Grade for CHEM 1035: ________ CHEM 1036: _________ (Minimum grade of C or better required for both semesters of Chemistry) I acknowledge that many courses in this major require prerequisite* courses be completed and many upper division courses are only offered during certain semesters. I acknowledge that changing (or adding)an option within HNFE may impact my graduation date and graduating in the standard four year s may not be feasible. *Initial______ I am also aware of the Satisfactory Progress Towards the Degree as stated on the HNFE checksheets. I acknowledge that to remain within the HNFE department I must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 for the Science option and Exercise and Health Promotion Option, s or an overall GPA of 3.0 for the Dietetics option, double options, and double majors. I am aware that curriculum requirements and Satisfactory Progress requirements are based on graduation year and may differ from one graduation year to the next. *Initial________ * Prerequisites Policy: Prerequisites for courses are listed in the Undergraduate Course Catalog as well as the HNFE checksheets. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure the prerequisites for each course have been successfully completed. Students who enroll in a course for which they clearly have not satisfied the prerequisites or equivalent may be dropped from the course. Deliberately false statements testifying to the satisfaction of prerequisites constitute a violation of the honor code. The department and instructors have the right to remove a student from any HNFE course enrollment if prerequisites are not met. Additional note: Due to high enrollment in the HNFE major access to required courses is not guaranteed. *Initial _______ FERPA Disclosure: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requires that you authorize the university prior to release of any educational record information to a third party. Completion of the online form (available through Hokie Spa under the FERPA Disclosure tab) allows you to approve disclosure of your educational record information to parent(s) and/or guardian(s). The disclosure will remain valid until you remove the authorization via the add/delete button. It is important that you create an 8 character PASS CODE to be shared with your parent and/or guardian. The parent/guardian must disclose the pass code to the appropriate university official prior to receipt of any of your educational record information. *Initial _______ _______ I have attached the CALS Change of Option Form. http://www.cals.vt.edu/students/current/StudentForms.php

Creating an HNFE Plan of Study

1. Get a checksheet for the option and year of your expected graduation. Checksheets are located at www.hnfe.vt.edu Undergraduate Academics→ Options. Approved checksheets are located at www.registrar.vt.edu – Graduation Requirements (Checksheets). Select the option you plan to pursue. Checksheets are listed by graduation year.

2. Open your Unofficial Transcript on Hokie Spa. On the checksheet place a check by each course you have completed. You may want to indicate which courses you are currently enrolled in by using “IP” which stands for In Progress.

3. Start at the top of the checksheet and go course by course for the remaining courses that are left. Ask yourself the following questions:

a. Are there any prerequisites for this course? If so, have I planned to complete the prerequisites before this course? b. Is this course only offered certain semesters? (Fall, Spring?) This information can be found on the Checksheet.

4. In most cases, Areas 2, 3, 6 and 7 can be put in any semester. At this point you do not need to identify which course you will be

taking to fulfill these Areas. Students should follow the Curriculum for Liberal Education guide dated for the year in which they entered Virginia Tech. For listing of Curriculum for Liberal Education courses go to: http://www.cle.prov.vt.edu/guides/index.html.

5. Make sure you have met all the prerequisites for HNFE 3025 (there are several). Make sure you have not scheduled HNFE 3025

and HNFE 4004 in the same semester; 3025 is the prerequisite to 4004.

6. Make sure you have accounted for your Free Electives in order to meet the 120 credit requirement for graduation.

7. Look for lower credit hour semesters to fill in extra experiences or courses which can make you competitive or stand out. Add these to your plan.

When you become a Junior (60 credits) apply for Graduation and Request a Degree Audit Report (DARs) on Hokie Spa. Comment about Grades: All required courses must be taken A‐F unless they are only offered Pass/Fail. All required courses must be passed. Students who are in the Dietetics option, have double options, or are double majors must have an overall GPA of 3.0; Science, and EHP options must have an overall GPA of 2.5. All HNFE students must have a minimum in‐major GPA of 2.5. In‐major courses are indicated on the Checksheets. All HNFE students are required to earn a C or better in HNFE 1004, CHEM 1035, CHEM 1036, and CHEM 2535 or CHEM 2514. Retaking a course: If a student earns a grade of C‐ or less in a course and retakes that course (at Virginia Tech) the second grade counts towards the GPA. However, the first grade also counts towards the GPA. The credits only count once, so in effect the two grades are averaged. Both grades are also displayed on the transcript, i.e. A grade of D (1.0) and a grade of B (3.0) averages to a C (2.0).

For information on many Academic Policies go to the Undergraduate Course Catalog: http://www.undergradcatalog.registrar.vt.edu/.
