The programme structureThe academic year at the University of Hull begins with an MScinduction programme in September. The first teaching semester runsuntil January, and the second from January to the beginning of June.

For most of our programmes, you will complete four taught modulesworth 20 credits each and four worth 10 credits each. (Four modulesare studied and completed in each of the two teaching semesters.) Forfurther information, please see the course pages.

June to September is spent working independently, with academicsupervision, on the MSc dissertation or project. The 180 creditsneeded for a Masters degree are therefore made up of 120 credits oftaught modules and a 60-credit dissertation or project.

Connected learningIn addition to core modules related to your area of study, buildinghigh-level knowledge specific to your subject area, all MScprogrammes include two common modules to help developtransferable academic and professional skills.

Professional Skills and Ethicswill give you the tools that you need toachieve your academic and professional objectives, includingpersonal development planning techniques, communication andpresentation skills, and effective approaches to problem solving, allset in the crucial context of ethics and CSR.

Research Methods enables the exploration of research paradigms inthe context of business and management, providing you with toolsand techniques that you will need for the dissertation or project. Youwill also consider the practical problems and ethical issues that youmay confront in organisational settings.

Some programmes also offer optional modules.

Dissertation or projectAll students also undertake a dissertation or project supported by anacademic supervisor. This provides the opportunity for you to pursueyour interests and strengthen your analytical and critical skills as youengage with a major piece of work. The dissertation normally requiresprimary research and will demonstrate your understanding ofappropriate theories and research methodologies as well as criticalawareness of issues in the area of your topic.

Your dissertation can be in the form of a company-based project,involving the exploration of a specific organisational issue related toyour programme of study. You will put your learning into practice in areal organisation and feed your findings and recommendations backto the company. Previous projects have been in the areas of businessdevelopment, consumer marketing strategy, finance and analysis,organisational intelligence, pricing strategies and CSR.

This project allows you to network with potential employers and todemonstrate that you can make a tangible difference to the success ofan organisation – further boosting your employability.

SupportYou will be part of a vibrant learning community at Hull UniversityBusiness School. Each MSc begins with an induction programme atthe start of the first semester, during which you will have the chanceto get to know the teaching team and your fellow participants.

You will be encouraged to engage and interact with the programmematerial and develop new ways of working, as you take part in groupdiscussions, problem-solving exercises and presentations.

To support you through your course and prepare you for assignmentsand examinations, we provide extensive learning materials, anexcellent library, broadband-enabled PCs and e-journals.

All MSc students are also assigned a personal supervisor who is asource of pastoral care, information and links with other supportservices in the University.

Studying at the Business SchoolThe school provides a stimulating environment in whichfundamental issues in international business and management arestudied and developed, often in such a way as to influence practice.

The school is housed in four inspiring listed buildings which havebeen sympathetically renovated to accommodate the seamlessintegration of first-class modern facilities, including dedicatedcomputer suites, a 500-seat lecture theatre and a fair-trade cafe. Managing Finance deals with crucialfinancial and management accountingtechniques and alternative sources of short-and long-term finance. As a result, you willbe able to use and evaluate informationwhich will keep your organisation informedand ahead of the competition.

International Business Environment andStrategy encompasses complex andunpredictable factors, including trade,cultural and legislative barriers. You willanalyse the process of globalisation andidentify the best market approaches tosecure competitive advantage.

Analytic capabilities are highly valued andvery much in demand in today’s dynamicand complex business environment. Manyorganisations now have in-house analyticsteams, and the global consulting industry isworth an estimated $345 billion per year(Plunkett Research Ltd, 2010).

Business Analytics builds on the AnalyticConsulting module. Students furtherdevelop their capabilities in bothspreadsheet modelling and quantitativemethods. The module also examinescontemporary tools from the world ofbusiness analytics.

Problem Structuring and Decision Supportin Practice introduces the theory andpractice of decision support in organisationsand consulting interventions. You willexplore real-world case applications using avariety of contemporary tools and methods.

Business Project Management emphasisesthe application of project managementconcepts and techniques. It covers thenature of project management, activityscheduling and resource allocation, timeand cost control, teamwork and leadership.

Critical Systems Thinking further developsthe theory and practice of systems thinking.A platform capability is established inselected systems methodologies.

Strategic Management of Technology andInnovation explores how organisations haveto enhance their capacity for technologydevelopment and innovation. It answers thequestion of what concepts, tools andprocesses enable successful technologicalinnovations which provide both customerand organisational value.

Logistics Technology evaluatescontemporary technologies such as RFID(radio frequency identification) and AIDC(automatic identification and data capture)in the context of logistics applications andresponsiveness. The module provides insightinto the wider business implications of ITand other emerging technologies.

Information Systems in Business providesthe communication and analytic power thatfirms need to conduct trade and managetheir businesses on a global scale. Thismodule gives you a broad introduction to thetheory and the reality of choosing andmanaging the introduction of technologyand ERP systems necessary for business.

Human resource managers across allorganisations and sectors are faced withincreasingly complex demands arisingfromwithin their organisations and fromunpredictable external environments.

This is why our programme will provide youwith specialist skills and knowledge inhuman resource management (HRM) as wellas an understanding of wider issues, such asinternationalisation.

Factors including the loosening ofrestrictions on the movement of labour meanthat many employees now work acrossnational borders. Such circumstancesdemand the capacity from human resourcemanagers to design and implement strategicpolicies and processes – a skill that you willgain on this programme.

Critical Concepts in HRM explores thedevelopment and theory of human resourcemanagement, evaluating practices includinghuman resource planning; recruitment andselection; performance management; anddiversity.

Employment Relations are a crucialelement of HRM. This module explorestheories of employment relations,considering these in relation to strategichuman resource management and adoptinga comparative international approach.

International Issues in HRM examinesinternational human resource management,looking particularly at the transference of itsfunctions and practices across cultural andnational boundaries.

Human Resource Development focuses ontheories and practices of learning inorganisations, exploring employeedevelopment and management learning ofindividuals and the organisation. It alsocovers some psychological approaches tolearning, drawing on occupationalpsychology; experiential learning; skills;and social learning theory.

Strategic Leadership and Leading Changelooks at the relationship between leadershipskills and the development and evolution oforganisations. It considers the nature ofleadership, focusing on strategic leadership,and how organisations manage the changeprocess in response to internal and externalpressures.

The International Firm and Its Strategyexplores how firms large and small respondto the challenges posed by increasinginternationalisation and examines themethod and direction of internationalstrategies, from offensive and defensivepositions.

Global Logistics and Supply ChainManagement investigates the internationaldimensions of transport, procurement anddistribution as well as legal, financial andsecurity aspects. Successful applicants to the PhD are firstregistered on an MPhil and are then expected to upgrade fromMPhil to PhD through an Upgrade Seminar (comprising a 10,000-word research report and presentation) at the end of their first year.Exceptionally, students may continue on the MPhil, which is, intotal, a two-year full-time programme (three years part-time).

Master of Research (MRes)This is a one-year taught foundation programme that provides anideal preparation for students wishing to study for a PhD but whosefirst degree or Masters degree did not contain a sufficient research-training element. The programme of study includes modules onresearch philosophy, quantitative and qualitative researchtechniques, generic research skills, interview skills, surveymethodologies and appropriate subject-related options. Successfulcompletion allows progression to the MPhil and PhD programme.
