What does a day working atthe reef look like for you? Sailing and sharing our homewith small groups of 12 guestsmaximum based on the GreatBarrier Reef is alive withdiversity in what we see & whatclose encounters we enjoy withthe local marine life- HumpbackWhales through the migrationseason, turtles, dugong, mantaray, a few species of dolphinsand of course all the delightful &colourful reef fish, reef sharks, stingray, batfish and more, while we snorkel. What questions do peoplealways ask you about thereef? We are always asked about thecondition of the reef, ourconcerns, coral bleaching? Weare also asked about generalinformation, facts andinteresting experiences we haveenjoyed on the GBR, forexample snorkelling with a podof 70 dolphins on the GBRNorth East if Port Douglas andsnorkelling with a pod of MantaRay on Feather Reef offMourilyan Harbour.
In your opinion, what is thestate of the reef? There is areas of the GBRstruggling more than otherareas-especially areas thathave been affected by cyclones, the warmer water temps andhuman impact & 'crown ofthorns'.We are lucky we canexplore the GBR and we havesome amazing spots we visit offthe coast of Townsville & otherareas too.The GBR is like arainforest or bushland-someareas of a rainforest/bushland isin pristine condition and othersare struggling & not sobeautiful-The GBR also hasareas that are in great condition& other areas are not healthy. What is your favourite reefcritter? Nudi-branch, Humbugs, seahorse & Giant Clam.
What can people do to helppreserve and protect thereef? Stop over-fishing( catch fish toeat only), do not anchor on theGBR(anchor in sand and ReefAnchors should banned), whensnorkelling/diving be mindful ofnot hitting the reef with fins&tanks, look but do not touch, commercial vessels need moresnorkel guidance and floatingdevices for weak swimmers/beginner snorkellers especiallyon the larger volume vesselscarrying large numbers ofguests.
What is your favourite partabout working at the reef? Everyday is different. Workingso close with marine life &nature, there is no guarantee ofwhat is going to happen, whatwe are going to see and theoverall reef experience isdifferent for everyone and it isgreat when everyone gets thechance to share theirexperience once they are backon board Big Mama.
