songs in the early part of Frank’s life, so the first hour of that miniseries is all me singing - which isn’t band considering it was my first professional gig as a singer.”
