A. The approved electives for a program are the courses that will best equip a student to meet career goals and expectations intended for the program. Each program is planned on the premise that students choosing the program will choose electives approved for that program. Elective choices other than approved electives will be considered on an exception basis.

B. The prerequisites or co-requisites listed were recently revised and are believed necessary for the successful

completion of the course. However, students not meeting prerequisites or co-requisites may be admitted to a course at the discretion of the Program Chair. Students must seek prior approval in these cases.

C. Core courses are compulsory for the program chosen.

5. ALPHA AND GRADING SYSTEMS JR Shaw School of Business has adapted to the Alpha and Grade Point System. Please use the chart below as a guideline

for grade interpretation.

Percentage Letter Grade Point

85-100 A 4.0

80-84 A - 3.7

77-79 B + 3.3

73-76 B 3.0

70-72 B - 2.7

67-69 C + 2.3

63-66 C 2.0

60-62 C - 1.7

55-59 D + 1.3

50-54 D 1.0

0-49 F 0.0

6. HOW TO CALCULATE OVERALL WEIGHTED GRADE POINT AVERAGE Multiply the attempted hours times the grade point for each course in the term, and then divide by the total attempted

hours. Please note: Courses with the HPF (Honours/Pass/Fail) grading basis are not included. Any courses with a mark of “W”, “WF”, and “AU” are also not included. See the example below for clarification:

Course Attempted

Hours Earned Credits

Alpha Grade

% Mark Grade Point (does not appear on transcript - see above alpha grading system)

ACCT220 64 0.0 F 40 F 0

BUS322 64 3.0 A 88 4.0

FNCE234S 16 0.0 P n/a 0 *

FNCE280 64 3.0 B - 71 2.7

FNCE282 64 3.0 D+ 57 1.3

FNCE252 64 3.0 C 64 2.0

* Grading basis for this course is HPF, therefore not included in calculation.

The above is an example of a Year 2 Finance student’s transcript – Fall 2006 (2006/2007 academic year).

Page 6: HUMAN RESOURCES - IIS Windows · PDF fileJR Shaw School of Business – Year 2 Program Information - 2 - Nov/2009 TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Program Information Session

JR Shaw School of Business – Year 2 Program Information - 6 - Nov/09

Step 1: Take the hours for each course and multiply that by the Grade Point of each course.

ACCT220: 64 X 0 = 0

BUS322: 64 X 4.0 = 256

FNCE234S 16 X 0 = 0 - Omit for Step 2

FNCE280 64 X 2.7 = 172.8

FNCE282 64 X 1.3 = 83.2

FNCE252 64 X 2.0 = 128

Total: 0 + 256 + 0 + 172.8 + 83.2 + 128 = 640 Step 2: Next, add up total attempted hours taken for the term 64 + 64 + 64 + 64 + 64 = 320 Step 3: Next, use the total obtained in Step 1 and divide by the attempted hours in Step 2. GPA = 640 ÷ 320 = 2.0 (always round to one decimal place) The weighted grade point average for the term is 2.0 When calculating the average for each academic year, you need to apply the methods mentioned above for all courses of all semesters for that year rather than one semester at a time. Marks are cumulative.
