SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE HUMANIST UNIVERSITIES The search for economic self–sufficiency in order to supply humanist education: proceeds derived from the mission, not profit. The meaning of the humanist university as an institution that seeks a person’s integral and intelectual training . Openness to the presence of what is finite and eternal in social and personal life (sheltered by the religious phenomenon when it comes to strengthen spirituality).

IMPULSE TO HUMANISM PROGRAM.

The word HUMANIST may be applied to public and private universities, institutes, research centers, and religious universities, as long as they express the before-mentioned characteristics. In fact, the word humanist may even be overrated to a religious school, as well as to universities dedicated to humanism. That is, humanism does not depend on experts or investigators, but in the virtue of helping the human being educate himself.

IMPULSE TO HUMANISM PROGRAM.

To all universities, economic self-sufficiency is essential; this applies to humanist universities as well. The managers must risk all their talent, managing capability and practical sense to provide all this to the academic faculty. Commercialization, based on the constant search for profit without a counterweight that avoids monopolic positions, is unreconcilable with ethics and the social function of an authentic humanist university.

Education itself does not accept the phrase: “give customers what they ask for”. That is, education does not last like merchandise, or an object of consumption. On the other hand, instruction and training, which non-humanist universities deal with, are important goods and services in the market.

I like being man, being people, because I know that my course

in the world is not predetermined.

That my “destiny” is not a piece of information but

something that needs to be done and whose responsibility I cannot

escape from. I like being people,

because the story I knit with others, and whose making I

participate in, is a time of possibilities,

not of determinism.
