    December 3rd 1989, at theend of the MaltaConference Sovietleader Gorbachev and

    US President George H.W. Bush declared a longlasting era of peace hadbegun. This was

    regarded as the end ofthe Cold War. Later onthe Soviet Uniondissolved itself andRussia broke up.
